Model eye evaluation of new extended depth of focus designs versus defocus-based lenslet designs for myopia management.

SIGNIFICANCE: Objective through-focus testing with phase alteration utilizing subelements technology indicates improvements in retinal image contrast across a range of retinal defocus. If validated in clinical trials, this approach may provide a better visual experience for wearers, potentially supporting compliance and myopia management outcomes. PURPOSE: This study aimed to evaluate the optical performance of modified axicons and modified light sword elements of phase alteration utilizing subelements lens design (test), compared with two defocus-based control lenslet designs, defocus incorp

Radiometric and safety assessment of a 'low-level red-light' myopia control device.

PURPOSE: Recent literature has demonstrated that 'low-level red-light therapy' may be effective at slowing axial elongation in children, but reports have questioned the safety of some red-light devices. The current work explored the beam characteristics and hazard potential for a myopia control red-light device. METHODS: The optical design and exiting beam characteristics of a sample red-light myopia control device (SECONEE sky-n1201a) were quantified by measuring beam divergence and total flux passing through artificial pupils of 1-9 mm diameter placed at the corneal plane. Retinal exposure

Categorising compression garments and accessories for upper-body lymphoedema.

Compression therapy is pivotal to the management of lymphoedema of the upper limb, breast and trunk. Compression can be achieved with a range of garment types and accessories. Distinguishing between these categories is foundational to using the STRIDE algorithm for compression selection, a tool designed to guide healthcare providers in optimising compression therapy for improved patient outcomes. This article outlines the seven garment categories of circular-knit garments, stiffer circular-knit garments, flat-knit garments, adjustable wraps, decongestive wraps, night-time garments and trunk ga

'Super boots' for soldiers: theoretical ergogenic and thermoprotective benefits of energetically optimised military combat boots.

Soldiers typically perform physically demanding tasks while wearing military uniforms and tactical footwear. New research has revealed a substantial increase of ~10% in energetic cost of walking when wearing modern combat boots versus running shoes. One approach to mitigating these costs is to follow in the footsteps of recent innovations in athletic footwear that led to the development of 'super shoes', that is, running shoes designed to lower the energetic cost of locomotion and maximise performance. We modelled the theoretical effects of optimised combat boot construction on physical perfor

Simulation research on dynamic characteristics of scroll compressor with flexible clearance.

The scroll compressor is a rotating machinery with high-speed and high-precision characteristics. In this paper, a vector model of the kinematic pair was constructed based on two-state clearance. To confirm the adverse effects of tiny clearance (0<r≤0.1mm) on the scroll compressor, a dynamics simulation of the spindle was performed under flexible contact conditions with different clearances. The study indicates that simulation results for flexible and rigid bodies are vastly different, and the former is closer to reality. Compared with the case in an ideal state (0mm), clearance at 0.01mm and

Oblique effects with multisegment spectacle lenses: 1. Images of a point object.

INTRODUCTION: Multisegment (MS) spectacles are intended to slow myopia progression by modifying images falling on the peripheral retina. Some published optical treatments of these lenses assume normal incidence of light at the surfaces, but images falling on the peripheral retina are usually associated with oblique ray pencils. Here, we model representative images of point objects produced by the Hoya MiyoSmart MS spectacle lens when oblique ray pencils are used. METHODS: Various imaging aspects of the MS lens alone and in combination with a suitable accommodating eye model for a 4D myope wer

Design and Initial Validation of an Infrared Beam-Break Fish Counter ('Fish Tracker') for Fish Passage Monitoring.

Effective monitoring of fish passage through river barriers is essential for evaluating fishway performance and supporting adaptive river management. Traditional methods are often invasive, labor-intensive, or too costly to enable widespread implementation across most fishways. Infrared (IR) beam-break counters offer a promising alternative, but their adoption has been limited by high costs and a lack of flexibility. We developed and tested a novel, low-cost infrared beam-break counter-FishTracker-based on open-source Raspberry Pi and Arduino platforms. The system detects fish passages by anal

Passive Add-On Mechanism with Rotational Dampers for Step-Down Support in Electric Wheelchairs.

This study proposes a damped add-on mechanism to mitigate the impact of an electric wheelchair on a step-down. A rotational damper is mounted on the add-on mechanism to reduce the velocity of wheel fall, thereby mitigating the impact. By selecting the damper based on a mechanical model of the wheelchair and the rider, the impact can be effectively mitigated for users with different body weights. Performance evaluation experiments confirmed that the damper could reduce the peak acceleration of the wheelchair seat when the rear wheels landed on the ground to 27% of that without the damper. Towards accurate transcutaneous CO2 sensing: A behavioral model using time-correlated single photon counting.

