Congenital Eyelid Anomalies as Temporal Manifestations Along a Developmental Continuum.

PURPOSE: To describe a developmental concept for congenital eyelid anomalies by integrating embryologic evidence and recent molecular data with descriptive anatomy of some of the more common congenital eyelid anomalies. Attention is directed to the importance of developmental stages in which anomalies arise as stage-dependent disturbances along a continuous embryologic timeline, and where minor differences in molecular signaling timing result in graded phenotypic variations. METHODS: Embryologic literature was reviewed and combined with descriptive anatomic, molecular, and genetic studies of

Convexity dural arteriovenous fistula with Sylvian-Labbé collateral pattern: A case report.

Convexity dural arteriovenous fistula (dAVF) is associated with high-grade dAVF and is usually presented with aggressive clinical presentation. Precise diagnosis and understanding the pathogenesis are important to achieving successful treatment without complications. We report a case of dAVF with Sylvian-Labbé collateral pattern, concerning embryological development that was thought to be involved in the vascular architecture and pathogenesis of dural AVF. Thus, a 60-year-old man was presented with sudden onset of seizure with no history of trauma. Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) showed corti

Laparoscopic surgery for colon cancer: a review of the fascial composition of the abdominal cavity.

Laparoscopic surgery has generally been performed for digestive diseases. Many patients with colon cancer undergo laparoscopic procedures. T … ore examined the fascia of the abdominal space using a fascia concept based on clinical anatomy and embryology. Mobilization of the bilateral sides of the colon involves dissection between the fusion fascia of Toldt and the deep subperitoneal fascia. It is important to understand that the right fusion fascia of Toldt is divided into the posterior pancreatic …

Congenital hyporhinia with associated malformations: Case report of a rare congenital anomaly.

Congenital hyporhinia, also known as partial arhinia, is a very rare congenital abnormality of nasal embryogenesis with unknown etiology. It is commonly associated with other craniofacial anomalies which are thought to be caused by an absent or rudimentary nose. A 3-h-old neonate presented to our facility with hypoplastic nasal pyramid, hypertelorism, microcephaly, and micrognathia, a case of congenital hyporhinia with associated anomalies is presented and the embryology and literature review are discussed.

Left inferior vena cava with nutcracker syndrome: A case report.

Nutcracker syndrome is a condition where there is compression of the left renal vein between the aorta and the superior mesenteric artery causing symptoms. Here, we describe the case of a female patient who had symptoms secondary to the compression of a left inferior vena cava between the aorta and the superior mesenteric artery causing a nutcracker syndrome. We will review the etiology, embryology, and imaging of the inferior vena cava and nutcracker syndrome.

Two Rare Vascular Rings With Ductal Origin of the Left Pulmonary Artery: A Previously Unrecognized Syndrome?

We report two neonates with distal ductal origin of the left pulmonary artery who also had rare vascular rings comprised of a left aortic arch and right arterial duct with a midline/rightward descending aorta. To the best of our knowledge, this association has not previously been described, although other abnormalities of the left pulmonary artery in the setting of vascular rings have been reported. We review the embryology, utility of imaging, and clinical course.

Congenital Malformations Associated With a Single Umbilical Artery in Twin Pregnancies.

A single umbilical artery (SUA) was identified in 1.5% of twin pregnancies. The presence of a SUA in a twin pregnancy was associated with a 50% incidence of fetal anomalies, many of them complex and severe. The embryology and pathophysiological mechanisms associated with a SUA are reviewed. Aneuploidy is relatively common and should be considered, particularly in the presence of associated anomalies. Fetal growth restriction is frequent and preterm delivery is common.

Levoatriocardinal Vein and Mimics: Spectrum of Imaging Findings.

OBJECTIVE: This article focuses on the embryology, hemodynamics, and CT and MRI features of levoatriocardinal vein. Levoatriocardinal vein, a form of pulmonary systemic connection, is most commonly seen in left heart obstructive lesions, providing an alternative egress for pulmonary venous blood. CONCLUSION: Levoatriocardinal vein can be differentiated from other more common anomalies, such as anomalous pulmonary venous return, persistent left superior vena cava, and dilated left superior intercostal vein, by its distinctive imaging features.

