Ultra-processed food intake and prevalence of osteoporosis in US adults aged 50 years and older: a cross-sectional analysis.

UNLABELLED: Dietary quality may be a factor in the progression of non-communicable, chronic diseases. This analysis of NHANES data demonstrates association between consumption of UPF and prevalence of osteoporosis and osteopenia in adults 50 years and older. UPF intake is an important consideration when recommending dietary patterns for optimum bone health PURPOSE: Declining bone mineral density in older adults can result in osteoporosis, leading to decreased physical function, quality of life, and increased risk of mortality. Poor dietary quality may contribute to the progression of this dise

Neural correlates of inhibitory control during a simple food go/no-go task in adolescents varying in familial obesity risk.

Maternal obesity increases the risk of offspring obesity but neurobehavioral mechanisms are not well understood. Using a simple fMRI task to minimize the contribution of task demands to group differences, we investigated food-related inhibitory control and underlying neural circuits in 71 14-18y olds (33M, 38F), of whom n = 22 were lean with a lean biological mother (lean low-risk, 'lean-LR'), n = 19 lean with a biological mother with obesity/overweight (lean high-risk, 'lean-HR'), and n = 30 with obesity/overweight ('overweight'). On two separate days, under fasted (474 ml 0 kcal water preloa

Towards healthy school neighbourhoods: A baseline analysis in Greater London.

Creating healthy environments around schools is important to promote healthy childhood development and is a critical component of public health. In this paper we present a tool to characterize exposure to multiple urban environment features within 400 m (5-10 min walking distance) of schools in Greater London. We modelled joint exposure to air pollution (NO2 and PM2.5), access to public greenspace, food environment, and road safety for 2,929 schools, employing a Bayesian non-parametric approach based on the Dirichlet Process Mixture modelling. We identified 12 latent clusters of schools with s

Bradykinin release from high molecular weight kininogen and increase in plasma kallikrein-like activity following sensory stimulation by food in the rat.

Cephalic stimulation by food elicits, among other responses, dilatation of mesenteric blood vessels preparatory for digestion. The possible participation of bradykinin (BK), a powerful endogenous vasodilator, in this response was studied in fasted rats prior and following stimulation by sight and scent of food (sensory stimulation, SS), actual ingestion being denied to the animals. BK content of plasma high (HK) and low molecular weight kininogen (LK) was determined by bioassay on the atropinized, antihistamine-treated isolated guinea-pig ileum following release by trypsin from heat/acid denat

The neurocircuitry of fasting-induced glucocorticoid release.

Activation of the hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal gland (HPA) axis confers adaptations to homeostatic perturbations including food scarcity. A comprehensive new study by Douglass et al. disentangled how agouti-related peptide (AgRP)-expressing neurons of the arcuate nucleus (ARC) trigger rapid HPA-axis activation in response to fasting, which is mediated by repression of a tonic, inhibitory neuro circuit.

The effect of hunger and state preferences on the neural processing of food images.

Visual information plays a key role in guiding food-related decisions. While previous studies have shown that features such as calories and naturalness are encoded by the brain, upon simply seeing the stimuli, it remains unclear how this encoding is shaped by the observer's current state. In this study, we explore the effect of 1) hunger state, 2) task relevance, and 3) current individual preference on the processing of visual food information. Participants (N = 23) underwent two EEG sessions: one after fasting overnight and another after eating normally. During each session, participants did

Conscious and unconscious brain responses to food and cocaine cues.

Visual presentation of appetitive and negative cues triggers fast responses in the human brain. Here we assessed functional MRI (fMRI) responses to food, cocaine, and neutral cues presented at a subliminal ("unconscious", 33 ms) and supraliminal ("conscious", 750 and 3000 ms) level in healthy, cocaine naïve volunteers. Because there is evidence of circadian variability in reward sensitivity, our second aim was to assess diurnal variability in the brain's reactivity to cues. Sixteen participants completed two randomly ordered fMRI sessions (once 9-11 AM and another 5-7 PM). in which food, cocai

An outbreak of Salmonella Enteritidis food poisoning following consumption of chicken shawarma: A brief epidemiological investigation.

BACKGROUND: Shawarma, a popular meat-based fast food could be a source of foodborne outbreak due to non-typhoidal Salmonella (NTS). A clustering of acute gastrointestinal (GI) illness following intake of chicken shawarma occurred primarily among the staff and students of a tertiary care hospital in southern India. METHODS: A case-control study was conducted among 348 undergraduate medical students (33 cases, 315 controls).  Data was collected using direct interviews and a simple online questionnaire. Epidemiological associations of GI illness were evaluated at three levels of exposure namely-

A quantitative identification fluorescent probe for highly selective detection of Cu2+ in food and environmental samples.

The potential accumulation of copper ions (Cu2+) in the food chain poses significant risks, making it imperative to develop efficient tools for real-time monitoring of Cu2+ levels in food, plants, and biological systems. In this study, two novel fluorescent probes, RC-1 and RC-2, were synthesized using triphenylamine derivatives through a condensation reaction for the detection of Cu2+. Among the two probes, probe RC-2, which contains 4-aminobenzamide, exhibited excellent selectivity, ultra-fast response (<30 s), a low detection limit of 26.8 nM, high water solubility, and ease of synthesis. Synergistic interaction between leptin and cholecystokinin to reduce short-term food intake in lean mice.

