In the course of a survey of gastro-intestinal parasites among humans in Iwo Local Government area in South-Western Nigeria, eggs of helminths found were those of Ascaris lumbricoides, Necator americanus, Trichuria trichiura and Strongyloides stercoralis while protozoan cysts encountered were those of Entamoeba histolytica and Entamoeba coli. The application of molecular techniques to the study of this organism have led to major advances in understanding the pathophysiology of amebic infection. This article reviews what is currently known about the pathogenesis, clinical manifestations, diagnosis, and treatment of amebiasis.

Fecal specimens collected from 456 school children in Gombak, Malaysia, revealed an overall prevalence rate of 62.9%. The prevalence of enteric protozoa was studied in a survey conducted among 150 male homosexual patients in San Francisco. All patients were from a private practice in internal medicine. Each was asked to complete a questionnaire and to submit multiple stool specimens for examination. The aim of this study was to assess the health status of schoolchildren in nine villages of the Kilombero district in Tanzania.
