Persistent mercury hot spot in Central Europe and Skalka Dam reservoir as a long-term mercury trap.

This study aimed to evaluate the relevance of the floodplain pollution sinks of the legacy mercury (Hg) hot spot in Kössein-Röslau river system (east Bavaria, Germany) for further mobilisation and fluvial transport of mercury in suspended particulate matter (SPM), as an important transport medium of Hg in aquatic systems. The channel belt fluvial erosion as the secondary pollution pathway was also considered. The hot spot has originated from the production of Hg compounds such as C2H5HgCN and C6H5HgCl in Chemical Factory Marktredwitz, and even more than 30 years after the factory abandonment,

Mercury and methylmercury bioaccumulation in a contaminated bay.

The bioaccumulation and the main source of total Hg (THg) and methylmercury (MMHg) in the deposit-feeding polychaete Neanthes japonica collected in Jinzhou Bay, China, were investigated. Compared with the historical data, THg bioaccumulation in polychaetes collected in sediment of Jinzhou Bay was distinctly higher due to higher sediment THg concentration, but MMHg bioaccumulation was significantly lower. THg accumulation in polychaetes mainly derived from its accumulation in sediment. However, MMHg bioaccumulation in polychaetes did not correlate with Hg concentration in sediment. Besides sedi

Metal accumulation in riverine macroinvertebrates from a platinum mining region.

South Africa is the world's main supplier of Pt. The Bushveld Igneous Complex in South Africa contains 75% of the world's Pt resources. Mining of this precious metal requires large volumes of water for production and removal of waste products. Most of this wastewater is discharged into river systems. Although the source of contamination with Pt in aquatic systems due to mining activities is known, little to no information is available about the impact of Pt on aquatic organisms. Additionally, other metals are released as byproducts of Pt mining, which might also be discharged into the environm

Trace metals in core sediments from a deep lake in eastern Turkey: Vertical concentration profiles, eco-environmental risks and possible sources.

The contents of 12 trace metals (Hg, As, Pb, Cd, Ni, Cr, Zn, Cu, Co, Mn, Al and Fe) in two sediment cores (Hz11-P02 and Hz11-P09) from the Lake Hazar, one of the deepest natural lakes in Turkey, were examined to evaluate vertical concentration profiles, possible sources, pollution status and eco-environmental risks of these metals. The highest concentrations of Cd and As were detected in the upper part (0-10 cm depths) of core Hz11-P02, while Hg concentration was at a maximum in the upper part of core Hz11-P09. The concentrations of other metals except Cr were the highest in the bottom layer (

Assessing anthropogenic pressure in the St. Lawrence River using traits of benthic macroinvertebrates.

This study aims to evaluate the anthropogenic pressure in the St. Lawrence River by assessing the relationships between chemical contamination of sediments and benthic community structure with the trait-based approach. Organic and inorganic contaminants as well as other sediment variables (sediment grain size, total organic carbon, nutrients, etc.) and benthic invertebrate assemblages were determined in 59 sites along the river. Biological and ecological traits of taxa were coded, taking into account regional climate and ecosystem conditions. The aims of this study were to (1) describe the rel

Nitrate reduction pathways in the presence of excess nitrogen in a shallow eutrophic estuary.

The eutrophication of estuaries results from increasing anthropogenic nutrient inputs to coastal waters. Ecosystem recovery from eutrophication is partly dependent on the ability of a system to assimilate or remove nutrients, and denitrification and dissimilatory nitrate reduction to ammonium (DNRA) are important pathways for nitrogen (N) removal or retention. We measured rates of denitrification and DNRA over an annual cycle at two stations in Weeks Bay, AL, a shallow microtidal estuary receiving freshwater from two rivers with agricultural watersheds and high N inputs. We hypothesized that r

Predicting distribution coefficients for antibiotics in a river water-sediment using quantitative models based on their spatiotemporal variations.

Antibiotics are widely used in humans and animals, but their presence in environmental matrices after use is of great concern. Distribution behavior of antibiotics in natural water-sediment systems is influenced by sediment properties, but how these properties, such as surface area, affect their distribution between water and sediment phases remains unclear. The concentrations of antibiotics also vary both spatially and temporally. In this study, a solid/liquid distribution coefficient Kd(pre) was proposed and evaluated in 12 quantitative predicting models based on aquatic field data compared

PNGM-1, a novel subclass B3 metallo-β-lactamase from a deep-sea sediment metagenome.

OBJECTIVES: In order to find antimicrobial resistance gene(s) pre-dating the use of antibiotics through metagenomics, functional screening of a metagenomic library from the deep-seep sediments of Edison Seamount (ca. 10000 years old) was performed. METHODS: Among 60 antimicrobial-resistant clones, a single clone with the highest minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) for ampicillin was selected. Sequence analysis revealed a new metallo-β-lactamase (MBL) gene, designated as blaPNGM-1. PNGM-1 retains a zinc ion-binding motif (H116XH118XD120H121, H196 and H263), conserved in subclass B3 MBLs. The role of antibiotics in mercury methylation in marine sediments.

The role of antibiotics commonly used in fish culture activities in methylmercury (MeHg) formation in mariculture sediments (MS) and in reference sediments (RS) was studied using simulation microcosms. MS and RS were split into three equal batches. Two batches were spiked with Hg(NO3)2 aqueous solution at levels of 2 and 8 mg kg-1 (dry weight basis) and the remainder served as a control batch. Tetracycline (TC) and oxytetracycline (OTC) (2.5 g and 10 g of each) were added to each treatment. Sediment THg concentration decreased during the culture period possibly due to complexation of Hg with t

Metal contamination in a riparian wetland: Distribution, fractionation and plant uptake.

