Between January 1987 and December 1989, a retrospective study was done of 42 patients with 56 closed intra-articular calcaneal fractures treated with no reduction and early mobilisation at the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, Toa Payoh Hospital. There were 12 left, 16 right and 14 bilateral fractures. Using the Creighton-Nebraska Health Assessment for calcaneal fractures, 38 (67.9%) fractures were rated as excellent and good and the average follow-up period was 3.2 years. Thirty-five (83.3%) of the patients were able to work after an average interval of 4.5 months. The complications included

BACKGROUND: Isolated anterior wall acetabulum fracture (AWF) represents a rare injury. There is a paucity of information available about this fracture and no classification has been proposed so far. The aim of this study was to analyse the various possible fracture patterns, related treatment approaches and to develop a new classification system.
METHODS: Common search engines were systematically searched, according to the PRISMA guidelines. Data relating to the studies that reported surgical approaches and results about isolated AW fractures were included. Data quality was also assessed. We

INTRODUCTION: Distal femur fractures are high-velocity injuries which accounts for 7-10% of all femoral fractures of which 5-10% are open fractures. Despite advances in techniques and implants, treatment remains a challenge, in many situations due to increased risk of infection, non-union and loss of range of motion. Surgical management of such complex injury includes radical debridement with stabilization followed by management of gap non-union with appropriate techniques and restores the range of motion.
CASE REPORT: We present a case of 20-year-old man who had suffered multiple orthopedic

RATIONALE: Posterior wall comminuted fractures of the acetabulum are typically caused by high-energy trauma, and the complex anatomical structure of the acetabulum makes their treatment challenging. However, reports of the treatment of fresh acetabular fractures combined with femoral head necrosis are extremely rare.
PATIENT CONCERNS: A 57-year-old male, injured in a car accident, presented with right hip pain and limited mobility. At the age of 50, the patient was diagnosed with avascular necrosis of the right femoral head, experiencing right hip pain and a limp while walking, for which cons

BACKGROUND: Olecranon fractures are common injuries and may be indicated for open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF). Surgical techniques include plates and screws, intramedullary screw, Kirschner wire with tension band (KWTB), and all-suture fixation. The purpose of this study was to compare surgical and patient-reported outcomes between these fixation techniques.
METHODS: Adult patients who underwent surgery were retrospectively queried (January 2016-December 2020). Demographics, comorbidities, fracture characteristics, surgical details, elbow range of motion (ROM), incidence and time t

INTRODUCTION: Certain orbital floor fracture types have been associated with orbital soft tissue entrapment leading to irreversible inferior rectus muscle injury and permanent diplopia. This "trapdoor" fracture occurs more frequently in the pediatric population since the facial skeleton is elastic. Literature on adult entrapment is scarce. We discuss the spectrum of clinical and radiologic presentations of inferior rectus muscle entrapment in the adult population and propose a novel classification based on bone and soft tissue interactions seen on imaging.
METHODS: Three adult patients with i

Patellar fractures are potentially debilitating injuries due to loss of extensor mechanism function, resulting in an inability to extend the leg. Traditionally, these fractures have been surgically managed with open reduction and internal fixation using a tension band construct. This can be performed with K-wires or cannulated screws with suture or cable as the tension band. Plate osteosynthesis is another option that is increasing in popularity. Incorporating the tension band construct converts tensile force into a healing-compatible compressive force. However, these techniques often fail whe

PURPOSE: Open comminuted intraarticular distal femur fracture represents a formidable challenge for the orthopaedic surgeon for the inherent fracture complexity, soft tissue damage, and contamination. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the mid-term outcome results and safety of using the Ilizarov fixator to treat these fractures.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: The study included 22 fractures treated by debridement with reduction and stabilization by Ilizarov external fixator. The mean age was 35 years. Gustilo grade of open fracture was III-A (19 cases), III-B (2 cases), and III-C (1 case). Six

Fractures of the patella account for about 1% of all skeletal injuries and can lead to profound impairment due to its crucial function in the extensor mechanism of the knee. Diagnosis is based on the injury mechanism, physical examination and radiological findings. While the clinical diagnosis is often distinct, there are numerous treatment options available. The type of treatment as well as the optimum timing of surgical intervention depends on the underlying fracture type, the associated soft tissue damage, patient factors (i.e. age, bone quality, activity level and compliance) and the stabi

Distal humerus fractures in adults are treated by open reduction and internal fixation, which produces good results in the majority of patients. However, in elderly patients or in cases with metaphyseal comminution, stable fracture fixation still remains problematic. Anatomical joint reconstruction and primary stable osteosynthesis are often particularly difficult to achieve in this group of patients since poor bone mineral quality is frequently encountered. Consequently, longer immobilization is necessary, which is known to negatively influence functional outcome. Over the past few years, dou

BACKGROUND/AIM OF STUDY: Fractures of the medial condyle of humerus are uncommon in adults. The aims of this study were (i) to highlight the rarity of this injury, (ii) to focus on the problems in management of cases which present late, and (iii) to compare the results of surgical excision of medial condyle with those of internal fixation.
METHODS: Seven adult medial humeral condyle fractures were seen over a 10-year period. Four cases were surgically fixed within three weeks of the injury; one case refused operation. Two cases which presented late, one with an isolated trochlear fracture, an

Combined fractures of the femoral head and acetabulum due to ballistic injuries are rare injuries, especially in the elderly. We present a case of a 70-year-old female who sustained a gunshot wound to the left hip, resulting in a comminuted femoral head fracture and posterior wall acetabular fracture. She was treated with open reduction and internal fixation of the acetabulum, as well as bipolar hemiarthroplasty for treatment of her femoral head fracture. At her 18-month follow-up visit, the patient was doing well and had no complaints.

Results after conservative or surgical treatment of comminuted fractures of the head of the humerus are often unsatisfactory and complicated by pain and a severely decreased range of motion. In these patients good results have been obtained by replacement of the humeral head with the Isoelastic Humeral Head Prosthesis. Fourteen cases are reported and their results discussed.

Spinopelvic injuries result from high energy trauma with overloading through the sacrum. These lesions can accomplish either bone fractures, ligament injuries or, most commonly, both. They may be accompanied with other associated life threatening injuries and cause biomechanical instability with potential fracture non-union, mal-union and subsequent lifetime pain and disability. Surgical stabilization of spinopelvic injuries requires planning in order to apply the appropriate osteosynthesis principles (compression; neutralization; buttressing and tension band). In general terms simple sacral f

Closed injuries involving peripheral nerves are likely to occur in a severely comminuted fracture, a dislocated or stretched joint, or a fracture adjacent to a joint. Peripheral neuropathy associated with fractures are usually neurapraxia lesions and have an excellent prognosis for spontaneous recovery. Peripheral neuropathy associated with open injuries has a prognosis related to the etiology; lacerations are usually neurotmesis lesions and should be completely examined, explored, and sutured; shotgun wounds demand debridement and visualization of involved peripheral nerves; high-velocity mis

PURPOSE: We evaluated the usefulness of skull fracture analysis using three-dimensional computed tomography skull fracture scores (3DCT-SFs) in cases of fatal falls.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: From April 2016 to September 2020, 46 cases of fatal falls from great heights (33 males, 13 females; mean age: 52.7 (range: 18-89) years) were examined using routine postmortem CT. The 3DCT-SFs were determined as the sum of the fracture line lengths measured on a volume rendering image. Skull fracture severity was classified into four stages according to the 3DCT-SFs. These stages were compared by macroscop
