[Peripheral sterile corneal infiltrates after small incision lenticule extraction].

A 31-year-old female patient with refractive error in both eyes underwent small incision lenticule extraction. On the 4th day after surgery, arc-shaped peripheral corneal infiltrates appeared in the right eye. Tobramycin and dexamethasone eye drops, 0.3% gatifloxacin eye drops, and a corneal bandage lens were applied to the eye. After bacterial infection was ruled out, dexamethasone sodium phosphate was injected subconjunctivally near the corneal lesion. The symptoms improved and the corneal lesion subsided afterwards.

Utilization of emergency ophthalmology services in Taiwan: a nationwide population study.

The aim of this study was to conduct a nationwide survey of the use of emergency ophthalmology services using a sub-dataset of one million beneficiaries sampled from Taiwan's National Health Insurance Research Database (NHIRD) for the years 2008 through 2012. By analyzing this population dataset, the study illustrates the disease landscape of emergency eye care services. The five-year, one-million-person NHIRD sub-dataset for 2008 through 2012 was used to explore emergency visits and ophthalmology specialty visits and to analyze the associated demographics and diagnosis codes based on the Inte

Vernal keratoconjunctivitis: a severe allergic eye disease with remodeling changes.

Vernal keratoconjunctivitis (VKC) is an unusually severe sight-threatening allergic eye disease, occurring mainly in children. Conventional therapy for allergic conjunctivitis is generally not adequate for VKC. Pediatricians and allergists are often not familiar with the severe clinical symptoms and signs of VKC. As untreated VKC can lead to permanent visual loss, pediatric allergists should be aware of the management and therapeutic options for this disease to allow patients to enter clinical remission with the least side effects and sequelae. Children with VKC present with severe ocular symp

Neurodevelopmental findings in children 20-30 months of age with postnatal Zika infection at 1-12 months of age, Colombia, September-November 2017.

BACKGROUND: Zika virus (ZIKV) infection during pregnancy can cause infant brain and eye abnormalities and has been associated with adverse neurodevelopmental outcomes in exposed infants. Evidence is limited on ZIKV's effects on children infected postnatally within the first year of life. OBJECTIVE: To determine whether any adverse neurodevelopmental outcomes occurred in early childhood for children infected postnatally with ZIKV during infancy, given the neurotoxicity of ZIKV infection and the rapid brain development that occurs in infancy and early childhood. METHODS: The Colombia Instituto

A unique case of hypervirulent Klebsiella pneumoniae acute cholecystitis complicated by portal vein thrombophlebitis: A case report and literature review.

Hypervirulent Klebsiella pneumoniae remains a significant global public health concern, characterized by a unique syndrome involving monomicrobial primary pyogenic liver abscesses, often leading to metastatic complications such as endophthalmitis, meningitis, and other infections. These infections are frequently observed in immunocompetent hosts or diabetic patients, particularly those of Asian ethnicity. In this report, we present the case of a 66-year-old Burmese female, currently residing in the United States, who presented with severe swelling, pain, discharge, and vision loss in her left

Perspective: Water-Filtered Infrared-A-Radiation (wIRA) - Novel Treatment Options for Chlamydial Infections?

Water-filtered infrared-A-radiation (wIRA) is a promising therapeutic method, which is particularly used as supportive treatment for wound closure, and wound infection treatment and prevention. High penetration properties of the heat field and beneficial effects on wound healing processes predispose wIRA irradiation to be a non-invasive treatment method for bacterial infections in superficial tissues. Since Chlamydia trachomatis still represents the leading cause of infectious blindness in third world countries (WHO http://www.who.int/topics/trachoma/en/) and wIRA displays beneficial effects o

[Contact lenses. 2: Contact lens associated infections].

Contact lens wearers, especially those who wear soft or extended wear contact lenses, are at increased risk of suffering from keratitis. Among the causes of corneal infections, an inadequate hygiene or overextended wear play an important role. An insufficient cleaning and disinfection leads to contamination with pathological germs. Sites of entry for these germs are corneal microlesions, caused by the setting and removal of contact lenses, and epithelial defects, as a result of the wearing of old or defective contact lenses. Primary eye diseases of patients who wear contact lenses can be alter

Systemic viral infections and their retinal and choroidal manifestations.

