Supporting a Student With School Absenteeism Through to Employment: A Case Report of Long-Term Home-Based Occupational Therapy for Emotion-Related School Attendance Challenges.

In Japan, rising school absenteeism underscores the need for effective support systems. Students with neurodevelopmental disorders, such as autism spectrum disorder and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, are highly vulnerable to prolonged absenteeism due to difficulties in interpersonal relationships and adaptation to their environment. However, existing literature primarily focuses on adaptation up to school reintegration or progression to higher education, with few studies examining the long-term transition from high school graduation to employment. This report describes the case of a

Can all roads lead to competency? School levels effects in Licensing examinations scores.

At the foundation of research concerned with professional training is the idea of an assumed causal chain between the policies and practices of education and the eventual behaviours of those that graduate these programs. In medicine, given the social accountability to ensure that teaching and learning gives way to a health human resource that is willing and able to provide the healthcare that patients and communities need, it is of critical importance to generate evidence regarding this causal relationship. One question that medical education scholars ask regularly is the degree to which the u

Expansive Intimacies: Celebrating the Intimacy of Asexual and Aromantic People.

This qualitative grounded theory study examined asexual graduate and undergraduate college students' experiences in and with healthy intimate relationships. Using interview and survey data from 69 participants, the study presents a new emergent conceptualization of expansive intimacies, inclusive of more than 10 types of intimacy. The expansive intimacies model moves beyond rigid, gendered, allonormative conceptions of intimacy by instead challenging narrow or limited ideas of who gets to experience intimacy and what people classify as intimacy. Viewing intimacy as the ways asexual and aromant

Experiences of homonegativity and sexual risk behaviour in a sample of Latino gay and bisexual men.

This study examines the relationship between homonegativity, racism and poverty and HIV-risk-related behaviour among an Internet-based sample of 226 Latino gay and bisexual men. Participants had a median level of education at graduate school level or higher and a median monthly income in the US$1600-2400 range. Income and education in this sample are higher than participants in most other studies of Latino gay and bisexual men, providing information about HIV risk in a previously understudied segment of the population. Three negative binomial regressions were used to predict unprotected recept

Low income and education are associated with greater ASCVD risk scores among adults in the US.

INTRODUCTION: Social determinants of health (SDOH) are fundamental causes of poor cardiovascular health, yet cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk assessment tools exclude SDOH. Our objective was to determine whether SDOH are independently associated with CVD risk in US adults. METHODS: Utilizing the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES), we combined years 1999-2018 and included participants aged 40-79 without history of CVD and with information to calculate CVD risk (n = 21,694). Ten-year risk of atherosclerotic CVD (ASCVD) was calculated using the American Heart Association/

BACKGROUND: Transfusion medicine is a complex important subspecialty of pathology. A transfusion carries measurable risks and benefits. Although fellowship training exists in transfusion medicine, the majority of transfusion decisions are made by clinicians without formal training. STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: A total of 116 recently graduated medical students entering 10 residency programs at a single medical center over 2 years were evaluated using a standardized patient encounter to determine baseline knowledge. Transfusion medicine knowledge was assessed during the encounter by obtaining ver

Impact of Asynchronous Training on Student's Confidence and Attitudes Regarding Patients With Opioid Use Disorders.

BACKGROUND: The American opioid use disorder (OUD) and overdose epidemic require physicians and advanced care providers to be prepared to care for patients with this life-threatening condition. Learning to identify, engage, and treat patients with OUD with medications is an essential skill for providers, as is developing requisite confidence and therapeutic attitudes regarding the care of patients with OUD (CP-OUD). To address the need for improved OUD treatment education, our team built and implemented a 12-module asynchronous course entitled, "Care of Patients with Opioid Use Disorder", in 3

Psychiatric Education for Pediatric Emergency Medicine Fellows: Should We be Doing More?

UNLABELLED: The number of psychiatric encounters is steadily increasing across all pediatric emergency departments. Based on this growing national crisis, we hypothesized there is a lack of robust education in behavioral/mental health emergencies during pediatric emergency medicine (PEM) fellowship. METHODS: This was a cross-sectional survey of PEM fellowship directors. The survey was submitted to the Pediatric Emergency Medicine Program Director Survey Committee via REDCap to all 83 fellowship directors. RESULTS: Fifty-five (66%) PEM fellowship directors completed the survey from September

High frequency of t(11;18) in gastric mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue lymphomas in Taiwan, including one patient with high-grade transformation.

INTRODUCTION: As with other allied health professions, recruitment and retention of dietitians to positions in rural and isolated positions is challenging. The aim of this study was to examine the early effects of the Northern Ontario Dietetic Internship Program (NODIP) on recruitment and retention of dietitians to rural and northern dietetics practice. The program is unique in being the only postgraduate dietetics internship program in Canada that actively selects candidates who have a desire to live and work in northern and rural areas. Objectives of the survey were to track the early career

Who, What and Where (WWW) Problems in Scientific Communities.

The results of the National Higher Education Entrance Examination (Gaokao, in Chinese) have a life-long effect on most Chinese by labeling them clever or not. Some of the following rules of the Gaokao enhance the damage, for example, the rule of Who, What and Where. In general, Who you are and What you have done are of secondary importance, but Where you graduated from, especially the college of first-record is the most important, but discriminatory criterion in the recruitment courses of most of scientific communities and social organizations in China.

Genetic counselor training: a review and considerations for the future.

The first training program for genetic counselors began in 1969. Since then a number of other programs have been developed and more than 650 individuals have graduated from these programs. This article reviews the development and current status of training opportunities for genetic counselors. Twelve programs that currently grant a master's-level degree in genetic counseling are reviewed. Other areas, such as certification and licensure, that reflect genetic counseling training or such issues of professional growth as continuing education and career advances are addressed.

Lessons learned from a novel calcium-channel protagonist and person.

A long time ago (circa 1976), David C. Triggle was Chair of the Department of Biochemical Pharmacology at S.U.N.Y. Buffalo where he led the faculty and staff in the education and mentoring of countless pharmacy and graduate students who passed through the hallowed halls of the University. Trained as a chemist, David spent his days synthesizing new and improved calcium channel blockers in a cramped, makeshift organic chemistry lab while a lab full of aspiring pharmacologists measured their effects on contractile responses of various smooth muscle preparations. I was a graduate student fortunate

The Implementation of X + Y Scheduling in Combined Internal Medicine-Pediatrics Residency Programs: Practical Considerations for Program Leadership.

The X + Y scheduling approach, or block scheduling, is common among internal medicine residency programs. With the beginning of a pilot program through the American College of Graduate Medical Education in 2018, pediatrics and internal medicine-pediatrics (Med-Peds) residency programs have been able to adopt X + Y scheduling as well. The X + Y scheduling approach presents unique challenges and opportunities for combined Med-Peds residencies. This paper describes an early experience with X + Y scheduling in Med-Peds residencies and describes practical considerations for Med-Peds programs consid
