The significance of low density microfilaraemia in the transmission of lymphatic filarial parasites.

Low density microfilaraemia (mf) is a density of circulating mf which is often undetected by standard survey techniques; it occurs naturally, after anti-filarial drug administration and after vector control. Its occurrence in human populations is closely related to the observed mf frequency distributions in them, and it is an important cause of underestimation of mf prevalence rates in epidemiological surveys. In the present paper it is defined quantitatively as a count of less than 4 mf 20 microliters-1 of capillary blood or less than 30 mf ml-1 of venous blood. Detection of low intensity tra

Tissue tonometry: a useful tool for assessing filarial lymphedema.

A tissue tonometer was used to assess peripheral lymphedema in patients with filariasis in a Bancroftian endemic community. Matched populations of 34 patients with Grade II and 29 patients with Grade III unilateral lower limb edema and 26 healthy subjects were assessed for leg tissue compressibility and circumference. Tonometry was performed at three fixed points on the leg using three weight levels (70, 140, and 210 gms). The mean value of compressibility for each weight level and points measured in the edematous leg were significantly less compared with the contralateral non-edematous leg in

Isozymic pattern of lactate dehydrogenase in cases of bancroftian filariasis.

Isozymic patterns of lactate dehydrogenase (E.C. 1.1.1.27) by polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (PAGE) were observed in various categories of filariasis and controls, i.e. asymptomatic microfilaraemia and symptomatic amicrofilaraemia, endemic normal and non-endemic normal. Lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) activity was also observed amongst the above categories of patients. An increase in enzyme activity and change in the isozymic pattern was observed in the above categories of filaria infected serum. LDH activity doubled in asymptomatic microfilaraemia whereas in symptomatic amicrofilaraemia the i

Non-involvement of nulliparous females in the transmission of bancroftian filariasis.

The possible involvement of nulliparous females of Culex quinquefasciatus in the transmission of bancroftian filariasis under field conditions was examined in Pondicherry, South India. Biting nulliparous females that had previously ingested partial blood meals were found infected with microfilariae/L1 stage larvae. None of them harboured infective-stage larvae. These findings suggest that nulliparous females are not involved in the transmission of filariasis. Therefore, their inclusion for estimating the transmission parameters is questionable. However, nulliparous females should also be disse

[Advances in filariasis control and research in China during 1986-1990. National Technical Steering Group for Filariasis Control and Research, MOPH].

Based upon the statistical data during 1986-1990 from provincial, regional or municipal institutions involved in the control and research of filariasis, important achievement in filariasis control has been achieved since 1986. During the 5 years, 22,350,772 person were blood-examined, among them, 268,034 were found to be microfilaria positive; a total of 78,550,945 man/times of treatment with DEC were given (including administration of DEC-medicated salt). Till the end of 1990, filariasis has been basically eliminated in 823 counties/cities out of the 864 endemic counties/cities, and has been

Seasonal abundance & biting behaviour of Mansonia annulifera, M. uniformis & M. indiana & their relative role in the transmission of malayan filariasis in Shertallai (Kerala state).

Three species of Mansonia (Mansonioides) mosquitoes, viz., Mansonia annulifera, M. uniformis and M. indiana were recorded in the Shertallai region of Kerala state. M. annulifera and M. uniformis were recorded throughout the year while M. indiana was seasonal and in small numbers. Their indoor resting density was 3.29, 0.25 and 0.10 per man per h and the man biting density was 24.67, 12.74 and 0.47 per man per night respectively. Vector density fluctuated through seasons and reached a peak during the monsoon/post-monsoon period when there was an increase in the breeding surface area and a relat

Experimental infection of the leaf-monkey, Presbytis cristata, with subperiodic Brugia malayi.

Presbytis cristata monkeys infected through the inoculation of between 200 and 400 subperiodic Brugia malayi infective larvae (L3) in the right thigh, in both thighs or in the dorsum of the right foot were followed up for varying periods of up to about 8 months after infection. All 148 inoculated animals became patent, with mean prepatent periods being between 66 and 76 days. In animals injected in the thigh, the patterns of microfilaraemia were similar, there being a rapid rise in the geometric mean counts (GMCs) of microfilariae during the first 10-12 weeks of patency, which then plateaued a

The susceptibility of five laboratory colonies of mosquitoes to the human nematode Wuchereria bancrofti (Cobbold).

Laboratory colonies of Anopheles gambiae, An. arabiensis, An. merus, An. quadriannulatus and Aedes aegypti formosus were artificially fed on blood containing microfilariae of Wuchereria bancrofti. The anopheline colonies all supported parasite development to the infective stage, with An. quadriannulatus being the most heavily infected. The parasite did not develop at all in the Ae. aegypti formosus colony.

Changes in complement C3 levels following treatment of patients with Brugia malayi infection.

Serum IgG levels and complement C3 levels were assayed on Day 0, 1, 3-4, 7 and 56-70 post-treatment with diethylcarbamizine citrate (DEC) in a series to 26 patients with Brugia malayi infection and 6 volunteers without infection. On treatment, the microfilariae were cleared from the blood within 24 hours. The eosinophils decreased dramatically on Day 1 post-treatment but increased rapidly by Day 4 to 7 and then dropped to normal levels in 45 days. The serum IgG mean levels decreased briefly following treatment with DEC but then returned to original levels. However, the complement C3 levels gra

Edema resulting from experimental filariasis.