Heavy metal pollution in aquatic system is of concern due its ecologic risk. In this study, we investigated the distribution, fractionation and plant uptake of heavy metals (As, Cd, Cr, Co, Cu, Ni, Pb and Zn) in a riparian wetland impacted by mining activities in Yunnan, southwest China. The results showed that excluding Cr, metal contents in sediment were higher than the background values, especially for As, which was 100-fold higher. While Cd showed high levels in the acid-soluble fraction with high availability, As, Cr, Cu, Ni and Pb mainly existed in the residual fraction with low availabi

Screening of Pesticide and Biocide Patterns As Risk Drivers in Sediments of Major European River Mouths: Ubiquitous or River Basin-Specific Contamination?

Pesticides and biocides (PaB) are ubiquitously present in aquatic ecosystems due to their widespread application and have been detected in rivers at concentrations that may cause distress to aquatic life. Many of these compounds accumulate in sediments acting as long-term source for aquatic ecosystems. However, data on sediment contamination with current-use PaB in Europe are scarce. Thus, in this study, we elucidated PaB patterns and associated risks in sediments of seven major European rivers focusing on their last stretch as an integrative sink of particles transported by these rivers. Partitioning of nanoparticle-originated dissolved silver in natural and artificial sediments.

Sediments are believed to be a major sink for silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) in the aquatic environment, but there is a lack of knowledge about the environmental effects and behavior of AgNPs in sediments. The release of highly toxic Ag+ through dissolution of AgNPs is one mechanism leading to toxic effects in sediments. We applied an ultrasound-assisted sequential extraction method to evaluate the dissolution of AgNPs and to study the partitioning of dissolved Ag in sediments. Silver was spiked into artificial and 2 natural sediments (Lake Höytiäinen sediment and Lake Kuorinka sediment) as silv

[Effect of Sediments on Bioaccumulation of Mercury in Fish Body in the Water-Level-Fluctuating Zone of the Three Gorges Reservoir Area].

Mercury (Hg) in the aquatic environment is easy to accumulate in fish. In order to study the effect of the sediments on Hg accumulation in fish in the water-level-fluctuation zone of the Three Gorges Reservoir, we conducted a 90-days simulated flooding experiment by using the sediments with different concentrations of Hg. Our study showed that the concentrations of the total mercury (THg) and methyl mercury (MeHg) in the overlying water increased after flooding, and the concentrations in the muscle of fish kept increasing in the period of experiment, the concentrations in the viscera and head

Trace metals partitioning between particulate and dissolved phases along a tropical mangrove estuary (Can Gio, Vietnam).

Mangroves can be considered as biogeochemical reactors along (sub)tropical coastlines, acting both as sinks or sources for trace metals depending on environmental factors. In this study, we characterized the role of a mangrove estuary, developing downstream a densely populated megacity (Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam), on the fate and partitioning of trace metals. Surface water and suspended particulate matter were collected at four sites along the estuarine salinity gradient during 24 h cycling in dry and rainy seasons. Salinity, pH, DO, TSS, POC, DOC, dissolved and particulate Fe, Mn, Cr, As, Cu,

Pesticide impact study in the peri-urban horticultural area of Gran La Plata, Argentina.

Vegetable production systems are characterized by intense pesticide use, yet the effects on the surrounding environment are largely unknown and need to be studied. Given this knowledge gap, the objective of this work is to determine the impact of horticulture on a representative watercourse by conducting an integrated study of the occurrence and concentration of pesticides in bottom sediments and their relation to lethal and sublethal effects on benthic fauna. Two sampling campaigns were conducted during seasons of low and high pesticide application in five sites along the Carnaval creek, loca

Aminorifamycins and Sporalactams Produced in Culture by a Micromonospora sp. Isolated from a Northeastern-Pacific Marine Sediment Are Potent Antibiotics.

The new ansa macrolide antibiotics 1 to 4 have been isolated from cultures of a Micromonospora sp. obtained from a marine sediment. Rifamycins 1 and 2 are the first natural ansa macrolides to have a 3-amino substituent. Sporalactams A (3) and B (4) are comprised of a heterocylic core 5 and a 14-membered ansa bridge that are both unprecedented. Sporalactam B (4) shows selective and potent inhibition of Mycobacterium tuberculosis.

Seasonal variation of methylmercury in sediment cores from the Tagus Estuary (Portugal).

Seasonal and spatial variations of dissolved and particulate methylmercury were evaluated for the first time in sediment cores from the Tagus Estuary. Results showed the highest MeHg concentrations in summer months indicating that the "seasonally" methylation process occurs not only at the topmost layers of the sediments but also in the deeper layers of the sediment column. The proportion of MeHg (up to 92%) in some of our pore water samples was higher than values reported in the literature for other estuaries suggesting that the sedimentary environment in the Tagus tends to favour Hg methylat

Sorption of paracetamol onto biomaterials.

Pharmaceutical residues released into the environment are posing more and more public health problems. It is worthwhile to study the retention of pharmaceuticals residues by adsorption on solid supports. Batch sorption experiments are intended to identify the adsorption isotherms of the pharmaceutically active ingredient on the biomaterials. The results obtained in this study have shown that the retention possibilities of these compounds by bio-adsorbents (clay and sand) are not significant. The negligible sorption for these media is explained by the low hydrophobicity of paracetamol (Log K(ow
