Molecular evidence of goose-parvovirus-related abnormal molting in Pekin ducks.

Since January 2019, abnormal molting has been observed frequently in approximately 40-day-old Pekin ducks in China. To investigate the possible involvement of a virus, we tested the prevalence of duck circovirus (DuCV), goose hemorrhagic polyomavirus (GHPyV), and goose parvovirus (GPV) in 11 molt cases in two provinces. GPV was detected in all cases, particularly in all samples collected from the feather area. The complete genome sequences of three GPV strains were determined and found to have 52 nucleotide changes relative to GPVs associated with short beak and dwarfism syndrome of Pekin duck…

SDG721 and SDG705 are required for rice growth.

H3K4me3 plays important roles in development, transcription, and environmental responses. Here, we report that SDG721 (SET-domain group protein 721) and SDG705 are involved in regulating rice development. SDG721 and SDG705 encode TRITHORAX-like proteins, which appear to modulate H3K4 methylation levels. Loss of SDG721 and SDG705 function resulted in GA-deficient phenotypes, including semi-dwarfism, reduced cell length, and reduced panicle branching. The transcripts levels and H3K4me3 levels of GA biosynthesis genes and GA signaling pathway genes were downregulated in the sdg721 sdg705 plants. …

The femur length/head circumference relation in obstetric sonography.

The relationship of sonographic femur length to biparietal diameter (BPD) in utero may be useful in detecting short-limb dwarfism, hydrocephaly, microcephaly, and measurement errors. Because BPD can be adversely affected by head shape changes (e.g., dolichocephaly), falsely high or low values of femur length/BPD could result. Because head circumference is less affected by head shape changes than is BPD, it should be a better standard of head size against which to judge limb length. The authors report normal values for the relationship between femur length and head circumference, based on a cro…

Schwartz-Jampel syndrome: a case report. Stimulatory effect of calcium and A23187 calcium ionophore for protein synthesis in muscle cell cultures.

This report describes a 3-year-old male patient with dwarfism, generalized muscular hypertrophy, stiffness, myotonia, multiple skeletal deformities and normal intelligence. Serum creatine kinase was twice elevated. EMG showed 'dive bomber' discharges and muscle biopsy revealed mild to moderate myopathic changes with variability in fiber size and 'moth-eaten' fibers. Multiple muscle cell cultures showed significantly lower values of total protein synthesis as determined by (3H)-leucine incorporation. The addition of calcium and/or A23187 calcium ionophore to cultures significantly stimulated to…

Recurrent RTTN mutation leading to severe microcephaly, polymicrogyria and growth restriction.

Autosomal recessive missense Rotatin (RTTN) mutations are responsible for syndromic forms of malformation of cortical development, ranging from isolated polymicrogyria to microcephaly associated with primordial dwarfism and other major malformations. We identified, by trio based whole exome sequencing, a homozygous missense mutation in the RTTN gene (c.2953A > G; p.(Arg985Gly)) in one Moroccan patient from a consanguineous family. The patient showed early onset primary microcephaly, detected in the fetal period, postnatal growth restriction, encephalopathy with hyperkinetic movement disorders …

Delayed growth in two German shepherd dog littermates with normal serum concentrations of growth hormone, thyroxine, and cortisol.

Four German Shepherd Dogs from a litter of 10 were evaluated because of postnatal onset of proportionate growth stunting that clinically resembled well-documented hypopituitary dwarfism in that breed. Although 2 pups had histologic evidence of hypopituitarism, the remaining 2 pups had normal serum growth hormone concentration and adrenocorticotropin secretory capability, and normal adrenal function test and thyroid function study results. Furthermore, the initially stunted German Shepherd Dogs grew at a steady rate until at 1 year, body weight and shoulder height approximated normal measuremen…

Abnormality of cartilage collagen in a patient with unclassified chondrodystrophy.

We have described a previously unrecognized chondrodystrophy characterized by short-limbed dwarfism, blue sclera, severe cardiopulmonary problems, and failure of postnatal growth. The first of two siblings thus affected died at age 6 months following attempted correction of an atrial septal defect. Growth plate cartilage from multiple sites obtained at autopsy showed a marked abnormality of architecture on the light microscopic level. Biochemical studies demonstrated an absence of normal alpha 1(II) collagen in costochondral junction growth plate cartilage and an appearance of the major collag…

Central serous choroidopathy in the Hallermann-Streiff Syndrome.

Central serous choroidopathy was observed in a young patient with the Hallermann-Streiff syndrome. Typical features of this syndrome include microphthalmos, proportionate dwarfism, dyscephaly with birdlike facies, dental abnormalities, and hypotrichosis. Exceptional aspects of this case include age of onset (11 years), high hyperopic refractive error (+ 13.00 sphere), and multiple recurrences caused by six separate documented leaks from the choroid. Fundus changes previously reported in the Hallermann-Streiff syndrome, interpreted as chorioretinal pigmentary changes, may have been secondary to…

Incidence of growth lines in psychosocial dwarfs and idiopathic hypopituitarism.

