Role of auditory temporal processing for reading and spelling disability.

The role of auditory temporal processing in reading and spelling was investigated in a sample of 30 children and one of 31 adults, using a gap-detection task with nonspeech stimuli. There was no evidence for a relationship between reading and spelling disability (dyslexia) and the gap-detection threshold. The results were discussed regarding the relevance for the popular hypothesis of an auditory temporal processing deficit underlying dyslexia.

Object segregation in 8-month-old infants.

Two experiments examined 8-month-old infants' use of configural and physical knowledge in segregating three-dimensional adjacent displays. The infants in Experiment I saw two identical yellow octagons standing side by side: in the test events, a hand grasped the right octagon and pulled it to the side. The infants looked reliably longer when the octagons moved apart than when they moved together, suggesting that the infants (a) perceived the octagons as a single unit and hence (b) expected them to move together and were surprised when they did not. The infants in Experiment 2 saw a yellow cyli

Agnosia for object orientation: implications for theories of object recognition.

Instances in which objects are copied accurately, but are dramatically rotated relative to the original, have been interpreted as evidence for viewpoint-independent accounts of the object recognition process. In two case reports, we demonstrate that patients who show rotation in copying also show difficulties in informing the examiner of the canonical orientation of known objects. In copying rotated versions of familiar objects, one subject showed a tendency to copy them in their canonical upright orientation, and both subjects copied non-representational line drawings with their principal axi

The interaction of clozapine with the meta-chlorophenylpiperazine (mCPP) discriminative stimulus.

The psychotropic effects of the 5-HT2C agonist mCPP in human subjects are blocked by the atypical antipsychotic clozapine, but not by typical antipsychotics. An understanding of the mechanistic basis for the interaction of clozapine and mCPP would provide further insight into the basis for its unique therapeutic effects in humans. Drug-induced stimulus control provides an animal model for the subjective effects of psychotropic agents in humans. In the present study, the interaction of the atypical antipsychotic clozapine and the typical antipsychotic fluphenazine with the mCPP-stimulus were de

Ettlinger revisited: the relation between agnosia and sensory impairment.

The concept of agnosia as a higher order functional impairment, which can occur in the absence of low level visual perceptual deficits, continues to provoke debate. This controversy is complicated by the fact that, on close examination, agnosic patients do tend to have some perceptual difficulties. Thus the issue centres around the question as to whether these deficits play a causal part in the aetiology of agnosia or whether they are functionally independent, with both impairments resulting from the substantial cerebral lesions involved in agnosia. In 1956, Ettlinger published a study in whic

Conflicting evidence regarding the efficacy of ondansetron in benzodiazepine withdrawal.

These experiments tested the efficacy of the 5-hydroxytryptamine3 antagonist ondansetron (OND) in reversing various aspects of benzodiazepine withdrawal in rats. Three tests were used in which the benzodiazepine antagonist flumazenil was administered to rats receiving chronic administration of chlordiazepoxide. In one test, the elevated plus-maze, flumazenil produced a reduction in time spent in the open arms of the maze; OND completely reversed this effect of flumazenil in a dose-related fashion. However, OND failed to block the effects of the anxiogenic drug pentylenetetrazole (PTZ) in the e

Discriminative stimulus properties of midazolam are shared by a GABA-receptor positive steroid.

3-Alpha-5-alpha-tetrahydrodeoxycorticosterone (alloTHDOC) is a 3-alpha ring A-reduced metabolite of deoxycorticosterone that has been shown to act via nongenomic mechanisms to modulate the GABAA receptor complex allosterically in vitro. Moreover, there are behavioral data consistent with the anxiolytic actions of GABA-receptor positive steroids. The drug discrimination paradigm was used in rats to demonstrate that effects of alloTHDOC are mediated by the GABAA receptor complex in the intact animal. In rats trained to discriminate 1.8 mg/kg of midazolam from saline, alloTHDOC substituted for th

Wavelength discrimination in blindsight.

