Necrotizing fasciitis is a rare and potentially lethal soft tissue infection. We report a case of trochanteric femur fracture in a patient who underwent fracture fixation and developed necrotizing fasciitis. A literature review on the topic will be addressed.

Chronic lymphedema and lymphangitis are common adverse effects following treatment for gynecological cancer. Because the early symptoms of necrotizing fasciitis are similar to those of lymphangitis, fatal outcome can occur if patients or physicians underestimate this condition. Here, we present a case of necrotizing fasciitis in a patient with chronic lymphedema.

A 48-year-old Thai male farmer presented with progressive swelling of the right eyelid and high-grade fever. His visual acuity declined and the right side of his forehead developed a necrotic skin lesion with a purulent discharge. CT of the orbits suggested orbital cellulitis with subperiosteal abscess. Intravenous ceftriaxone and clindamycin were given empirically but then switched to vancomycin and meropenem because of rapid deterioration together with clinical sepsis. Burkholderia pseudomallei was isolated from the blood 3 days after the treatment, and the antibiotics were then switched to

We present two cases of life-threatening, necrotizing infections of the head and neck region, a rare infectious process in young children, that progressed to bacteremia and sepsis in two toddlers. To date there have been no reports of cervical necrotizing fasciitis in toddlers under two years of age. Immunocompromised children may be at higher risk for developing fulminent infections. Optimal management requires a combination of medical and surgical interventions. An aggressive surgical approach may be required to adequately clear the infection.

Infection with Aeromonas species has been reported to occur in neutropenic patients. Necrotizing fasciitis caused by Aeromonas species is uncommon but potentially life-threatening. We herein describe three cases of fulminant necrotizing fasciitis caused by Aeromonas sobria in neutropenic patients. These cases shared many clinical characteristics, including shock, coagulopathy, multiple organ failure and rapidly deteriorating and eventually fatal clinical courses. In all cases, Aeromonas sobria was resistant to most antibiotics, except quinolones. Our experience suggests that necrotizing fascii

Necrotizing fasciitis is a rare, life-threatening and rapidly spreading soft-tissue infection that results in necrosis of the muscle, fascia and surrounding tissue. It can be result of a polymicrobial synergistic infection or a streptococcal infection. The authors report a case of necrotizing fasciitis occurring in the knee of a 65-year-old woman following an uneventful primary total knee arthroplasty and resulting in above-the-knee amputation. Having in mind severe infections like necrotising fasciitis, one should be aware of the possibility of such postoperative complications especially in p

BACKGROUND: Necrotizing fasciitis is a serious infection that originates in the subcutaneous tissues. Although many reports have been published about necrotizing infections of other anatomical sites, retroperitoneal necrotizing soft tissue infection is a rare entity that has been described in only a few case reports. The etiology and clinical course of retroperitoneal necrotizing fasciitis can be variable and it is often difficult to identify the etiology of the infective process.
CASE REPORT: We report a 58-year-old man with rapidly progressive, gas-producing, necrotizing inflammation in the

We report a case of necrotizing fasciitis caused by Vibrio cholerae O137 in an immunocompromised 49-year-old man. The infection was acquired following a minor traumatic injury and exposure to seawater during the summer of 2009 in Italy. Although highly immunocompromised, the patient survived. The strain was cytotoxic, invasive, and adhesive and contained a fragment of the El Tor-like hemolysin (El Tor hlyA) gene.

OBJECTIVE: To review our management of cervical necrotizing fasciitis (CNF) with the use of adjunctive hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBO).
STUDY DESIGN: Case series with chart review.
SUBJECTS AND METHODS: Evaluation of ten patients with CNF between 2001 to 2006.
RESULTS: There were five male and six female patients. Mean age was 43 +/- 11 years. Eight cases resulted from an odontogenic source. Comorbidities included diabetes mellitus, hypertension, and substance abuse. All patients had computed tomography scans performed, received intravenous antibiotics, and underwent surgical debridement. E

Necrotizing fasciitis in the neonatal period is a rare, life-threatening condition. Previous cases of neonatal necrotizing fasciitis in the perianal region were speculated to have been initiated by rectal mucosal trauma secondary to rectal temperature measurements. We observed a case of fatal perianal necrotizing fasciitis in a neonate where the process began as a red ring surrounding the anus and guiac-positive stools, detected after a rectal temperature measurement. We speculate that the perianal necrotizing fasciitis that subsequently developed might have been initiated by a minor rectal mu

Cervical severe skin and soft tissue infections and necrotizing fasciitis originate from dental or pharyngeal infections. When compared to other forms of skin and soft tissue infections, they are recognized late, usually after one week of evolution often in a patient receiving antibiotic treatments. Extensions toward adjacent anatomical structures including mediastinum lead to a life-threatening prognosis. The cutaneous appearance of these severe infections is usually inflammatory cervical signs combined to facial oedema. These moderate clinical signs require immediate surgery after CT scan im

Necrotizing fasciitis, a severe soft tissue infection, was first described 80 years ago. It occurs rarely in obstetric and gynecology practice. We reviewed medical records of 2,894 women who had underwent an abdominal hysterectomy at the Social Security Agency Aegean Obstetrics and Gynecology Teaching Hospital between 2001 and 2005, and identified 5 (0.17%) cases of necrotizing fasciitis, which are described.

Necrotizing skin infections, although rare, have proven difficult to manage and treat in a wide range of patient groups. The risks of extensive tissue necrosis, systemic sepsis and potentially organ failure make this disease one which health-care professionals must be aware of. Treatment involves rapid debridement and intensive therapy including broad spectrum antibiotics. Appropriate wound care is essential as is a great deal of psychological support for the patient and relatives. This article also highlights some of the risk factors which may pre-dispose a patient to infection.