The presence of growth lines in the distal radius was evaluated prior to treatment in 23 psychosocial dwarfs and 25 patients with idiopathic hypopituitarism. The lines were very common in the psychosocial dwarfs and rare in the pituitary dwarfs (P = .0005). This finding can be explained by the fluctuating adverse environment to which the psychosocial dwarf is exposed and the constant lack of growth in hypopituitary patients. Therefore, in the absence of systemic disease, when growth lines are present in a patient with short stature or failure to thrive, a thorough review of the patient's psych

Differences in growth in prepubertal children with definite growth hormone deficiency, short stature unresponsive to stimulation tests, and idiopathic short stature treated with recombinant human growth hormone: a retrospective study.

INTRODUCTION: Growth hormone stimulation tests are crucial in diagnosing growth hormone deficiency (GHD) in children; however, their limited reliability and inconsistent thresholds pose diagnostic challenges. A proposed subclassification distinguishes definite GHD (dGHD), short stature unresponsive to stimulation (SUS), and idiopathic short stature (ISS). This study aims to assess whether these categories are distinguishable at baseline and differ in response to recombinant human growth hormone (rhGH) therapy, particularly in terms of near adult height (NAH) outcomes. METHODS: This retrospect

Concomitant achondroplasia and developmental dysplasia of the hip.

Achondroplasia (ACH) is the most common form of hereditary dwarfism and presents with multiple musculoskeletal anomalies but is not normally associated with premature hip arthritis. Developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) is a spectrum of disease resulting in shallow acetabular depth and a propensity for chronic femoral subluxation or dislocation; it is among the most common causes of premature arthritis. This case report describes the diagnosis of symptomatic DDH in a patient with ACH and highlights difficulties of primary total hip arthroplasty (THA) as a treatment option. Intraoperative ra…

Orofacial manifestations of achondroplasia.

Achondroplasia (Online Mendelian Inheritance in Man [OMIM] 100800), is considered as a form of skeletal dysplasia dwarfism that manifests with stunted stature and disproportionate limb shortening. Achondroplasia is of special interest in the field of dentistry because of its characteristic craniofacial features which include relative macrocephaly, depressed nasal bridge and maxillary hypoplasia. Presence of large head, implanted shunt, airway obstruction and difficulty in head control requires special precautions during dental management. The current case report highlights the orofacial manife…

Consequences of not treating children with laron syndrome (primary growth hormone insensitivity).

The follow-up of a large cohort of patients with Laron syndrome (LS) from infancy to adult age has enabled us to determine the effects of long-term insulin-like growth factor-I (IGF-I) deficiency on auxological, biochemical, physiological and psychological parameters. We found that early and continuous IGF-I deficiency (the anabolic effector of growth hormone) causes dwarfism, acromicria, organomicria, marked obesity, insulin resistance, retardation of skeletal maturation and osteoporosis, as well as muscular and central nervous tissue underdevelopment, and a series of biochemical changes incl…

A gene for achondroplasia-hypochondroplasia maps to chromosome 4p.

Achondroplasia (ACH) is a frequent condition of unknown origin characterized by short-limbed dwarfism and macrocephaly. Milder forms, termed hypochondroplasias (HCH) result in short stature with radiological features similar to those observed in ACH. We report on the mapping of a gene causing ACH/HCH to human chromosome 4p16.3, by linkage to the iduronidase A (IDUA) locus, in 15 informative families (Z max = 3.01 at theta = 0 for ACH; Z max = 4.71 at theta = 0 for ACH/HCH). Multipoint linkage analysis provides evidence for mapping the disease locus telomeric to D4S412 (location score in log 10…

Nephronophthisis. Report of 8 cases from Britain.

Eight Scottish children with nephronophthisis are described. The typical clinical picture is thirst and polyuria associated with severe anaemia, progressive impairment of renal function, and dwarfism. Isosthenuria and gross enlargement of the bladder are usually present. Systemic hypertension is usually absent until the terminal stages. Five of these children are dead and the kidneys have been examined at necropsy. Percutaneous renal biopsy has been carried out on the remainder. The typical morbid anatomical feature is the presence of medullary cysts in small uniformly contracted kidneys. Hist…

A comparative study of phyllostachys edulis and its dwarf variant phyllostachys edulis 'Tubaeformis' at the anatomical, transcriptomic, and DNA methylation levels.

Internode length is an important trait of bamboo and a key indicator affecting the processing and utilization of bamboo materials. Shengyin bamboo is a dwarf variant of Phyllostachys edulis (Moso bamboo) with abnormally shortened internodes, yet its dwarfing mechanism has not been clarified. In this study, we adopted the method of Whole-Genome Bisulfite Sequencing (WGBS) for DNA methylation combined with RNA Sequencing (RNA-seq) to explore the key causes of dwarfism in Shengyin bamboo. Observations via paraffin sections and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) indicate that abnormal cell divisio…