In the circumscribed, long-standing, clinically absolute visual field defects of three patients with vascular lesions that involved the optic radiation and visual cortex, forced-choice discrimination between coloured stimuli was tested. Paired stimuli were matched for luminous efficiency on the basis of previous measurements of increment-threshold spectral sensitivity made in the same patients and at the same retinal positions. To different extents all patients could discriminate between narrowband wavelength stimuli. The results imply that despite the effects of retrograde degeneration on tha

Infants' coordination of auditory and visual depth information.

Using the preferential-looking procedure infants 5, 7, and 9 months of age were presented two videoimages side by side on separate monitors accompanied by a soundtrack that matched one of the images. Each infant was presented: (1) a stationary drum-beating toy paired with the same toy approaching and receding in depth, to assess infants' recognition both that changing sound amplitude is a property of an object that is moving in space and that constancy in amplitude is a property of a stationary object; (2) a drum-beating toy moving horizontally paired with one approaching and receding in depth

Attentional functioning and relational learning.

Stimulus properties such as similarity-dissimilarity and novelty-familiarity are inherently relational and are embedded in ubiquitous stimulus contexts. Children with mental retardation and young children without mental retardation are particularly prone to failure on relational tasks such as oddity and match-to-sample (Greenfield, 1985; Soraci et al., in press). Converging evidence from a number of studies suggest that a critical factor in the performance discrepancies between these and other children is a differential sensitivity to relational information. In these studies relational charact

A comparison of assessment techniques measuring the effects of methylphenidate, secobarbital, diazepam and diphenhydramine in abstinent alcoholics.

In two studies, we studied the comparative sensitivity of different subjective and objective measures to methylphenidate (10 and 20 mg) and secobarbital (100 mg) versus placebo, and diphenhydramine (50 mg) and diazepam (10 and 20 mg) versus placebo in abstinent alcoholics. Subjective measures used were the Visual Analog Mood Scale and the Profile of Mood States. Objective measures were the Stroop and two microcomputer-controlled tasks developed in our lab - a dual pursuit tracking/reaction time task (P-Trak) and a reaction time task with regular and irregular preparatory intervals (PI) of vary

Gamma-butyrolactone's discriminability and effect on low rates of lever pressing by rats: alone and in combination with D-amphetamine and naloxone.

Three studies examined gamma-butyrolactone (Gbl) for benzodiazepine-like effects on low rates of food reinforced lever pressing by rats. A fourth study established Gbl's discriminative properties. Additionally, d-amphetamine or naloxone was administered with Gbl to test hypotheses of Gbl's neurochemical mechanisms of action. In Experiment 1, Gbl caused a dose-related decrease in lever pressing during a fixed-interval reinforcement schedule. Contrary to previous reports, neither d-amphetamine nor naloxone reversed the depressive effects of a high dose of Gbl on behavior. In Experiment 2, Gbl in

Are the effects of benzodiazepines on discrimination and punishment dissociable?

Studies have shown that benzodiazepines (BZs) both disrupt discrimination and increase resistance to punishment. Using a delayed response task, we provide evidence that effects of BZs on discrimination cannot be fully explained by deficits in either short or long term memory, or by intolerance for delay of reward. A schedule with rewarded, nonrewarded (Time out: TO) and conflict components was used to investigate effects in rats of compounds active at the BZ receptor on successive discrimination and punished responding in parallel. The GABA transaminase inhibitor ethanolamine-O-sulphate exerte

Discriminative stimulus properties of chlordiazepoxide and zolpidem. Agonist and antagonist effects of CGS 9896 and ZK 91296.

In previous studies the effects of CGS 9896, a pyrazoloquinoline ligand at benzodiazepine receptors, in rats trained to discriminate benzodiazepines from vehicle, have been variable. The present experiment confirmed that this compound produced responding on the drug-lever in rats trained to discriminate 5 mg/kg of chlordiazepoxide from saline, and showed that CGS 9896 did not antagonise the effect of chlordiazepoxide in this test. In contrast, CGS 9896 antagonised the stimulus properties of zolpidem (2 mg/kg), a non-benzodiazepine hypnotic, which displaces benzodiazepines from their binding si

Auditory agnosia. Analysis of a case with bilateral subcortical lesions.

