Extraction of metals (Ni, Co) from chromite overburden of Sukinda mines of Orissa, India, with the culture filtrate of Aspergillus niger was studied. Results showed that the amounts of metals leached varied directly with reaction temperature and period of fermentation. The culture filtrate was analyzed for citric and oxalic acids, and contained only oxalic acid-the concentration of which increased with time. Penbutolol and propranolol were administered orally in a dosage of 40 mg once daily and 80 mg twice daily, respectively to 12 patients with hypertension and impaired renal function. Both drugs caused a significant decrease in mean arterial pressure and heart rate. Serum creatinine concentration increased significantly by 10% during therapy with propranolol without concomitant decrease in creatinine clearance. No such effect was seen with penbutolol. GFR measured with [125I]-iothalamate showed no significant changes with both drugs.

The glomerular filtration rate (GFR) and the extracellular fluid volume (ECV) were determined in 5 rhesus monkeys infected with P. knowlesi in comparison with 6 control monkeys by using 51Cr-EDTA. As the disappearance curve of the radioactivity showed a close fit to a double exponential equation, the data was therefore analysed by an open 2-compartment system.
