A clinical case of a female patient with a black spot on the palm of her left hand is presented. The infection was due to a black fungus identified as Hortaea werneckii, the aetiological agent of tinea nigra palmaris. This infection can be easily diagnosed and it is important to establish the differential diagnosis from other skin pathologies. Normally, the treatment has a successful outcome. In this case, the patient was treated with econazole locally applied during one month, with complete remission of the lesions. In conclusion, the early diagnosis of this disease is very important since th

A 48-year-old white woman presented with the abrupt onset of an asymptomatic but cosmetically distressing eruption on the palm. Physical examination disclosed a 2.5 x 2.0-cm macular brown patch on the central left palm (Figure 1). Potassium hydroxide examination revealed brown-pigmented, septate, branching filamentous hyphae. Clinical and microscopic findings were classic for tinea nigra palmaris. Medical, family, and social history were all unremarkable. The patient applied ciclopirox olamine gel, 0.77% b.i.d. for 3 days. Following this brief therapeutic intervention, the lesion resolved comp

"Mechanic's hands" are a characteristic cutaneous sign of idiopathic inflammatory myositis. We describe the case of a 61-year-old male patient who was diagnosed with idiopathic polymyositis and non-specific interstitial lung disease in 1999, and three years later developed scaly, fissured hyperkeratotic lesions on the lateral and palmar surfaces of the first three fingers of both hands, with little pruritus. The presence of the anti-Jo-1 antisynthetase antibody in the patient's serum, the finding of skin lesions characteristic of "mechanic's hands" and the patient's other systemic clinical man

Lateral longitudinal nail biopsy is the gold standard of incisional nail biopsies. It can be obtained under local anaesthetic and requires normal biopsy instruments. Preoperative planning with the patient is important in order that they have realistic expectations of the therapeutic outcome and understand how to care for the wound in the postoperative period.

PURPOSE: This study aimed to determine indices to diagnose and predict eosinophilic chronic rhinosinusitis (ECRS) during the initial clinic visit.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed 116 patients with chronic rhinosinusitis who underwent endoscopic sinus surgery and were classified according to the postoperative pathological diagnosis. General data and various clinical indicators were analyzed, and indicators with statistically significant differences between groups were further incorporated into a multivariate logistic regression to establish a comprehensive prediction model. Contact dermatitis to cooling lubricants is commonly encountered in occupational dermatology, but it rarely induces pigmentary skin changes. It is sometimes difficult to differentiate between toxic leukoderma and postinflammatory hypopigmentation when examining a depigmentation. A differential diagnosis is described in the case of a 31-year-old metal worker, spending most of his time on a computer-numerically controlled machine, who presented with cumulative irritant hand dermatitis and secondary hypopigmentation. Patch tests gave negative reactions to the European standard series, the disinfe

Hand eczema is a common disorder of healthcare providers. The pattern of eczema can help to distinguish endogenous (dyshidrosis, atopy) causes from exogenous (contact irritant and allergic dermatitis) and the common differential diagnoses (psoriasis, fungus infections). Appropriate strength topical steroids, moisturizers, antibacterials, and systemic agents are all used to treat hand eczema depending on the type of eczema and its severity. Patients with contact allergic eczema should be assessed for possible latex allergy.

The irritant and allergenic properties of the most important flower bulbs are described, as well as the clinical symptoms they cause. The tulip contains the allergen tulipalin A; sensitization and irritation are responsible for the development of tulip fingers. The same clinical picture can be caused by Alliums like the onion and garlic. The narcissus causes lily rash, a dermatitis rarely caused by sensitization. The hyacinth evokes itching in practically everyone: an irritant reaction caused by calcium oxalate crystals. Patch testing is complicated as the allergens are not all identified.

Pachydermodactyly is a benign condition characterized by symmetrical, painless, diffuse swelling of the skin on the lateral aspects of the proximal interphalangeal joints of the fingers. Histopathological examination shows epidermal hyperplasia, an increase of dermal collagen bundles and a slightly increased number of fibroblasts. We report three adolescent males with pachydermodactyly. We also review 20 published cases, and discuss the differential diagnosis, clearly distinguishing pachydermodactyly from 'true' and 'false' knuckle pads.

Contact urticaria has been recognized since the 19th century, but rubber contact urticaria was not described until 1979. This sensitivity to rubber gloves, which often affects health care and cleaning workers, is now considered an occupationally related disease that must be considered in the diagnosis of contact urticaria.
