The red-eared slider, Trachemys scripta elegans (Wied, 1938), has been introduced worldwide, partly because of the exotic pet trade in the 1980s and 1990s. When T. s. elegans is released or escapes into natural environments, it often establishes new feral populations due to its tolerance for a variety of aquatic ecosystems. Therefore, it is now considered one of the most invasive species in the world because it can compete with native turtle species. In the present study, our objectives were to identify the potential for polystome spillover and spillback resulting from the introduction of the

Sarcoptic mange, caused by the Sarcoptes scabiei mite, is a highly transmissible skin condition affecting many mammalian species worldwide. South American camelids (SAC) have the highest reported prevalence of mange in South America, causing economic losses and posing a conservation threat to wild SAC. This study investigated mite diversity in SAC in Argentina and assessed relationships between known outbreak areas. Distinct epidemiologic scenarios were explored: the San Juan-La Rioja region, where a mange outbreak decimated wild SAC populations, and the Puna region of Jujuy, where domestic an

Copper plays an essential role in organisms as a catalytic co-factor for key enzymes like cytochrome c oxidase. Copper importation, distribution and secretion is carried out by copper transport and copper-binding proteins known as copper chaperones. Cox17 is a chaperone that conveys copper to Cox11 and Sco1 for metalation of the CuB and CuA of Cox1 and Cox2 respectively in eukaryotes. Cox17 from Trypanosoma brucei brucei and T. congolense were recombinantly expressed and affinity purified as MBP-fusion proteins. BACKGROUND: Hyalomma spp. ticks play a crucial role as vectors for the Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever virus. Hyalomma spp. larvae and nymphs are transported via migratory birds to temperate regions of Europe from Africa, the Middle East, and Mediterranean areas. Recently, the emergence of adult ticks has been documented in numerous countries where they were previously not reported. This study aimed to monitor the potential occurrence of Hyalomma spp. ticks in Poland using a citizen science project.
METHODS: A dedicated website was created through which volunteers could submit photos of unusu

PURPOSE: Crenosoma vulpis (Dujardin,1845) is a lungworm which has spread worldwide in canines and is associated with upper respiratory infections. In a majority of cases, the infections are accompanied with chronic cough. Diagnosis of lungworms is often underdiagnosed and can be misinterpreted as other respiratory diseases.
METHODS: The Small Animal Clinic of the University Veterinary Hospital admitted an 11-month-old dog presented with persistent cough associated with difficulty in breathing and even asphyxia. Based on clinical symptoms, the patient underwent radiological and bronchoscopic e

Saccocoelioides is a genus within the family Haploporidae and is distributed throughout the Americas. The recent application of molecular techniques has facilitated the reorganization of this genus and the description of new species, resulting in a current total of 28 species. In Argentina, 11 species have been identified; however, the validity of Saccocoelioides bacilliformis and Saccocoelioides octavus remains controversial. Recently, specimens of digeneans were collected from two distinct geographical locations: the Paraná River basin (Misiones province) and the Río de la Plata basin (Bueno

Spirometra mansoni is a diphyllobothroid cestode and one of the causing agents of sparganosis, a zoonotic foodborne and waterborne infection in humans. This parasite has an indirect life cycle with domestic and wild canids or felids as definitive hosts. The last report of S. mansoni in Costa Rica was done in 2004 by morphological assessment of worms, whereas molecular evidence of this species was obtained recently in the Americas. Herein, we present seven cases of spirometrosis in four dogs, three cats and a coyote from different regions of Costa Rica occurring in a time span of a year. Dog ca

BACKGROUND: Culex tritaeniorhynchus, a major vector of Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV), is found across a broad geographical range, including Africa, Asia, Australia and Europe. Understanding the population structure and genetic diversity of pathogen vectors is increasingly seen as important for effective disease control. In China and Japan, two countries in close proximity to the Republic of Korea (ROK), Cx. tritaeniorhynchus has been categorized into two clades based on the DNA barcoding region of mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI), suggesting the presence of cryptic specie

BACKGROUND: Copper is an essential metal for living organisms as a catalytic co-factor for important enzymes, like cytochrome c oxidase the final enzyme in the electron transport chain. Plasmodium falciparum parasites in infected red blood cells are killed by excess copper and development in erythrocytes is inhibited by copper chelators. Cytochrome c oxidase in yeast obtains copper for the CuB site in the Cox1 subunit from Cox11.
METHODS: A 162 amino acid carboxy-terminal domain of the P. falciparum Cox11 ortholog (PfCox11Ct) was recombinantly expressed and the rMBPPfCox11Ct affinity purified

