Influence of egg storage on hatchability, embryonic development and vitamin status in hatching broiler chicks.

Storage of eggs for 14 d prior to incubation depressed hatchability by 10%. Most of the increase in embryonic mortality (64%) occurred during the first week of incubation, with a further 30% taking place during the third week. Chicks hatching from stored eggs did not show any increased incidence of physical abnormalities characteristic of vitamin deficiencies. Chicks from stored eggs showed haematological abnormalities characteristic of mild macrocytic anaemia. Such changes can result from deficiencies of folic acid or cobalamin. Biochemical and haematological data did not suggest impairments

The neurologic aspects of transcobalamin II deficiency.

Thirty-four symptomatic cases of inherited transcobalamin II (TCII) deficiency were analysed in order to determine the frequency and nature of neurologic manifestations. In no instance was there definite evidence of a neurologic disorder at the time of presentation as a young infant. One child of 2 1/2 years transiently lost deep tendon reflexes at a time of suboptimal treatment. A syndrome of mental retardation and other neurologic manifestations was observed in three cases, all with the following in common: (1) an extended duration of illness of 2-17 years; (2) inadequate or not treatment wi

The Role of Micronutrient Deficiencies in Nutritional Anemia Beyond Iron: An Expert Perspective on the Scope and Strength of the Current Evidence.

There is a tacit assumption that the majority of nutritional anemia is caused by iron deficiency. However, several other key micronutrients are involved in iron and/or erythrocyte metabolism and thus play a role in the development of nutritional anemia. This consensus paper provides an updated review that synthesizes current evidence on the role of individual micronutrients, beyond iron, in the development of nutritional anemia and identifies emerging hypotheses and potential mechanistic links to erythropoiesis and iron metabolism involving nutrients of both established and growing interest. [Megaloblastic anemia in children].

Megaloblastic anemia in children is mainly due to folic acid or vitamin B12 deficiencies. However dosages of these two vitamins must be performed before any vitamin supplementation or blood transfusions are given in order to establish precisely the etiologic diagnosis. A disorder in the metabolism of these vitamins must be considered in any infants in whom the onset of neurological abnormalities is associated with the characteristic hematological abnormalities. Imerslund's syndrome is a specific vitamin B12 malabsorption defect that warrants consideration as it is easy to recognize on the basi

Haemoglobin A2 levels in vitamin B12 and folate deficiency.

Haemoglobin A2 levels were measured in 50 patients with vitamin B12 deficiency, 50 patients with folate deficiency, and six patients with combined deficiencies of these vitamins. All were normal except for three patients with vitamin B12 deficiency, who had a slightly elevated Hb A2 level; this fell to normal after vitamin B12 therapy. It is concluded that haemoglobin A2 levels are usually normal in vitamin B12 or folate deficiency. However, raised levels of haemoglobin A2 may be found, but these are not as high as is found in beta thalassaemia trait and should not cause difficutly in diagnosi

Pneumocystis jiroveci pneumonia in an infant with severe folate deficiency.

Pneumocystis jiroveci pneumonia is rare in immunocompetent children. Severe folate deficiency affects T cell function, potentially increasing susceptibility to opportunistic pathogens. We report the case of an 11-month-old child who developed P. jiroveci pneumonia in the setting of severe nutritional folate deficiency and review the literature regarding the influence of folate on immunity.

MicroRNA responses to cellular stress.

Recent work has begun to explore the instrumental role that small noncoding RNA species, particularly microRNAs (miRNA), have both in classifying human tumors and in directing embryonic development. These studies suggest that developmental programs in essentially all organisms studied are set, in part, by varied expressions of miRNAs and that neoplasia is characterized by altered expression of miRNAs. Reasoning that these observations are linked, we examined whether cellular exposures that induce both developmental anomalies and cancer alter miRNAs. Using microarrays of 385 known human miRNAs,

Red Cell Pyruvate Kinase Deficiency With Hypertriglyceridemia: A Case Report.