Leptin is a circulating protein involved in the long-term regulation of food intake and body weight. Cholecystokinin (CCK) is released postprandially and elicits satiety signals. We investigated the interaction between leptin and CCK-8 in the short-term regulation of food intake induced by 24-hr fasting in lean mice. Leptin, injected intraperitoneally (i.p.) at low doses (4-120 microg/kg), which did not influence feeding behavior for the first 3 hr postinjection, decreased food intake dose dependently by 47-83% during the first hour when coinjected with a subthreshold dose of CCK. Such an inte

Quantitative and Fast Sterility Assurance Testing of Surfaces by Enumeration of Germinable Endospores.

A fast Endospore Germinability Assay (EGA) was validated with traditional plate counts to enumerate single endospore germination events for monitoring surface sterilization. The assay is based on a time-gated luminescence microscopy technique enabling visualization and enumeration of individual germinating endospores. Germinating endospores release calcium dipicolinate to form highly luminescent terbium dipicolinate complexes surrounding each germinating endospore. EGA and heterotrophic plate counting (HPC) were used to evaluate the swab/rinse recovery efficiency of endospores from stainless s

Influence of diet and sample collection time on 77 laboratory tests on healthy adults.

OBJECTIVES: We studied the effect of a standardized breakfast or lunch before blood sampling on 77 analytes. DESIGN AND METHODS: The mean difference between assays from 20 healthy adults was calculated on blood samples taken before and after food intake. Significant differences were tested using two-tailed Student t-test and compared to the acceptable limits derived from analytical and intraindividual biological variation. RESULTS: Most of the analytes investigated were not significantly affected by food intake. Six of them were influenced by breakfast or lunch: triglycerides, glucose, creat

Effect of vagotomy on acute pancreatitis in rats.

One hundred and eighty-two SD rats were randomly divided into the normal control group, fast operating group and food-intake operating group. The experimental model of acute pancreatitis (AP) in rats was established by injecting 5% sodium taurocholate into the pancreatic duct of rat according to Aho's method. The sandostatin was used for positive contrast. The concentrations of serum amylase, calcium, C reaction protein (CRP) and interleukin-6 (IL-6) were assayed respectively at different time points. The pathological sections were observed. Each operating group contained 10 rats. The mortalit

Fasting during Ramadan and acute kidney injury (AKI): a retrospective, propensity matched cohort study.

BACKGROUND: During the month of Ramadan, Muslims abstain from daytime consumption of fluids and foods, although some high-risk individuals are exempt. Because fasting's effects on the risk of acute kidney injury (AKI) have not been established, this study assesses the relationship between fasting and risk of AKI and identifies patients at high risk. METHODS: A single-center, retrospective, propensity-score matched, cohort study was conducted with data collected from adult patients admitted to the emergency room during Ramadan and the following month over two consecutive years (2016 and 2017).

Carry-Over Effects of Desiccation Stress on the Oxidative Status of Fasting Anuran Juveniles.

Amphibians are sensitive to deteriorating environmental conditions, especially during transition to a terrestrial environment which is full of uncertainties. Harsh conditions, such as desiccation during earlier stages, affect different larval traits with possible carry-over effects on juvenile and adult life histories. The first consequences of the effects can be seen in juveniles in the challenges to find food and the ability to survive without it in a terrestrial habitat. Body size and the internal energy reserves acquired during the larval phase play an important role in this period. Herein

Interaction of apolipoprotein AIV with cholecystokinin on the control of food intake.

Apolipoprotein AIV (apo AIV) and cholecystokinin (CCK) are peptides that act both peripherally and centrally to reduce food intake by decreasing meal size. The present study examined the effects of intraperitoneally administered bolus doses of recombinant apo AIV, CCK-8, and a combination of subthreshold doses of apo AIV and CCK on 4-h food intake in rats that were fasted overnight. Apo AIV at 100 microg/kg reduced food intake significantly relative to the saline control for 1 h, as did doses of CCK-8 at or above 0.125 microg/kg. Doses of apo AIV (50 microg/kg) or CCK (0.06 microg/kg) alone ha

Hedgehog-related gene wrt-10 mediates intergenerational effects of fasting on larval size in Caenorhabditis elegans.

Low food availability can cause delays in reproductive aging to allow for eventual improvements in conditions, or might promote investment in offspring to increase their survival. Here, we tested whether Caenorhabditis elegans Hedgehog-related wrt-10 mediates these responses. We found that reproductively aged wild-type worms and wrt-10 ( aus36 ) null mutants both had a greater likelihood of progeny production after 24-h or 48-h fasting periods in early adulthood, indicating that wrt-10 is not required for this response. However, unlike wild-type, wrt-10 ( aus36 ) mutants did not produce longer

[Glycogen storage disease by amylo 1,6-glucosidase deficiency (author's transl)].

A case of liver glycogen storage disease with amylo 1,6-glucosidase deficiency is reported. Enlarged liver was found at birth, and it is now accompanied by splenomegaly, low fasting blood glucose with ketonuria, elevation of transaminase values and glycogen accumulation with connective periportal tissue in liver histological study. In this glucogenosis results of functional tests on carbohidrate metabolism and glycogen enzymatic assay showed a direct relationship between functional and biochemical behaviour of liver cells. Amylo 1,6-glucosidase deficiency is accompanied by absence of glucogeno
