A 59-year-old man showed a saccular aneurysm due to a penetrating atherosclerotic ulcer, as well as a small type B aortic dissection located in the proximal descending aorta. Perforation of the uterus by an intrauterine device (IUD) is a serious complication occurring at or following 1/350 to 1/2,500 insertions. It is more common among women with 'lost' IUDs. Ventriculoperitoneal shunting is the treatment of choice for hydrocephalus in its different etiologies. Mechanical failure and infections are common complications of shunting. OBJECTIVE: The replacement of an otosclerotic fixed stapes by a prosthesis significantly modifies the function of the normal ossicular chain. Because the ear works as a pressure receptor, a piston prosthesis will both modify the sound pressure transmission and respond to the ambient air pressure changes in a different way than the normal stapes. The aim of the study was to determine the incidence of lost or misplaced stents and to identify associated immediate- and long-term consequences. The study reviewed 11,881 cases with one or more intracoronary stents. From this group 40 cases were identified where stents were prematurely displaced from the stent delivery device. Sixteen were removed with bioptomes or snares. Three were removed surgically. Of the 21 remaining stents, 7 were deployed at a site remote from the target lesion and 14 were lost. This report describes two cases in which proximally migrated Amsterdam-type biliary stents were extracted using transhepatic snare introduction into the bile ducts. In one case, the migrated stent was removed transhepatically via a percutaneous approach, and in the other a combination transhepatic-endoscopic extraction was successful. No complications were encountered. Percutaneous introduction of snare via transhepatic route offers a good alternative to surgery for removal of migrated biliary stents.
