The impact of helmet use on neurosurgical care and outcomes after pediatric all-terrain vehicle and dirt bike crashes: a 10-year single-center experience.

OBJECTIVE: All-terrain vehicle (ATV) and dirt bike crashes frequently result in traumatic brain injury. The authors performed a retrospective study to evaluate the role of helmets in the neurosurgical outcomes of pediatric patients involved in ATV and dirt bike crashes who were treated at their institution during the last decade. METHODS: The authors analyzed data on all pediatric patients involved in ATV or dirt bike crashes who were evaluated at a single regional level I pediatric trauma center between 2010 and 2019. Patients were excluded if the crash occurred in a competition (n = 70) or

Impact of wearing a helmet on the risk of hospitalization and intracranial haemorrhage after a sports injury.

BACKGROUND: Despite their reported protective effect against the occurrence of head injuries, helmets are still used inconsistently in sports in which they are optional. We aimed to assess the impact of helmet use on the risk of hospitalization and intracranial haemorrhage for trauma occurring during sport activities. METHODS: Retrospective cohort of all patients who presented themselves, over an 18-month period, at the emergency department of a tertiary trauma centre for an injury sustained in a sport or leisure activity where the use of a helmet is optional. Impact of helmet use was assesse

Rural Kentucky High School Students' Exposure to All-Terrain Vehicle Riding and Injuries.

From 1982 to 2007, Kentucky had 459 deaths related to all-terrain vehicles (ATVs), fifth highest among US states. By 2012, Kentucky ranked fourth highest, with 578 ATV-related deaths. Following the sentinel event of an ATV-related traumatic brain injury to an unhelmeted high school student, the authors developed a 19-item survey that collected data regarding rural Kentucky high school students' years of ATV driving, second-rider frequency, typical duration of riding events, estimated weekly number of riding events, and frequency of helmet use. Of the 159 students involved, males scored signifi

Implementation of an all-ages mandatory helmet policy for ice skating.

Ice skaters sustain a significant number of head injuries each winter. We are the first to implement an all-ages helmet policy at a university-based Canadian arena. We report our experience from a cross-sectional observational study as well as the policy's consequences on helmet use and skating participation. Educational programming was provided prior to policy implementation. Observations of helmet use, falls and skater demographics were conducted prior to education/implementation and after policy implementation. The number of skaters observed was essentially unchanged by the policy; 361 skat

Comparison of invasive and noninvasive positive pressure ventilation delivered by means of a helmet for weaning of patients from mechanical ventilation.

PURPOSE: The effectiveness of noninvasive positive pressure ventilation delivered by helmet (H-NPPV) as a weaning approach in patients with acute respiratory failure is unclear. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We randomly and evenly assigned 64 patients intubated for acute respiratory failure to conventional weaning with invasive mechanical ventilation (IMV) or H-NPPV. The primary end point was a reduction in IMV duration by 6 days between the 2 groups. Secondary end points were the occurrence of ventilator-associated pneumonia and major complications, duration of mechanical ventilation and weaning, in

A mixed logit analysis of two-vehicle crash severities involving a motorcycle.

Using motorcycle crash data for Iowa from 2001 to 2008, this paper estimates a mixed logit model to investigate the factors that affect crash severity outcomes in a collision between a motorcycle and another vehicle. These include crash-specific factors (such as manner of collision, motorcycle rider and non-motorcycle driver and vehicle actions), roadway and environmental conditions, location and time, motorcycle rider and non-motorcycle driver and vehicle attributes. The methodological approach allows the parameters to vary across observations as opposed to a single parameter representing all

Postoperative nursing care of the endoscopic nonsyndromic craniosynostosis surgery patient.

Craniosynostosis affects 1 in 2,100 children. The current methods for the treatment of craniosynostosis at Rady Children's Hospital, San Diego, are open cranial vault remodeling and the minimally invasive endoscopic technique. The primary advantages of the minimally invasive endoscopic technique are decreased operative time, blood loss, swelling, incision size, and inpatient hospital stay. Postoperative helmet therapy is a necessary part of the treatment for the refinement of the surgical result. The purpose of this article is to present current inpatient and outpatient nursing management cons

Evolution of a successful community bicycle helmet campaign.

BACKGROUND: Bicycling injuries claim more than 900 lives each year in the United States, and the major cause of deaths is head injuries. Bicycle helmets can prevent head and brain injuries, yet helmet use rate remains low. Helmets are expensive, and their cost can be prohibitive. This study asks the question, "If bicycle helmets are made affordable, will they be worn?" METHODS: A multifaceted bicycle helmet campaign was begun in Grand Junction, Colorado, population 76,000, in 1992 and was evaluated after its first 2 years. The educational component involved presentations in local schools and
