Structural changes in autism reflect atypical brain network organization and phenotypical heterogeneity: a hybrid deep network approach.

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a developmental disorder characterized by heterogeneity in social and emotional responses, language, and behavior. Assessments such as the Social Responsiveness Scale (SRS) can quantify this variability but understanding underlying mechanisms and identifying distinct and shared atypical organization and function of brain networks remains a challenge. Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) have been used to analyze imaging data. However, the relationship between structural brain changes observed in structural MRI (sMRI), the affected brain functional networks inf

The Long-Term Effects of Prenatal Alcohol Exposure on Offspring: Insights from the ALSPAC Cohort.

Prenatal alcohol exposure (PAE) is a significant public health concern, associated with adverse developmental outcomes throughout the lifespan. The Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children (ALSPAC), a globally recognized longitudinal birth cohort, provides a robust dataset for examining the effects of PAE on physical, cognitive, and behavioral health outcomes. A structured search was conducted to identify peer-reviewed studies that utilized ALSPAC data to explore the effects of PAE. Studies were included if they satisfied the inclusion criteria (i.e., published between in English langua

Psychosocial functioning and determinants of the health-related quality of life in children with neurofibromatosis type 1 and cognitive impairments.

PURPOSE: Neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) is an autosomal dominant genetic condition associated with cutaneous and neoplastic manifestations and other physical manifestations, as well as cognitive, psychosocial, and behavioural difficulties. NF1 negatively impacts the health-related quality of life (HRQoL) of children. There is limited evidence regarding the determinants of HRQoL of children with NF1. The aim of this study was to (i) compare the HRQoL of children with NF1 and cognitive impairments to published data of healthy children and children with cancer and (ii) identify specific determina

[The unexplored side of creativity: malevolent creative behavior and its measuring tools].

Creativity encompasses a wide range of topics and practically all aspects of life (arts, schools, workplaces, inventions etc.). The new theme, which is a negative and malevolent type of creativity, has piqued people's interest. And, despite the fact that the number of studies on the issue has expanded in recent years, its relationship with most constructions or predictability has yet to be explored. Aggression (Meshkova, 2018; Hao et al., 2016; Harris & Reiter-Palmon, 2015; Harris, 2013; Lee & Dow, 2011), emotional intelligence (Harris & Reiter-Palmon, 2013), resilience (Wang, Wang & Chen, 202…

Predicting military readiness using objective and subjective indices of neuropsychological impairment in service members with mild traumatic brain injury.

The military is interested in identifying factors to improve the readiness of service members with traumatic brain injury (TBI). TBI outcome studies have primarily used objective neuropsychological data interpreted using the absolute level of functioning (i.e., high average, average, low average), though research suggests it is also important to consider other objective indices of the relative degree of decline (e.g., mild, moderate, severe) and subjective complaints. The current study determined the predictive ability of objective indices of neuropsychological functioning (i.e., absolute leve

White Matter Features Associated With Autistic Traits in Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder.

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is among the most debilitating psychiatric disorders. Comorbid autism spectrum disorder (ASD) or autistic traits may impair treatment response in OCD. To identify possible neurostructural deficits underlying autistic traits, we performed white matter tractography on diffusion tensor images (DTI) and assessed autistic trait severity using the Autism-Spectrum Quotient (AQ) in 33 OCD patients. Correlations between AQ and the DTI parameters, fractional anisotropy (FA), mean diffusivity (MD), axial diffusivity (AD), and radial diffusivity (RD) were examined in ma

Anterior hippocampal dysconnectivity in posttraumatic stress disorder: a dimensional and multimodal approach.

The anterior hippocampus (aHPC) has a central role in the regulation of anxiety-related behavior, stress response, emotional memory and fear. However, little is known about the presence and extent of aHPC abnormalities in posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). In this study, we used a multimodal approach, along with graph-based measures of global brain connectivity (GBC) termed functional GBC with global signal regression (f-GBCr) and diffusion GBC (d-GBC), in combat-exposed US Veterans with and without PTSD. Seed-based aHPC anatomical connectivity analyses were also performed. A whole-brain vo

Prevention by specific perceptual remediation for vulnerable first-graders. Controlled study and follow-up of lasting effects.

In a pretest-posttest design with two matched control groups, 86 first-graders screened as vulnerable to academic failure and behavioral decompensation were each assigned to one of three groups: (1) channel-specific perceptual stimulation, (2) regular academic tutoring (contact controls), or (3) no contact. On most measures, including perceptual and achievement tests and behavior ratings by teachers, group 1 showed more improvement than either of the control groups. Several of these differences were significant (P less than .05, two-tailed). In general, the two control groups came closer to ea

[Self-reported Emotion Regulation Strategies in Children and Adolescents with Mental Disorders].

