During deep tissue dissection in the face, it is sometimes difficult to distinguish the facial nerve from surrounding tissue, leading to a risk of facial nerve injury. To identify the facial nerve during such procedures, we used a fluorescence-assisted near-infrared camera. Indocyanine green (ICG)-assisted direct visualization was used intraoperatively in 13 cases. The procedures included excision of neurofibromas (n = 10) and lymphatic malformations (n = 3). Intravenously injected ICG was distributed systemically and filled the lumen of epineural vessels around the nerves (vasa nervorum) with

Fifteen to 20 percent of patients with major facial trauma suffer vision-threatening injuries. Not only does the early identification and management of such ophthalmic insults frequently carry a better visual prognosis, but manipulations during facial fracture repair may exacerbate unrecognized eye trauma. In addition, ophthalmic problems not documented before facial reconstruction may be interpreted as direct complications of surgery. Thus, all physicians who treat patients with trauma above the mandible should appreciate the fundamentals of ophthalmic evaluation and emergency management. Thi

Maxillofacial injuries are relatively frequent. These may be complicated by cranioencephalic injuries or large facial wounds. We report our experience with the initial management of these lesions in an emergency unit setting. In 2007, we observed 105 patients with maxillofacial injuries. Maxillofacial injuries were associated with cranio-encephalic injuries in 69 patients (65.7%) and with polytrauma in 31(29.5%), while in 5 cases (4.8%) they were isolated. The main causes of trauma were motorcycle accidents (60%). All patients were treated in accordance with the Advanced Trauma Life Support gu…

A trend of increasing number and severity of injuries associated with use of personal watercraft (PWC) has been noted as the use and popularity of PWC also rises. The rate of injuries secondary to PWC use is greater than that from other water sports. Multiple etiologies of injury have been reported, including closed head trauma, spinal injuries, facial fractures, chest trauma, abdominal injuries, and drowning. These injuries may occur from collision with other objects, falls from the PWC, and encounters with the hydrostatic jet stream. The most significant contributing factors to injury seem t

Facial nerve injury in rats have been widely used to study functional and structural changes that occur in the injured motoneurons and other central nervous system structures related with sensorimotor processing. A decrease in long-term potentiation of hippocampal CA3-to-CA1 commissural synapse has recently been reported related to this peripheral injury. Additionally, it has been found increased corticosterone plasmatic levels, impairment in spatial memory consolidation, and hippocampal microglial activation in animals with facial nerve axotomy. In this work, we analyzed the neuronal morpholo

BACKGROUND: The face is a frequent site of burn, but prevalence rates vary and reports are often limited to one healthcare setting. We examined the incidence of facial burns in the Netherlands in Emergency Departments (ED), hospitals and burn centres. Additionally, we identified which patient, injury and burn-related characteristics were predictors of facial burns, facial surgery and facial reconstruction in burn centres.
METHODS: A retrospective, observational study was conducted including data from the Dutch Injury Surveillance System, the National Hospital Discharge Register and burn centr

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study is to investigate peculiar patterns of facial asymmetry following incomplete recovery from facial paralysis that require optimal physical therapy for effective facial rehabilitation, and to decrease the incidence of avoidable facial sequelae.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study involved 41 patients who had facial sequelae following the treatment of various facial nerve diseases from March 2000 to March 2007. All patients with a followup of at least 1 year after the onset of facial paralysis or hyperactive function of the facial nerve were evaluated with the gl

We routinely identify the facial nerve to avoid facial nerve injury during most otologic surgery. Since 1985, we have used a facial nerve stimulator/monitor as an added safety feature in 383 consecutive otologic and neurotologic cases. In our last 30 middle-ear, 8 retrolabyrinthine vestibular neurectomy, and 14 acoustic neuroma cases we used the monopolar stimulator probe-tip to determine threshold currents needed to produce facial twitch. Stimulation thresholds varied according to the amount of soft tissue or bone overlying the facial nerve. The stimulator was useful for predicting dehiscence

Cephalic tetanus is defined as a combination of trismus and paralysis of one or more cranial nerves. Cranial nerves III, IV, VI, VII, and XII may be affected, but the facial nerve is most frequently implicated. A 64-year-old female visited hospital for left ptosis followed by facial palsy after a left forehead abrasion in a car accident. At nine days post injury, left ptosis developed, left facial palsy developed twelve days post injury, and at fifteen days post injury, trismus and dysphagia developed. The following day, there was progression of symptoms to generalized tetanus, such as dyspnea

Patients with facial trauma often experience a psychological burden from their injuries. This study aimed to identify risk factors for adverse mental health outcomes in patients affected by facial trauma, using the 'Integrating Mental and Physical Healthcare: Research, Training and Services' (IMPARTS) screening tool. All patients >18 years of age who completed more than one IMPARTS screening tool in the Oral and Maxillofacial Trauma Clinic between 2019 and 2021 were included in this study. This tool was used to assess the risk of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), generalized anxiety disor

Silent sinus syndrome is a rare condition that typically affects the maxillary sinus, with only a few reported cases of frontal sinus involvement. Blockage of the sinus ostium leads to persistent hypoventilation, creating negative pressure and eventual sinus collapse. This report describes a previously undocumented case of facial asymmetry due to frontal silent sinus syndrome, following multiple childhood nasal injuries. A 23-year-old male presented with unilateral nasal obstruction, right-sided septal deviation and facial asymmetry. He sustained multiple childhood nasal injuries, requiring ma

As the most prominent portion of the human body, the face embraces a multifaceted responsibility for functionality and survival while contributing to identity and self-image. Inopportunely, due to its distinctive anatomical location, the face as a unit is highly suspectable to trauma, particularly in warfare. As a result, facial injury creates a physical and psychological trauma that needs to be addressed immediately. In the following article, a detailed literature review was conducted to examine the interplay between facial injuries throughout multiple wars in Iraq and their management. The a…

CONCLUSIONS: Fish inflicted critical facial injuries might be dangerously underestimated prima facie. The impact might be energetic enough to penetrate deep facial and vital cranial structures, hence thorough examination and imaging are recommended. OBJECTIVE: To explore the effect of peripheral blood lymphocyte cells cultured in vitro on the facial nerve repair and regeneration.
METHOD: Facial nerves branch-ramus buccolabialis of 20 Wistar male rats were dissected and sutured immediately. Then they were divided into two groups randomly as lymphocytes transfusion group and control group (no cell transfusion). Each group was divided into two sub-groups as 2 w and 8 w. The action potential conduct velocity of the facial nerve was measured and the facial neuron number with HRP retrograde tracing method was counted.
RESULT: In 8 weeks the a

Compound muscle action potential (CMAP) recording provides an objective electrophysiological assessment of facial nerve function after injury. In rodent models, vibrissal CMAPs serve as quantitative surrogates of facial nerve integrity; however, practical descriptions of CMAP recording setups using widely available systems remain limited. In this study, we detail a practical and reproducible method for recording vibrissal CMAPs following direct stimulation of the facial nerve trunk in rats, using a BIOPAC-based system. CMAPs were recorded before and after unilateral facial nerve crush injury,

A retrospective analysis of clinical-radial examination was made in 1946 patients with polytrauma. In 82% of them severe cranio-cerebral traumas and extracranial injuries were revealed. The diagnosis of fractures of the skull bones on the basis of survey radiography was possible but in 2% of the patients. Cranio-cerebral and craniofacial traumas appeared much more often than injuries of other anatomical areas, reaching 79.4%. Spiral computed tomography was the main method of early diagnosing polytrauma which allowed detecting the character, localization and volume of traumatic injuries of the