We report a case of typical auditory agnosia. It is unique in that the clinical picture began with generalized auditory agnosia for verbal and nonverbal sounds and changed, over a period of two months, to a restricted auditory agnosia, confined to the recognition of nonverbal sounds. The lesions, confirmed by CT scanning and MRI, were subcortical bilaterally, without evidence of cortical damage, and have not previously been described. The results of audiological studies on temporal discrimination were similar to those described for bilateral temporal lobe lesions. The relationships between cli

Somatostatin and (D-Trp8, D-Cys14)-somatostatin delay extinction and reverse electroconvulsive shock induced amnesia in rats.

In the present study the effects of somatostatin and its analogs on active avoidance behavior, electroconvulsive shock (ECS)-induced retrograde amnesia, and spatial-discrimination learning were compared in rats. (D-Trp8, D-Cys14)-somatostatin (as did the somatostatin molecule itself) delayed the extinction of active avoidance behavior, antagonized ECS-induced amnesia, and did not modify spatial-discrimination learning. Des-Asn5-(D-Trp8, D-Ser13) somatostatin and des-AA1,2,4,5,12,13,-(D-Trp8) somatostatin did not influence these behaviors. The data suggest that certain parts of the somatostatin

Visual overselectivity: a comparison of two instructional remediation procedures with autistic children.

The present study compared two classroom-relevant procedures for remediating visual overselectivity in autistic children. One approach was based on perceptual-motor theory in which possible relationships between functional object-use and overselectivity were studied. The second strategy, equivalence training, used a four-step stimulus shift procedure. A comparison group of autistic children was exposed to simple repeated practice trials with the test tasks. Results showed that equivalence training was more effective than functional object-use in improving posttest scores, with repeated practic

Left hemispheric functional compensation in prosopagnosia? A tachistoscopic study with unilaterally lesioned patients.

Clinical observations suggest left hemispheric compensation for prosopagnosia in patients with isolated right posterior lesions. To test this hypothesis we investigated six patients with right posterior lesions, three with and three without prosopagnosia, with a series of tachistoscopic matching experiments. Faces with and without paraphernalia, shapes, objects and words were presented at different exposure durations (unlimited, 1000, 200, 50 and 20 ms). Prosopagnosia patients performed better than non-prosopagnosia patients if pure faces (eyes, nose and mouth only) were presented for an unlim

Discriminative stimulus properties of the serotonin agonist 1-(3-trifluoromethylphenyl)piperazine (TFMPP).

Using a standard two-lever drug discrimination procedure, twelve rats were trained to discriminate 1.0 mg/kg of the serotonin (5-HT) agonist TFMPP from saline. Once trained, the animals displayed a dose-related decrease in discriminative performance upon administration of lower doses of TFMPP. Tests of stimulus generalization were performed using the purported 5-HT agonist RU-24, 969 and 1-(2,5-dimethoxy-4-methylphenyl)-2-aminopropane (DOM). While TFMPP produced stimulus effects similar to those of RU-24,969, these effects seem to be dissimilar to those of DOM. The results of the present study

Visual localization and discrimination in squirrel monkeys with bilateral lesions of the superior colliculus.

This study measured the effects of superior colliculus (SC) lesions on skill at localizing stationary or moving objects, and on ability to discriminate between objects which differed in pattern or brightness in squirrel monkeys. Bilateral electrolytic lesions of the SC were made in 8 monkeys (EXP group); the lesions in 5 (SC group) were restricted essentially to the SC (22-25% damaged), the other 3 had additional unilateral damage to the midbrain reticular formation (10 to 14% damage to SC). The control group (N = 15) consisted of 9 unoperated, 3 sham-operated, and 3 lesioned-control monkeys.