Emotion regulation (ER) is extensively researched in the context of psychopathology. It is quite controversial if deficits in ER are related to psychopathology across disorders or specifically linked to certain forms of psychopathology. Furthermore, it appears unclear if there are differences in ER depending on the specific emotion to be regulated. There are only few studies comparing different forms of psychopathology in terms of ER, specifically in childhood and adolescence. We explored ER in a consecutive clinical sample seeking help in two outpatient university clinics (N=129, age: 7-17 ye

Age differences in right-wing authoritarianism and their relation to emotion recognition.

This study examined the correlates of right-wing authoritarianism (RWA) in older adults. Participants were given tasks measuring emotion recognition, executive functions and fluid IQ and questionnaires measuring RWA, perceived threat and social dominance orientation. Study 1 established higher age-related RWA across the age span in more than 2,600 New Zealanders. Studies 2 to 4 found that threat, education, social dominance and age all predicted unique variance in older adults' RWA, but the most consistent predictor was emotion recognition, predicting unique variance in older adults' RWA indep

Family and neighborhood disadvantage, home environment, and children's school readiness.

The purpose of this study was to examine associations between family socioeconomic risk, neighborhood disadvantage, and children's school readiness. A sample of 420 children from 48 early childcare programs yielded multi-informant data. The average age was 55.3 months (SD = 6.4), with 38% of children being Black, non-Hispanic, Hispanic, or other minority race (American Indian or Alaska Native, Asian, and Native Hawaiian or Pacific Islander). One third (32.4%) of the parents had annual incomes less than $30,000. We used multilevel structural equation modeling to test direct and indirect associa

Theory of mind in adults with HFA and Asperger syndrome.

Theory of mind was assessed in 32 adults with HFA, 29 adults with Asperger syndrome and 32 neurotypical adults. The HFA and Asperger syndrome groups were impaired in performance of the Strange stories test and the Faux-pas test and reported more theory of mind problems than the neurotypical adults. The three groups did not differ in performance of the Eyes test. Furthermore, correlations between the Eyes test and the three other theory of mind tests were low or absent. Therefore one can question the ability of the Eyes test to measure theory of mind. Of all theory of mind tests used, the self-

Emotion recognition in faces and the use of visual context in young people with high-functioning autism spectrum disorders.

We compared young people with high-functioning autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) with age, sex and IQ matched controls on emotion recognition of faces and pictorial context. Each participant completed two tests of emotion recognition. The first used Ekman series faces. The second used facial expressions in visual context. A control task involved identifying occupations using visual context. The ability to recognize emotions in faces (with or without context) and the ability to identify occupations from context was positively correlated with both increasing age and IQ score. Neither a diagnosis

Can AI singing retain users? Examining how experience, ethical acceptance, and affective engagement shape continuance intention.

INTRODUCTION: With the increasing integration of artificial intelligence into digital music applications, AI singing has emerged as a novel form of human-AI interaction in mobile karaoke platforms. Despite its growing popularity, limited research has examined the psychological mechanisms underlying users' sustained engagement with AI singing, particularly from perspectives integrating affective experience and ethical perception. To address this gap, the present study aims to investigate the technological, affective, ethical, and agency-related factors influencing users' continuance intention t

From free association to free parameters: machine-learning empowers artificial intelligence models to rate the affective-relational aspects of narratives like an expert psychologist.

BACKGROUND: Narrative assessment offers unique insight into psychological functioning but is resource-intensive, requiring extensive expert training and time. Recent work suggests Artificial Intelligence (AI), including moderately sized, adaptable large language models (LLMs), can master narrative assessment's complex, multi-step scoring rules. This study examined whether fine-tuning could enable AI raters to accurately assess narratives. METHOD: We fine-tuned five diverse LLMs (3-7 billion parameters) on two datasets, one for the SCORS-G Affective Quality of Representations (AFF) scale and o

Chinese STEM College Students' AI-Mediated Informal Digital Learning of English: A Hybrid SEM-PNA Approach to the Hedonic-Motivation System Adoption Model.

English proficiency is vital for non-native speakers' career development, yet classroom instruction alone cannot meet practical demands, making informal digital learning of English (IDLE) increasingly important. Artificial intelligence (AI), with conversational and multimodal functions, offers new opportunities for IDLE. However, existing research on AI-mediated IDLE has predominantly focused on language majors and often relied on a single methodological lens, neglecting STEM undergraduates and the complex network dynamics among motivational factors. However, research has largely focused on la

Variants leading to ELAVL2 haploinsufficiency cause a neurodevelopmental disorder with prominent cognitive, behavioral, and neurological features.

RNA-binding proteins (RBPs) regulate gene expression, and a number of RBPs have been implicated in brain function and behavior. Here, we report 16 individuals with a neurodevelopmental disorder and de novo heterozygous variants in ELAVL2, encoding an RBP not previously linked to Mendelian disease. Thirteen individuals were identified through GeneMatcher. Their ELAVL2 variants include two structural, five nonsense, and six missense variants, supporting haploinsufficiency as the primary disease mechanism. The cohort presented with developmental delay, intellectual disability, autism spectrum dis
