Primary angle-closure glaucoma (PACG) is a common form of glaucoma in the Far East. Its defining feature is iridocorneal angle closure. In addition to PACG, indications of angle closure are included in the diagnostic criteria of related conditions primary angle-closure suspect (PACS) and primary angle closure (PAC). The occurrence of malignant glaucoma several years after cataract surgery is a very rare delayed complication. An increasing myopic shift can be an early hint for the formation. A surgical intervention is often inevitable; however, intraocular pressure can also be successfully managed with conservative treatment as in the case described. Therefore, treatment should be adapted to the situation and individually decided how invasive the treatment must be and whether a vitrectomy is absolutely necessary.

There are conflicting reports on the value of cyclocryotherapy in the management of glaucoma. This retrospective study was carried out to assess the efficacy and complication rate of this procedure. The case notes of all patients undergoing cyclocryotherapy at a single centre over a 10-year period were reviewed. Case records were available for 68 eyes of 64 people. Primary angle closure glaucoma is a major cause of visual morbidity in Asia, which hosts 80% of the worldwide cases. In India, primary angle closure glaucoma (PACG) comprises almost 50% of adult glaucomas in hospital setting with its asymptomatic presentation predominating at 80%. On the basis of archival records of 1463 patients treated in the period 1964-1986 the author isolated the cases of primary open angle glaucoma (2248 eyes) and closed angle glaucoma (333 eyes). The influence of the intraocular pressure on the grade of damage done to the nervous fibres and manifesting itself by pathological changes of the optic disc and visual field was analyzed. It was discovered that this influence was statistically significant especially in cases of closed angle glaucoma.

PURPOSE: To determine the prevalence of glaucoma in a population of patients with multibacillary Hansen disease who had completed treatment.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: The authors examined 386 of 446 patients with treated multibacillary Hansen disease residing in a geographically limited area.
