Hydrophobic porous polysulfone membrane contactors with gravity-driven Ca(OH)2 absorption for low-energy CO2 removal from biogas.

The upgrading of biogas to biomethane requires efficient and energy-conservative removal of carbon dioxide (CO₂) to enhance calorific value and downstream usability. In this study, a gravity-driven hydrophobic polysulfone (PSf) hollow-fiber membrane contactor was systematically evaluated for CO₂ removal from a synthetic CH₄/CO₂ (60/40 v/v) gas mixture under ambient conditions (23 ± 1 °C and 1 atm). Unlike conventional membrane contactor systems that rely on mechanically driven liquid circulation, the present configuration operates without liquid pumping, thereby eliminating liquid-phase energy

Bioenergy from Coastal bermudagrass receiving subsurface drip irrigation with advance-treated swine wastewater.

Coastal bermudagrass (Cynodon dactylon L.) may be a potentially important source of bio-based energy in the southern US due to its vast acreage. It is often produced as part of a waste management plan with varying nutrient composition and energy characteristics on fields irrigated with livestock wastewater. The objective of this study was to determine the effect of subsurface drip irrigation with treated swine wastewater on both the quantity and quality of bermudagrass bioenergy. The treated wastewater was recycled from an advanced treatment system and used for irrigation of bermudagrass in tw

Exchanges of water and certain water-soluble minerals during passage of digesta through the stomach compartments of young ruminating bovines.

1. Four ruminating bull calves were provided with cannulas in the rumen and abomasum and a sleeve sutured at the omosal-abomasal orifice that permitted digesta flowing from the omasum to be diverted and collected. 2. The calves were each given in turn a high-roughage (HR) and high-concentrate (HC) diet consisting mainly of dried grass and flaked maize in the proportions 3:2 and 1:2 by weight respectively. Water-soluble non-absorbable marker (polyethylene glycol) was also given and the diets were sometimes supplemented with magnesium sulphate. For each diet (HR(0), HR(Mg), HC(0), HC(Mg], collec

Advanced CO2 Capture from Flue Gas by Promoting Amine Solvent Regeneration Using Dual-Functional Graphitized Packing.

Amine-based CO2 capture from flue gas provides a reliable approach for industrial emission reduction, but still suffers from a high energy penalty due to high-temperature regeneration. Catalytic amine solvent regeneration has emerged as an effective strategy to enhance the CO2 reaction kinetics at mild temperatures. However, the current powder catalysts face challenges of heat transfer limitations and weak durability in the practical packing stripper. Herein, we prepared a dual-functional stainless-steel packing with efficient heat transfer and catalytic activity through an in situ carbon modi

Computational Design of Neutral Heteronuclear Alkaline-Earth Metal Complexes Featuring a 2c─3e Bond and Their Application in CO2 Activation.

In contrast to electron-paired bonds, odd-electron bonding systems have garnered significant interest due to their distinctive bonding and radical properties. A series of neutral heteronuclear (AEM-AEM')AMD (AEM = Be, Mg, and Ca) complexes was theoretically designed by binding two distinct alkaline-earth-metal (AEM) atoms with amidinate radical ligands (AMD) via side-on coordination. Upon one-electron transfer from AEM-AEM' to AMD, the electron occupies an AMD nonbonding orbital, avoiding destabilization from rising ligand orbital energy, while a two-center three-electron (2c─3e) bond forms be

From stimulation to attenuation: exposure mode-dependent conjugative transfer of antibiotic resistance gene under tetrabromobisphenol A-induced stress.

Non-antibiotic pollutants can transiently intensify plasmid-mediated dissemination of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs), but long-term effects remain unclear. Here, we investigated how exposure mode (i.e., single versus multiple exposure) differentially shaped RP4-mediated conjugative dissemination of ARGs under environmentally relevant concentrations of tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA). Single TBBPA exposure increased conjugation frequency 8.5-13.2-fold, coincident with elevated intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS), greater adenosine triphosphate (ATP) availability, and higher membrane p

Role of mitochondria transmission in ischemic stroke: Friend or foe?

Ischemic stroke ranks as the second leading cause of mortality and the third disability worldwide. Disruption of energy metabolism and subsequent inflammation driven by oxidative stress constitute significant barriers to functional recovery. Proper distribution and function preservation of mitochondria are essential for maintaining energy homeostasis and modulating the inflammatory response during cerebral ischemia and reperfusion injury. Accumulating evidence indicates that both dysfunctional mitochondrial fragments and functional mitochondria undergo intracellular and intercellular transmiss

A multi-centre metal-free COF@g-C3N4 catalyst assembled with covalent bonds for photocatalytic CO2 reduction.

Photocatalytic carbon dioxide (CO2) reduction technology using solar energy can convert carbon dioxide into fuels and chemicals, and is one of the most effective strategies to mitigate the energy crisis and greenhouse effect. In recent years, covalent organic frameworks (COFs) have flourished due to their unique advantages and have received extensive attention in the field of photocatalytic reduction of CO2. Here, we use the pre-designability of COFs to preserve the aldehyde group at the end of the COF skeleton by the motif strategy, while ensuring its excellent photosensitivity. This facilita

Deciphering the Role of Rhodanine Flanked Non-Fullerene Acceptor Molecules for Efficient Organic Photovoltaics.