We present a behavioral model for estimating the lifetime of rapid fluorescence signals, intended for use in a lifetime-based transcutaneous CO2 sensing system, an important tool for assessing ventilation effectiveness, implemented with time-correlated single photon counting (TCSPC) and silicon photomultipliers (SiPMs). The model reproduces the complete optical and electronic signal chain using measured and specified component parameters, while incorporating nonidealities such as dark counts, afterpulsing, crosstalk, and excitation leakage. Using an optimized post-processing pipeline, the syst

Flow-driven magnetic microcatheter for superselective arterial embolization.

Minimally invasive interventions performed inside brain vessels with the synergistic use of microcatheters pushed over guidewires have revolutionized the way aneurysms, strokes, arteriovenous malformations, brain tumors, and other cerebrovascular conditions are being treated. However, a substantial portion of the brain vasculature remains inaccessible because the conventional catheterization technique based on transmitting forces from the proximal to the distal end of the instruments imposes stringent constraints on their diameter and stiffness. Here, we overcame this mechanical barrier by mic

Design and Photometric Optimization of a Low-Cost Phototherapy Bed for Neonatal Jaundice.

PURPOSE: Neonatal jaundice is a common condition that can lead to serious complications if left untreated. Although phototherapy is the standard treatment, existing devices are often costly, energy-intensive and fail to deliver the required intensity or provide uniform irradiance, particularly in low-resource settings. This study aims to design and optimize a low-cost, energy-efficient phototherapy bed that meets clinical requirements for irradiance intensity and spatial uniformity. METHODS: A multi-objective photometric optimization approach was applied to design the phototherapy bed, focusi

Strain-Insensitive, Crosstalk-Suppressed, Ultrawide-Linearity Iontronic Tactile Skin from a Synergistic Segment-Embedded Strategy.

Tactile sensing arrays play a crucial role in human-machine interaction, robotics, and artificial intelligence by enabling the perception of physical stimuli on robotic surfaces or human skin. However, skin-attachable sensor arrays still suffer from strain interference and signal crosstalk under stretching or bending, particularly on curved or deformable surfaces. Here, we present a stretchable tactile array that is both strain-insensitive and crosstalk-suppressed, achieved via a hierarchically segmented design that mitigates lateral and vertical deformations synergistically. By tessellating h

Humanoid finger with rigid-flexible-soft structure.

Soft robotic grippers offer adaptable and safe manipulation across diverse objects, but they often lack the output force and stability of rigid grippers. Developing fingers that deliver high force while delicately handling small or fragile objects remains a key challenge. Here, we design a humanoid finger with a rigid-flexible-soft structure, composed of rigid tubular bones, flexible joint springs with automatic reset and resistance to deformation under external forces, and a soft silicone skin. A pneumatic membrane actuator is placed between the bones and skin. To test its performance, we bui

Evaluating the Efficacy of Thin Convex-probe Endobronchial Ultrasound Bronchoscope in Cadaveric Models.

BACKGROUND: The convex-probe endobronchial ultrasound (CP-EBUS) bronchoscope is widely used in clinical practice. Despite improvements, the existing CP-EBUS remains limited in accessing areas beyond the mediastinum due to its large distal end diameter, long rigid tip segment, and oblique viewing angle. To address this limitation, Olympus Medical Systems Corporation developed the thin CP-EBUS (TCP-EBUS). This study aimed to compare the accessibility and puncturing ability of TCP-EBUS with existing CP-EBUS in cadaveric models. METHODS: Ten bronchoscopists conducted this study using 2 cadaveric

Development of a Novel Endotracheal Tube to Measure Posterior Laryngeal Pressure.

OBJECTIVES: The development of an endotracheal tube (ETT) prototype to measure the pressure on the posterior glottis during intubation. METHODS: Three ETTs, size 6, 7, and 8 mm, were modified with a piezoelectric pressure sensor. These ETTs were then used to intubate a laryngeal model. Pressures were measured at a hypopharyngeal laryngeal angle (HLA) of 90°, and the laryngeal platform was raised to create a more acute HLA ranging from 90° to 45°. These same ETTs were also used to intubate the larynx of a fresh frozen cadaver, with pressure measured with the head in neutral and flexed position

Design of a Phantom Mimicking Rectal Lymph Nodes for Magnetomotive Ultrasound.

OBJECTIVE: Durable and stable phantoms for verifying and validating the new magnetomotive ultrasound technique are lacking. Here we propose a phantom design to address this need. METHODS: A mixture of styrene-butylene/ethylene-styrene (SEBS) in mineral oil and glass beads as a scattering material acted as a bulk material, in which a polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) inclusion containing magnetic nanoparticles in water solution and graphite was embedded. The design mimics nanoparticle-laden lymph nodes embedded in mesorectal fat, as would be the clinical scenario for diagnostic support of staging rectal