Goldenhar syndrome with right circumflex aortic arch, severe coarctation and vascular ring in a twin pregnancy.

Goldenhar syndrome (GS) or oculo-auriculo-vertebral dysplasia (OAVD), involves a wide variety of organ systems. Cardiovascular anomalies are among the frequent malformations. The purpose of this report is to introduce a male case of a dizygotic twin pregnancy with GS and right circumflex aortic arch (RCAA), severe coarctation, hypoplastic aortic arch, aberrant right subclavian artery, vascular ring, bilateral renal artery stenosis, and mild Dandy-Walker syndrome. The embryology of RCAA and coarctation is revisited.

Imaging of pulmonary venous developmental anomalies.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this article is to review pulmonary venous embryology and to present the imaging findings of a variety of pulmonary venous developmental anomalies, including total anomalous pulmonary venous connection, partial anomalous pulmonary venous connection, pulmonary vein stenosis and hypoplasia/atresia, and cor triatriatum. CONCLUSION: There are numerous developmental pulmonary venous anomalies. Although these conditions have traditionally been evaluated with echocardiography and angiography, they can be accurately diagnosed using both MRI and MDCT.

Split spinal cord malformation.

The split spinal cord is a rare congenital malformation. We report the rare finding of a split cord malformation in a young girl. Further evaluation of this anomaly revealed a Type I split cord malformation (midline bony septation), with no other concomitant pathological entities. Various hypotheses have been made regarding the embryology of this unusual form of spinal dysraphism, and these are reviewed along with the common clinical manifestations of this intriguing pathological entity.

Goldenhar syndrome in association with agenesia of the internal carotid artery.

The association between Goldenhar syndrome and homolateral internal carotid artery agenesis to our knowledge, has never emerged before. We present a case report in a female child that was examined with tonal audiometry, A.B.R., CT scan, MR, digital-subtraction-angiography and color Doppler. The aim of this report is to present an uncommon pathologic association which also provides a brief review of the embryology of the ear and carotid vessels whilst discussing probable pathogenetic causes.

Computed tomographic appearance of choanal atresia in an alpaca cria.

A 6-hour-old alpaca cria was admitted for evaluation of respiratory distress since birth. Contrast radiography confirmed the presence of bilateral choanal atresia, and computed tomography (CT) evaluation was planned to aid in the surgical treatment. Due to deterioration in the cria's condition, euthanasia was performed prior to the CT examination. Postmortem CT examination was performed to determine the appearance of choanal atresia. The embryology and CT appearance of choanal atresia is discussed.

Right aortic arch symptomatic in adulthood.

We present a patient with progressive dysphagia and shortness of breath due to a right aortic arch with aberrant left subclavian artery that became symptomatic in adulthood. Diagnosis was made after a delay because the possibility of a congenital anomaly was not considered when the patient presented with dysphagia. A review is given of the incidence, embryology, aetiology, diagnostic evaluation and management, as well as a discussion of other congenital aortic arch anomalies.

Holoprosencephaly: new concepts.

Holoprosencephaly represents a broad spectrum of malformations resulting from a lack of separation of the structures of the forebrain. Recent discoveries in the fields of genetics and developmental neurobiology have advanced our knowledge of this complex disorder. By combining this basic-science knowledge with observations of brain morphology, we can better understand the embryology and genetic factors that influence brain development and, ultimately, form more accurate classification systems and stratification measures for predicting patient outcome.

Management of perineal canal anomaly.

A 6-year-old girl presented due to passage of stool through her vulva since birth. Examination revealed a fistulous tract between vestibule of the vagina and an otherwise normally formed anal canal. The tract was successfully excised through an anterior sagittal approach with a defunctioning sigmoid colostomy, which was closed 12 weeks later. The embryology, morbid anatomy, and treatment of this rare congenital anomaly are discussed along with a review of the literature.