Red cell pyruvate kinase (PK) deficiency is a genetic disorder affecting the enzyme PK in red blood cells. A deficiency in PK leads to hemolytic anemia. Hypertriglyceridemia means elevated levels of triglycerides in the blood. The hypertriglyceridemia disorder can be primary or secondary to an underlying disease. Hypertriglyceridemia with β-thalassemia major is a known association and is called hypertriglyceridemia-thalassemia syndrome. A four-month-old male child was found to have milky serum. On investigation, there was severe anemia, with triglycerides at 1197 mg/dL and high lactate dehydro

Nutritional deficiencies in the pediatric age group in a multicultural developed country, Israel.

Nutrient deficiencies are prevalent worldwide. Diseases and morbid conditions have been described to result from nutritional deficiencies. It is essential to address nutrient deficiencies as these may lead to chronic long-term health problems such as rickets, iron deficiency anemia, goiter, obesity, coronary heart disease, type 2 diabetes, stroke, cancer and osteoporosis. In the present review we surveyed the extent and severity of nutritional deficiencies in Israel through a selective and comprehensive Medline review of previous reports and studies performed during the last 40 years. Comparison of blood levels of vitamin A, beta-carotene and vitamin E in abruptio placentae with normal pregnancy.

Levels of vitamin A, beta-carotene and vitamin E in peripheral venous blood of women in abruptio placentae and in normal pregnancy have been compared. Chemical methods were used for the estimation of these compounds. The results show that levels of all three compounds in abruptio placentae are lower than those found in the normal pregnancy. We have earlier shown that levels of ascorbic acid in these subjects are low while other studies have indicated that levels of folic acid in them are also low. Based on our present and earlier published work it is suggested that abruptio placentae is a cond

[Thromboembolic events, abortions and a sick infant--unusual presentation of a vitamin deficiency].

Homocysteine is a risk factor for the development of thromboembolic disorders and vascular diseases. Furthermore, complications during pregnancy have been ascribed to hyperhomocysteinemia. We report on a pregnant woman being substituted by high doses folic acid for hyperhomocysteinemia. Thereby, the underlying pernicious anemia was masked. After birth, the neonate was exclusively breastfed. At the age of 5 months, the infant had to be admitted to hospital due to severe vitamin B(12)-deficiency. Using parenteral vitamin B(12) substitution, homocystein levels of the mother normalized and the inf

Death from drug-induced hemolytic anemia.

Fatal hemolytic anemia occurred in a 71-year-old man after trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole was given for presumed cystitis. Administration of this combination has previously caused multiple hematologic reactions by affecting folic acid metabolism. Megaloblastic anemia and neutropenia have been produced by both of these agents, while sulfamethoxazole alone has induced acute hemolytic anemia in patients with hereditary deficiency of glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase. Although hematologic complications of trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole treatment usually follow long-term or high-dose therapy, acute r

Uncovering Glucose-6-Phosphate Isomerase (GPI) Deficiency in a Five-Year-Old With Hemolytic Anemia in Bahrain.

Glucose-6-phosphate isomerase (GPI) deficiency is a rare autosomal recessive enzymopathy that presents with chronic nonspherocytic hemolytic anemia. We report the case of a five-year-old Bahraini girl with a history of neonatal jaundice and recurrent episodes of anemia. A comprehensive diagnostic workup, including peripheral smear, bone marrow examination, and whole-exome sequencing, revealed a homozygous likely pathogenic variant in the GPI gene, confirming the diagnosis of GPI deficiency. The patient was managed with supportive measures including blood transfusions, folic acid, vitamin D sup

The significance of folate deficiency in alcoholic and nutritional neuropathies: analysis of a case.

OBJECTIVE: To elucidate the significance of folate deficiency in alcoholic and nutritional neuropathies. METHODS: We preformed a comprehensive clinical screening of a patient with chronic alcoholism who manifested neuropathy, macrocytic anemia, liver dysfunction, and folate deficiency. RESULTS: A 33-y-old woman with chronic alcoholism presented with acutely progressive glove- and stocking-type sensorimotor polyneuropathy. Although an episode of neuropathy preceded the current episode by 2 y, its cause was never determined. The findings of nerve conduction studies were indicative of axonal ne