In recent years, extensive research has been conducted with the aim of developing non-fullerene acceptors as they have a promising ability to drive the development of cost-effective and highly efficient organic solar cells (OSCs). By harnessing the potential of rhodanine-flanked non-fullerene acceptors (NFAs), we proposed eight new A-D-A type NFAs (SBA1-SBA8) through precise end-cap modifications on both sides of the bridging-core unit. We performed various advanced quantum chemical analyses to unveil these designed materials' potential and compared them with the synthetic reference molecule (

Tuning peripheral acceptors in pyran core functional materials to boost photovoltaic efficiency.

Non-fullerene acceptors (NFAs) play a crucial role in enhancing the performance of bulk heterojunction organic solar cells (BHJ-OSCs). Therefore, new A-π-D-π-A configured NFAs (BDTD1-BDTD7) were developed from BDTR reference through terminal modification with benzothiophene (BT) based acceptors. Density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent DFT (TD-DFT) methods were employed at M06/6-311G (d, p) level to explore the geometrical, electronic, optical and photovoltaic properties of the designed derivatives. Lower energy gaps (Egap= 2.130-2.250 eV) and higher absorption wavelengths (λmax = 73

Deciphering promotion of MoP over MoC in Pt catalysts for methanol-assisted water splitting reaction.

Molybdenum-based compounds show promising promotion effects on Pt catalysts for energy-relevant catalysis reactions. Herein, a more effective promotion effect of MoP than MoC was found in assisting Pt nanoparticles for methanol-assisted hydrogen generation in light of the strong metal-support interaction and synergistic effect between Pt and MoP/C nanospheres. Electrochemical analyses and theoretical calculations demonstrated that Pt-MoP/C facilitated the oxidation and removal of CO intermediates more effectively than Pt-MoC/C. This enhanced performance was attributed to the distinct 6-coordin

Proteomic and metabolic analysis of Moorella thermoacetica-g-C3N4 nanocomposite system for artificial photosynthesis.

Artificial photosynthesis by microbe-semiconductor biohybrid systems has been demonstrated as a valuable strategy in providing sustainable energy and in carbon fixation. However, most of the developed biohybrid systems for light harvesting employ heavy metal materials, especially cadmium sulfide (CdS), which normally cause environmental pollution and restrict the widespread of the systems. Herein, we constructed an environmentally friendly biohybirid system based on a typical acetogenic bacteria, Moorella thermoacetica, coupling with a carbon-based semiconductor, graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3

Increasing prosthetic foot energy return affects whole-body mechanics during walking on level ground and slopes.

Prosthetic feet are designed to store energy during early stance and then release a portion of that energy during late stance. The usefulness of providing more energy return depends on whether or not that energy transfers up the lower limb to aid in whole body propulsion. This research examined how increasing prosthetic foot energy return affected walking mechanics across various slopes. Five people with a uni-lateral transtibial amputation walked on an instrumented treadmill at 1.1 m/s for three conditions (level ground, +7.5°, -7.5°) while wearing a prosthetic foot with a novel linkage syste…

Molecular-Level Decoding of Electron Transfer Dynamics in Metal Nanoclusters.

ConspectusA comprehensive understanding of electron transfer (ET) mechanisms in metal nanoclusters (NCs) is pivotal for unlocking their full potential in diverse chemical, biological, and energy-related applications. Owing to their atomic-level structural precision, ET dynamics in metal NCs can be precisely controlled and fine-tuned at the single-molecule or even single-atom level, thereby facilitating the establishment of well-defined structure-ET-application relationships. Furthermore, metal NCs occupy a unique transitional domain between individual atoms and larger nanoparticles, exhibiting

Molecular-Level Insights into the Interactions of Nicotine and Cotinine with DPPC Phospholipid Bilayers.

Small alkaloids such as nicotine and its major metabolite, cotinine, are widely present in biological and environmental systems, yet their membrane interaction mechanisms and related cytotoxic effects remain poorly quantified. Here, molecular dynamics simulations combined with umbrella sampling were used to investigate the adsorption, distribution, orientation, and transmembrane behavior of nicotine and cotinine in DPPC bilayers. Both molecules rapidly migrated from bulk water to the water-lipid interface within 8 ns and showed strong interfacial enrichment, with residence probabilities of 85%

A CuO-functionalized NMOF probe with a tunable excitation wavelength for selective detection and imaging of H2S in living cells.

Recently, fluorescent nanoscale metal-organic frameworks (NMOFs) have been proven to be useful probes for the detection and imaging of active biomolecules in living cells. However, the excitation wavelengths of these NMOF fluorescence probes are mostly in the ultraviolet region, which unavoidably results in reduced cell activity, limited tissue penetration depth and inevitable biological background interference. Herein, to solve this problem, a CuO functionalized NMOF probe with a tunable excitation wavelength based on Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET) for selective detection and imagin…
