Approximating Molecular Sepsis Subtypes Using Bedside Data in Resource-Limited Settings: A Multicenter Analysis From Uganda.

IMPORTANCE: Biologically defined sepsis subtypes have been identified in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), but limited access to molecular diagnostics constrains broader evaluation and implementation in resource-limited settings. OBJECTIVES: To determine whether bedside-accessible variables could approximate molecular sepsis subtype assignments among Ugandan adults with sepsis. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: Secondary analysis of two prospective observational sepsis cohorts conducted at Tororo General Hospital (Research in the Epidemiology of Severe and Emerging Infections in Uga

Using participatory epidemiology to investigate the causes of cattle abortion in Southwest Ethiopia.

Cattle abortion, stemming from both infectious and non-infectious causes, lead to notable financial setbacks in the cattle industry. Between October 2020 and October 2021, an epidemiological investigation took place in Southwest Ethiopia. The objective was to determine the magnitude and seasonal occurrence of the presumed causes of cattle abortion. Information for this research was collected through 30 group discussions, each involving 8-12 participants. Various participatory epidemiological tools, including semi-structured interviews, pairwise ranking, matrix scoring, proportional piling, and

The PASTURE project: EU support for the improvement of knowledge about risk factors and preventive factors for atopy in Europe.

Since January 2002, the European Commission is funding a large project, 'Protection against Allergy--Study in Rural Environments' (PASTURE; contract no. QLK4-2001-00250), under the Fifth Framework Program in the field of epidemiology of allergic diseases. The aim of this paper was to describe the background and design as well as the aims of the project. Asthma and allergic disorders are a major public health problem in many Western countries. The aetiology of asthma and allergic disease remains poorly understood despite considerable research. Epidemiology has the potential to add greatly to th

Innovative sterile male release strategies for Aedes mosquito control: progress and challenges in integrating evidence of mosquito population suppression with epidemiological impact.

BACKGROUND: Aedes mosquitoes pose a significant global threat as vectors for several debilitating arboviruses, including dengue, Zika, yellow fever, and chikungunya. Their unique breeding habits, behavior, and daytime activity complicate control efforts, prompting the search for innovative solutions. The sterile insect technique (SIT) and incompatible insect technique (IIT) are promising new techniques under investigation. This review synthesizes findings from field trials on SIT and/or IIT for Aedes mosquito control. METHODS: A scoping review was conducted through comprehensive searches on S

Epidemiology of genital Chlamydia trachomatis in England and Wales.

OBJECTIVE: To describe the recent epidemiology of genital Chlamydia trachomatis infection in England and Wales. DESIGN: Retrospective study of routinely available surveillance datasets and ad hoc prevalence studies. METHODS: Numbers of new cases of genital C trachomatis infection, obtained from the Department of Health and Welsh Office, were combined with the estimated mid-year resident population of England and Wales. Rates were analysed for trend over time using a log linear age period model in GLIM4. Ad hoc prevalence and case finding studies carried out over the past 20 years were critic

Leveraging Artificial Intelligence to Predict Potential TB Hotspots at the Community Level in Bangui, Republic of Central Africa.

Tuberculosis (TB) is a global health challenge, particularly in the Central African Republic (CAR), which is classified as a high TB burden country. In the CAR, factors like poverty, limited healthcare access, high HIV prevalence, malnutrition, inadequate sanitation, low measles vaccination coverage, and conflict-driven crowded living conditions elevate TB risk. Improved AI-driven surveillance is hypothesized to address under-reporting and underdiagnosis. Therefore, we created an epidemiological digital representation of TB in Bangui by employing passive data collection, spatial analysis using

Creation and implementation of a European registry for patients with McArdle disease and other muscle glycogenoses (EUROMAC registry).