The relative toxicity of glyphosate (GLY) and its metabolite aminomethylphosphonic acid (AMPA) to zebrafish were compared. Embryos/larvae were exposed to one dose of either GLY (0.1, 1, or 10 μM), AMPA (0.1, 1, or 10 μM), or a 1 μM mixture for 7-days post-fertilization. Survival, success of hatch, and deformity frequency were not different from controls. Neither chemical induced reactive oxygen species in larval fish. GLY increased superoxide dismutase 2 mRNA in larvae while AMPA increased catalase and superoxide dismutase 1 in a concentration-specific manner. GLY increased cytochrome c oxidas

BACKGROUND: Anopheles subpictus and Anopheles sundaicus are closely related species, each comprising several sibling species. Ambiguities exist in the classification of these two nominal species and the specific status of members of these species complexes. Identifying fixed molecular forms and mapping their spatial distribution will help in resolving the taxonomic ambiguities and understanding their relative epidemiological significance.
METHODS: DNA sequencing of Internal Transcribed Spacer-2 (ITS2), 28S-rDNA (D1-to-D3 domains) and cytochrome oxidase-II (COII) of morphologically identified

Hydrogen sulfide and related/derived persulfides (RSnH, RSSnR, n > 1) have been the subject of recent research interest because of their reported physiological signaling roles. In spite of their described actions, the chemical/biochemical mechanisms of activity have not been established. From a chemical perspective, it is likely that metals and metalloproteins are possible biological targets for the actions of these species. Thus, the chemical biology of hydrogen sulfide and persulfides with metals and metalloproteins will be discussed as a prelude to future speculation regarding their physiol

Adrenal pheochromocytoma (PCC) is a very rare tumor that stems from chromaffin cells, which can develop into malignant tumor. During the operation, abundant blood vessels were often observed in PCC than other adrenal tumors, which increases the difficulty and risk of the surgery. Therefore, it is important to investigate the mechanism of PCC angiogenesis. Twelve surgical specimens of PCC from Ruijin Hospital, Shanghai Jiaotong University were grouped into high and low microvessel density (MVD) group. They were also divided into rich blood supply and nonenriched blood supply group, according to

The cestode Hymenolepis diminuta is highly prevalent in wild rat populations and has also been observed rarely in humans, generally causing no apparent harm. The organism has been studied for decades in the laboratory, and its colonization of laboratory rats has recently been shown as protective against some inflammation-associated disorders. Recently, H. diminuta has become a leading candidate for helminth therapy, an emerging method of "biota enrichment" used to treat or prevent inflammatory diseases of humans in Western society. While most of the experimental isolates of H. diminuta are ide

Coenurus cerebralis is the larval stage of Taenia multiceps, which infects the muscles and brain of goats and, to a lesser extent, sheep. The resulting cerebral and non-cerebral infections caused by the larval form (metacestode) of this cestode are commonly known as coenurosis. A weak emaciated carcass of five months old female goat, on necropsy, revealed numerous parasitic cysts (n = 56, grossly visible) in the visceral cavity including heart, diaphragm, thoracic cavity, abdominal cavity and pelvic inlet. A large number of variable sized parasitic cysts were also observed embedded in the peri

We report a novel mitochondrial m.4414T>C variant in the mt-tRNAMet (MT-TM) gene in an adult patient with chronic progressive external ophthalmoplegia and myopathy whose muscle biopsy revealed focal cytochrome c oxidase (COX)-deficient and ragged red fibres. The m.4414T>C variant occurs at a strongly evolutionary conserved sequence position, disturbing a canonical base pair and disrupting the secondary and tertiary structure of the mt-tRNAMet. Definitive evidence of pathogenicity is provided by clear segregation of m.4414T>C mutant levels with COX deficiency in single muscle fibres. Interestin

In the parthenogenetic monogeneans of the genus Gyrodactylus Nordmann, 1832, the genetic diversity within or between hosts is determined by the relative roles of lateral transmission and clonal propagation. Clonality and limited transmission lead to high-amplitude metapopulation dynamics and strong genetic drift. In Baltic populations of the three-spined stickleback Gasterosteus aculeatus Linnaeus, the local mitochondrial diversity of Gyrodactylus arcuatus Bychowsky, 1933 is very high, and spatial differentiation weak. To understand the transmission dynamics in a single location, the transmiss
