Septic arthritis of the temporomandibular joint is a rare pathology. There is no consensus in the literature regarding etiopathogenesis and treatment. Pain, swelling, trismus, and mandibular deviation are common. If diagnosis is delayed and appropriate treatment is not given, complications such as osteomyelitis, ankylosis, and systemic spread may develop. This article presents the case of an 85-year-old male patient with septic arthritis of the temporomandibular joint, including clinical, laboratory, and radiological features, accompanied by relevant literature. Since treatment was started ear

Frailty syndrome occurs in elderly individuals with declining muscle mass (sarcopenia), unintentional weight loss, decreasing physical strength and activity, exhaustion, and slow ambulation. It significantly increases morbidity and mortality with cardiovascular, renal disease and neurological disorders, osteoporosis and fractures, endocrine and immunological dysfunction and a variety of malignancies. It is increasing in incidence as the population ages. However, unfortunately as identification relies on clinical and not pathological evaluations, its contribution to a wide range of comorbiditie

INTRODUCTION: To address uncertainty regarding the cost-effectiveness of implementing geriatric assessment (GA) in oncology practice, we undertook a synthetic, model-based economic evaluation.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A decision-analytic model with embedded Markov chains was developed to simulate a cost-effectiveness analysis of implementing GA within standard oncological care compared to current practice. This was for patients aged 77 years (the mean age in included trials) receiving chemotherapy or surgery as first-line treatment. Assumptions were made about model parameters, based on availab

BACKGROUND: Frailty is the age-related decline contributing to adverse outcome vulnerability. This study assesses the modified 5-factor frailty index's (mFI-5) ability to predict geriatric cholecystectomy outcomes.
METHODS: Laparoscopic cholecystectomy patients ages ≥65 were identified from the American College of Surgeons' National Surgical Quality Improvement Program database (2018-2020). MFI-5 variables include hypertension, congestive heart failure, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, diabetes, and functional status. Groups were stratified according to the number of comorbidities: mFI

BACKGROUND: The benefits and risks of augmenting or switching antidepressants in older adults with treatment-resistant depression have not been extensively studied.
METHODS: We conducted a two-step, open-label trial involving adults 60 years of age or older with treatment-resistant depression. In step 1, patients were randomly assigned in a 1:1:1 ratio to augmentation of existing antidepressant medication with aripiprazole, augmentation with bupropion, or a switch from existing antidepressant medication to bupropion. Patients who did not benefit from or were ineligible for step 1 were randoml

The world's population is aging rapidly, and the epidemiological transition has led to increased mental disorders worldwide. Geriatric depression is masked by multiple comorbidities or the natural process of aging. Our study aims to estimate the prevalence of geriatric depression and find the risk factors associated with geriatric depression in rural Odisha. The study was a multistage cross-sectional study conducted in the Tangi block, district Khordha, Odisha, from August 2020 to September 2022, among 520 participants selected by probability proportional to size sampling. From the selected pa

IntroductionChronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) commonly affects older adults. However, few studies have examined the relationship between baseline geriatric domains and clinical outcomes in this population. Here, we aim to evaluate the use of a comprehensive geriatric assessment in older (>65 years) untreated patients with CLL to predict outcomes.Materials and methodsWe conducted a planned analysis of 369 patients with CLL age 65 or older treated in a phase 3 randomized trial of bendamustine plus rituximab versus ibrutinib plus rituximab versus ibrutinib alone (A041202). Patients underwent eva

Radical cystectomy is the gold standard for the treatment of muscle-invasive bladder cancer. Advanced age is only a relative criterion when selecting patients eligible for radical cystectomy, and to reduce post-operative complications, the management of an elderly patient requires a multidisciplinary approach. The role of the geriatrician is therefore essential, in collaboration with the urologist, to ensure appropriate follow-up. A series of preoperative screening tests should be used to identify frailer patients who are at high risk of developing complications, so that appropriate follow-up

INTRODUCTION: Spontaneous bowel perforation is associated with high morbidity and mortality. This entity remains understudied in the geriatric patient. We sought to use a national surgical sample to uncover independent predictors of mortality in elderly patients undergoing emergent operation for perforated bowel.
METHODS: Using the American College of Surgeons National Surgical Quality Improvement database, years 2007 to 2017, all geriatric patients (age ≥65 y) who underwent emergency surgery and who had a postoperative diagnosis of bowel perforation were included. Univariate and multivariabl

Orthogeriatric hip fractures have high morbidity and mortality rates. Modern management focuses on multidisciplinary collaboration for prompt surgical stabilization, early mobilization with multimodal pain control to avoid opioid consumption, and an enhanced recovery pathway. Despite these advances, postoperative complications and mortality rates remain higher than age-matched control subjects. The authors of this article represent the orthopaedic, anesthesia, and hospitalist medicine members of a multidisciplinary team at a single, Level 1 trauma center. Our goal was to provide an up-to-date

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to investigate the relationship between sarcopenia and frailty and examine factors associated with frailty among older patients with and without sarcopenia.
METHODS: This cross-sectional study was conducted on older inpatients and outpatients in Vietnam. Participants aged 60 years or older were consecutively enrolled in the study. Sarcopenia was defined using the Asian Working Group for Sarcopenia (AWGS) 2019 criteria. Fried's frailty phenotype was applied to define frailty. Logistic regression models with frailty as the dependent variable were applied.

Eosinophilic granulomatosis with polyangiitis (EGPA) is a rare form of systemic disease characterized by inflammation and necrotizing effects of the small and medium blood vessels. It is a vasculitis found in all age groups and both genders, although its etiology is unknown. The mean age at diagnosis is 40 years, consisting of an uncommon cause of vasculitis in people older than 65 years. It is the least common of the three antineutrophil cytoplasmic antibody (ANCA)-associated vasculitis (EGPA, granulomatosis with polyangiitis (GPA), and microscopic polyangiitis). The characteristic features o

Biological aging is the single most important risk factor for disease, disability, and ultimately death in geriatric dogs. The effects of aging in companion dogs also impose significant financial and psychological burdens on their human caregivers. The underlying physiologic processes of canine aging may be occult, or early signs of aging may be ignored because of the misconception that biological aging is natural and therefore inevitable. The ability to detect, quantify, and mitigate the deleterious processes of canine aging would greatly enhance veterinary preventative medicine and animal we