BACKGROUND: International patient registries are of particular importance for rare disorders, as they may contribute to overcome the lack of knowledge derived from low number of patients and limited awareness of these diseases, and help to learn more about their geographical or population-based specificities, which is relevant for research purposes and for promoting better standards of care and diagnosis. Our objective was to create and implement a European registry for patients with McArdle disease and other muscle glycogenoses (EUROMAC) and to disseminate the knowledge of these disorders. R

Environmental and Health Effects of Ventilation in Subway Stations: A Literature Review.

Environmental health in subway stations, a typical type of urban underground space, is becoming increasingly important. Ventilation is the principal measure for optimizing the complex physical environment in a subway station. This paper narratively reviews the environmental and health effects of subway ventilation and discusses the relevant engineering, environmental, and medical aspects in combination. Ventilation exerts a notable dual effect on environmental health in a subway station. On the one hand, ventilation controls temperature, humidity, and indoor air quality to ensure human comfort

Childhood physical punishment and later alcohol drinking consequences: evidence from a Chinese context.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of the current study is to estimate a link between early physical punishment in childhood and later alcohol outcomes, taking family history of drinking problems into account, with epidemiological data from China. The yield from previous studies on this relationship is mixed evidence, largely traceable to research design variations, including model specifications that concern parental alcohol or other drug problems (AODPs) that might account for both earlier discipline practices and later drinking problems in the offspring. METHOD: Data are from the World Mental Health Surve

Cycle fatalities in Delhi and their risk factors.

There is a lack of research that investigates the risk factors of cycling in low- and middle-income countries. We present descriptive epidemiology of crashes that involved at least one fatal cyclist, over a three-year period (2016-2018) in Delhi, India. Next, we used an unmatched case-control approach to identify road design risk factors of cycle fatalities. Cases were road segments with at least one cycle fatality, and controls were those with none. We developed logistic regression models with cases and controls as binary outcomes to estimate the odds ratio of site characteristics. There were

Record linkage in Scotland and its applications to health research.

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: This paper will focus on the key concepts behind record linkage and describe how probability matching of Scottish health records can be used for national health research. BACKGROUND: Record linkage can bring together two or more records relating to the same individual. This allows information from multiple sources to be joined together to produce richer data sets for research purposes and has wide applicability in public health and epidemiological research. The probability matching techniques underpinning record linkage bring together records on a patient basis using key

A systematic review of intracranial atherosclerosis epidemiology-the largest contributor to the global ischemic stroke burden?

BACKGROUND: Intracranial atherosclerosis (ICAD) is commonly stated to be the largest contributor to the ischemic stroke burden worldwide. However, there has been little systematic examination of the epidemiology literature. METHODS: PubMed, OVID-EMBASE and manual searches of references from retrieved literature were used to identify studies. Adult studies from 1990 onwards were included, with two reviewers independently reviewing titles and abstracts. Risk of bias was assessed using modified Newcastle-Ottawa Scale. RESULTS: There were 138 studies included in the systematic review. Due to ris

Alcohol as poison: a narrative review of social science scholarship relevant to methanol poisoning in low- and middle-income countries.

AIMS: Methanol poisoning is a tragic and avoidable health emergency that threatens life and often leads to irreversible disability. It primarily occurs when people unwittingly consume beverages contaminated with the chemical compound under the guise of alcoholic spirits. Although reliable data on its burden are unavailable, methanol poisoning is thought to be increasing globally, particularly in low- and middle-income countries. Current scholarship related to methanol poisoning draws almost exclusively from clinical and epidemiological research traditions. In this article, and in the absence o

Temporal trends and geographic variations in mortality rates from tobacco and firearms in the United States.

We explored temporal trends and geographic variations in United States of America (US) mortality rates from smoking and firearms from 1999 to 2019. To do so, we used the publicly available Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Wide Ranging Online Data for Epidemiologic Research (WONDER) with Multiple Cause of Death files from 1999 to 2019. Using age-specific rates and ArcGIS Pro Advanced software for Optimized Hot Spot Analyses from Esri, we generated maps of statistically significant spatial clusters with 90-99% confidence intervals with the Getis-Ord Gi* statistic for mortality fr