Domestic cats and patas monkeys were infected with Brugia malayi so that the worms localized in the regional lymphatics of the hind legs. Reaction to the filarial parasites resulted in visible local edema in cats and disruption of normal lymph flow in the monkeys. Edematous tissue was examined grossly and by light and electron microscopy. Lymph flow patterns were examined by direct observation following injection of lymph staining dye and reflection of the skin, by X-ray following injection of radio-opaque contrast media, and by lymphscintigraphy after subcutaneous injection of radioisotopes.

Differential effects of Bacillus sphaericus strain 2362 on Culex quinquefasciatus and its competitor Culex cinereus in West Africa.

The larval susceptibility to Bacillus sphaericus strain 2362 of the non-man-biting mosquito Culex cinereus and the urban filariasis vector Culex quinquefasciatus, two competitor mosquitoes in polluted habitats, was compared. In the laboratory, both species ingested a similar amount of B. sphaericus spores when fed c. 2 x 10(5) spores per ml for 30 min. However, in the same experiment, third-instar larvae of Cx quinquefasciatus were reduced by 98% at 24 h exposure while Cx cinereus larvae were only reduced by 6% at 72 h. In the field, preimaginal populations of Cx cinereus ingested, within a we

Filariasis of the breast.

Filariasis of the breast is usually seen in endemic areas. Involvement may, however, present years after leaving an endemic area and be associated with circulating microfilariae. We describe the findings in a woman who developed a breast mass three years after a visit to her native India.

The Peer Review Crisis Demands Radical Reform: Why Reviewers Should Become Paid Professional Referees.

The peer review system, fundamental to scientific quality control, faces a significant crisis. As journal editors, we often need to send up to 35 invitations just to secure two reviewers, confronting daily the collapse of voluntary participation. This reflects a critical imbalance: while publication pressure intensifies, willingness to evaluate diminishes, creating "literature elephantiasis", i.e., an overwhelming proliferation of papers exceeding human processing capacity. Current compensation models, relying on token recognition and database access, fail to incentivize quality engagement and…

Filariasis research - from basic research to drug development and novel diagnostics, over a decade of research at the Institute for Medical Microbiology, Immunology and Parasitology, Bonn, Germany.

Filariae are vector borne parasitic nematodes, endemic in tropical and subtropical regions causing avoidable infections ranging from asymptomatic to stigmatizing and disfiguring disease. The filarial species that are the major focus of our institution's research are Onchocerca volvulus causing onchocerciasis (river blindness), Wuchereria bancrofti and Brugia spp. causing lymphatic filariasis (elephantiasis), Loa loa causing loiasis (African eye worm), and Mansonella spp causing mansonellosis. This paper aims to showcase the contribution of our institution and our collaborating partners to fila…

A Study on Serological Reactivity Profile of Different Antigen Preparations with Bancroftian filariasis Human Infection Sera.

BACKGROUND: Lymphatic Filariasis (LF) is one of the incapacitating and mosquito-borne sicknesses that on progression may prompt a few recognizable types of clutters like extreme lymphedema, hydrocele, and elephantiasis. METHODS: Antigenic preparations of B. malayi adult (BmA), S. cervi adult parasites and microfilariae (mf) total parasite extract were used to analyze the serological reactivity profile with human infectious sera collected from endemic areas of Bancroftian filariasis by performing Western blot and ELISA analysis. Sera from healthy human subjects were also included in the study …

The psychosocial and emotional burden of lymphatic filariasis: A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Lymphatic filariasis (LF) is a neglected tropical disease affecting an estimated 882.5 million people at risk of infection. It is caused by the filarial nematodes Wuchereria bancrofti, Brugia malayi, and Brugia timori, leading to lymphedema, and severe deformation of extremities and resulting in both physical and mental health consequences. Affected individuals often suffer from depression, anxiety, and anger, exacerbated by disability, marginalization, and societal rejection due to their physical disability. METHODS: A systematic review of the literature was conducted following t

Risk factors of lymphatic filariasis in Asia: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Lymphatic filariasis remains a major public health challenge across many parts of Asia, where environmental, socioeconomic, behavioral, and programmatic factors converge to sustain transmission. Understanding the risk factors for lymphatic filariasis supports in guiding targeted interventions, including enhancing mass drug administration (MDA), strengthening vector control, and creating educational initiatives for the community. This focused strategy can increase the efficacy and efficiency of LF elimination initiatives in various Asian contexts. METHODS: This review was conducted

Meta-analysis of the prevalence of lymphatic filariasis infection in mosquito vectors.

BACKGROUND: Lymphatic filariasis, caused by Wuchereria bancrofti, Brugia malayi, and Brugia timori, is transmitted by mosquitoes and persists as a major neglected tropical disease. Despite extensive elimination campaigns, information on vector infection prevalence remains fragmented, hindering evidence-based vector control strategies under the World Health Organization's Global Programme to Eliminate lymphatic filariasis. METHODS: A systematic review and meta-analysis was performed in accordance with PRISMA guidelines. Six databases (PubMed, Web of Science, ScienceDirect, CNKI, VIP, Wanfang)