Viruses are one of the most common causes of infections involving the posterior segment of the eye. Such infections can occur either on a congenital or an acquired basis, and may affect primarily the retina or the choroid. Congenital cytomegalovirus (CMV) and rubella infections may result in retinitis. CMV retinitis is also the most common cause of acquired viral retinitis, primarily because of the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). Other types of viral retinitis, such as those caused by herpes simplex or herpes zoster, can occur in immunocompromised or immunocompetent individuals. Ret

Rhegmatogenous retinal detachments in patients with AIDS and necrotizing retinal infections.

Rhegmatogenous retinal detachments can occur in patients with acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) and necrotizing retinal infections. Of 68 patients with AIDS and necrotizing retinal infections seen between 1983 and 1987, rhegmatogenous retinal detachments developed in 16 patients (27 eyes). In this group, cytomegalovirus retinopathy was present in 75% (12 of 16) of patients, 18.8% (3 of 16) had probable herpes simplex virus retinopathy, and 6.2% (1 of 16) had toxoplasmic retinochoroiditis. Retinal detachment was bilateral in 68.8% (11 of 16) of patients. The retina was reattached succe

First Documented Successful Treatment of Chronic Postoperative Fungal Endophthalmitis Induced by Trichosporon Inkin with Fluconazole.

This report details an uncommon occurrence of chronic endophthalmitis following cataract surgery attributed to an infection by Trichosporon inkin (T. inkin). The infection was identified through MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry along with sequencing analysis. Although the patient exhibited a robust immune response, the infection escalated quickly from the right eye to the left. Treatment involved vitrectomy and peeling surgery on the right eye, paired with systemic fluconazole antifungal therapy and intravitreal injection, resulting in significant recovery. The visual acuity of the right eye enhanc

Capnocytophaga canimorsus blebitis: case report and review of literature.

BACKGROUND: Capnocytophaga canimorsus is a facultative anaerobic, slow-growing, capnophilic, Gram-negative bacillus, that is commonly found in the microflora of canine and feline oral cavities. Capnocytophaga infections are an emerging zoonotic disease that can cause fatal systemic infections in immunocompromised individuals. Localized ocular Capnocytophaga infections, including keratitis, blepharitis, and endophthalmitis, can lead to severe eye threatening situations. To our knowledge, there is currently no documented case of Capnocytophaga canimorsus blebitis with bleb perforation after trab

Sexually transmitted infections and HIV in ophthalmology.

The ocular and periocular manifestations of sexually transmitted infections are heterogeneous in etiology, manifestations, and complications. Etiologic agents include bacteria, viruses, parasites, and protozoa, which are most frequently transmitted via direct ocular contact with an active lesion or infected bodily fluid, autoinoculation, or dissemination from a distant site. Vertical transmission most commonly occurs perinatally during vaginal delivery. The complications of ophthalmia neonatorum can be severe, with the potential for permanent blindness or life-threatening systemic involvement

Candida glabrata as an aetiological factor of the fulminant course of panophthalmitis.

INTRODUCTION: The role of fungi in infections in immunocompromised patients is a growing problem in both diagnosis and treatment. Candida species are the most common cause of fungal, endogenous endophthalmitis and infections of the cornea. CASE STUDY: A patient was admitted to hospital due to acute inflammation of the tissue of the left orbit, 1.5 years after the corneal penetrating transplantation of the left eye with intracapsular extraction of lens and simultaneous anterior vitrectomy. The microbiological system identified: Streptococcus pyogenes, Staphylococcus aureus, and Candida glabrat

Panophthalmitis complicated with asymptomatic pyogenic liver abscess caused by Klebsiella pneumoniae: A case report.

RATIONALE: Panophthalmitis is a severe, vision-threatening condition that may result from endogenous spread of infection, often presenting with systemic symptoms. Klebsiella pneumoniae (Kp) is a known cause of endogenous panophthalmitis, typically associated with underlying conditions such as diabetes and often linked to pyogenic liver abscesses. However, cases presenting solely with ocular symptoms are exceedingly rare. This report presents a unique case of Kp panophthalmitis with a concurrent asymptomatic liver abscess, emphasizing the importance of systemic evaluation in atypical ocular inf

[Ocular infections of the elderly].

A CLINICAL ASPECT DEPENDING ON THE PHYSIOPATHOGENESIS: Ocular infections are a frequent motive for ophthalmological consultations in geriatric settings because of the mechanical factors related to age (modifications in palpebral dynamics and lacrymal function) and in local and general immune factors leading to the rapid and/or more severe development of infections. The mechanism of microbial contamination of the eye also determines the clinical damage: predominantly local (dirty hands, traumas) with involvement of the surface tissues (conjunctive and cornea) or general, hematogenic or neurogen
