Crib-biting in the horse is frequently prevented in the short-term by horse-owners using physical means. BACKGROUND: Antidepressants are used in the treatment of irritable bowel syndrome but it is unclear whether any symptomatic improvement is due solely to correction of an associated affective disorder, or whether these drugs have effects on bowel function which may be of therapeutic benefit. Intestinal transit is known to be abnormal in some irritable bowel syndrome patients.
METHODS: We have studied the effects of imipramine, a tricyclic antidepressant with mixed pharmacological properties, and paroxetine, a selective 5-hydroxytryptamine re-uptake inhibitor, on intestinal transit times.

A safer method of oxidation of Cr2O3-containing fecal samples from transit-time studies was developed using sodium peroxide to replace perchloric acid as the oxidizing agent. The percentage recovery of Cr2O3 with this method was compared with that of perchloric acid method for samples containing quantities of fecal ash and Cr2O3 typical of those from rodent transit-time studies. A prospective double-blind cross-over trial of oral cisapride 10 mg and placebo was performed to determine the effects of cisapride on the transit of colonic contents in normal humans. Six male volunteers were studied twice using colonic transit scintigraphy.
