INTRODUCTION: Occupational disorders are the causes of lost workdays, inefficient performance by workers, and medical costs. This study was done to explore the understanding and perspectives of paddy farmers on foot care and their preventive strategies.
METHODS: In-depth interviews (IDI) using a semi-structured IDI guide were conducted among the experienced (40 years and above) paddy farmers over two months. A total of 15 farmers were interviewed, and then a qualitative content analysis was done using ATLAS.ti. An inductive approach was taken.
RESULTS: In-depth interviews showed three themes…

OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study is to investigate the short-term effects of 3D-printed and prefabricated foot orthoses on the management of flat feet.
DESIGN: In this single-blinded study, 63 patients with flat feet were enrolled via convenience sampling. They were randomly assigned to the control and experimental groups, receiving prefabricated and customized 3D-printed foot orthoses, respectively. The assessment tools included a visual analog scale and a modified Quebec User Evaluation of Satisfaction with Assistive Technology questionnaire. The patients scored their pain at weeks 0 and 4 u…

OBJECTIVES: The aim of the study was to evaluate foot posture and the mechanical properties of extrinsic foot muscles in fibromyalgia.
METHODS: Patients with fibromyalgia (n = 86) and age- and gender-matched controls (n = 41) were included in the study. Foot Posture Index (FPI), Beighton and Brighton criteria were used to evaluate static foot posture, joint hypermobility, and benign joint hypermobility syndrome (BJHS), respectively. Tonus, elasticity, and stiffness of the extrinsic foot muscles including gastrocnemius medialis, tibialis anterior, and peroneus longus were measured by the Myoto…

Early detection of PAD and neuropathy is essential to prevent diabetic foot ulcers (DFU). The study aimed to identify the inter reliability of diabetic foot check-up (Ipswich touch test [IpTT] and palpation of the dorsal pedis and posterior tibialis) between nurses and caregivers. An inter-operator observation study between nurses and caregivers was conducted to evaluate the reliability of diabetic foot check-up in eight public health centers in eastern Indonesia. Patients with diabetes mellitus (DM) with and without diabetic foot ulcer (DFU, n = 144) were included in this study. The nurse d…

OBJECTIVE: The objectives of this study were to: (i) review and provide a narrative synthesis of three-dimensional (3D) foot surface scanning methodological and statistical analysis protocols, and (ii) develop a set of recommendations for standardising the reporting of 3D foot scanning approaches.
METHODS: A systematic search of the SCOPUS, ProQuest, and Web of Science databases were conducted to identify papers reporting 3D foot scanning protocols and analysis techniques. To be included, studies were required to be published in English, have more than ten participants, and involve the use of…

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to design an adjustable posterior leaf spring (PLS) ankle-foot orthosis (AFO) with an affordable material in low-income countries and investigate the mechanical properties between an adjustable PLS AFO and a standard PLS AFO.
STUDY DESIGN: Static and dynamic mechanical testing.
METHODS: This study preliminarily tested a new adjustable PLS AFO against a standard PLS AFO. Each AFO design was tested with mechanical testing using an Instron 8801 universal testing machine.
RESULTS: The stiffness value of the adjustable PLS AFO was greater than that of the standard PL…

BACKGROUND: We report our experience on the use of a distally based sural flap for soft tissue reconstruction of foot and ankle defects in patients with diabetic foot.
METHODS: The actual study is a retrospective, open, non-controlled, and clinical study of 25 patients treated with diabetic foot on whom reconstruction with distally based sural neurocutaneous flaps was performed from May 2019 to December 2021.
RESULTS: The mean age was 64.9 years, and there were 15 male and 10 female patients. The mean follow-up was 9.8 months, which ranged from 6 to 12 months. The size of the flaps ranged fr…

OBJECTIVES: To determine the risk factors for recurrence and persistence of non-healing foot ulcers resulting in minor and major amputations.
METHODOLOGY: This was an ambispective cohort analysis of persons with diabetic foot ulcers consulting at the diabetic foot clinic of East Avenue Medical Center. Data were analyzed through multiple logistic regression.
RESULT: Two hundred sixteen patients with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus and diabetic foot ulcers were included in the analysis; 50.9% were males and the mean age of the cohort was 55.8 ± 9.9 years. Outcomes of foot ulcers were: healed 44.5% (h…

About one-third of admissions to the surgical unit annually are diabetes foot infections in need of amputation In St. Kitts and Nevis. However, the risk factors related to diabetes foot and amputation remain unknown. This study investigated factors associated with diabetic foot and amputation (DFA). Retrospective case control study design, and purposive and quota sampling method was used to recruit the participants. Patients with and without DFA were interviewed at two main hospitals, several primary health centres, and a private doctor's office during July and August 2018. Self-development qu…

BACKGROUND: Foot orthoses (FOs) have been widely prescribed to alter various lower limb disorders. FOs' geometrical design and material properties have been shown to influence their impact on foot biomechanics. New technologies such as 3D printing provide the potential to produce custom shapes and add functionalities to FOs by adding extra-components.
RESEARCH QUESTION: The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of 3D printed FOs stiffness and newly design postings on foot kinematics and plantar pressures in healthy people.
METHODS: Two pairs of ¾ length prefabricated 3D printed F…

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to assess the risk factors associated to recurrent diabetic foot ulcers after implementing a new preventive comprehensive foot care (CFC) program carried out by a podiatrist and an endocrinologist at a multidisciplinary diabetic foot unit (MDFU) and its potential impact in decreasing recurrent ulcers.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: A retrospective cohort study including consecutive patients who attended the MDFU for the first time from 2008 to 2014 complaining of a diabetic foot ulcer that finally healed. Patients were monitored until ulcer recurred …
