Occupational therapists' use of digital technologies to support people with disabilities in engaging in occupation: a scoping review protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Digital tools such as virtual reality, mobile applications and digital devices are being implemented across various healthcare practice settings. Engagement in occupations is central to occupational therapy, supporting health and quality of life. Occupational therapists support people with disabilities to participate in occupations by enhancing their abilities or adapting tasks and environments. However, literature rarely specifies how digital technologies are used by occupational therapists, with whom they are implemented, when and where they are delivered, what occupations are

Autoxidation of glycols used in inhalable daily products: implications for the use of artificial fogs and e-cigarettes.

The use of glycols is seen in various industries and occupations. In the past few decades, the health implications of inhalable glycols have gained public attention. Inhalable glycols may cause adverse health effects, especially for workers in occupations receiving frequent exposure and consumers of glycol-based daily products. Our previous work highlighted the rapid accumulation of formaldehyde and glycolaldehyde in fog juice, thus proposing the occurrence of glycol autoxidation. However, the fundamentals of glycol autoxidation remained unclear and unexplored. Our goal is to investigate the a

Occupational hazards in female ballet dancers. Advocate for a forgotten population.

1. Personal, economical, psychological, and physical factors increase a ballet dancer's stress, which can result in a higher risk for injuries. 2. Ballet dancers experience injuries to the foot, ankle, knee, hip, or back. The constant fear of injuries is universal among dancers because injuries can lead to permanent disability and the end of their ballet career. 3. Although early treatment of injuries is critical, there are multiple barriers to receiving treatment. Some of the barriers include misunderstanding from the health care community, cost of treatment, time constraints, fear of unemplo

Occupational therapy practice: focusing on occupational performance.

Changes in the health system require occupational therapy practitioners to focus their concerns on the long-term health needs of people and to help them develop healthy behaviors not only to improve their health, but also to minimize the health care costs associated with dysfunction. Occupational therapy practitioners must initiate efforts in the community to integrate a range of services that promote, protect, and improve the health of the public. This article shares the experiences of Canadian occupational therapy practitioners, who were challenged by their government nearly 15 years ago to

The vitamin D status among Tibetans.

UVB from the sun and intake from food are the only human sources of vitamin D. Tibet is a unique region for comparisons of these sources: (1) it lies at a low latitude and at a high altitude and has very large annual fluences of UVB; (2) the traditional Tibetan food is poor in vitamin D. Blood samples were taken from 63 persons of different age, with different occupations and staying at different places. UVB doses at these places were measured. The samples were analyzed by a standard radioimmune assay for determination of the serum concentration of 25 hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D). The main findi

Using Public Deliberation to Set Priorities: The Case of COVID-19 Vaccine Access in New York City.

CONTEXT: The COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in a record number of deaths in the United States and tremendous economic and personal strain. During 2020, in anticipation of a vaccine to slow the spread of disease, local and state governments in the United States developed plans for vaccine prioritization, given a limited initial supply. Recognizing the challenges inherent in prioritization, the New York City (NYC) health department sought guidance from members of the public about the fairest approach to early-stage vaccine distribution. OBJECTIVE: To solicit recommendations from NYC residents o

Deep learning for occupation recognition and knowledge discovery in rheumatology clinical notes.

Occupational data is a crucial social determinant of health, influencing diagnostic accuracy, treatment strategies, and policy-making in healthcare. However, its inclusion in electronic health records (EHR) is often relegated to unstructured fields. This study aims to assess the collection and use of occupation-related data in rheumatology clinical narratives, describe factors influencing its collection, and analyze its association with patient diagnoses. We employed a pre-trained Spanish language model fine-tuned with biomedical texts to identify occupation mentions in the EHR of 35,586 rheum

Occupational tree felling fatalities: 2010-2020.

BACKGROUND: Logging and landscape work are among the most hazardous occupations, and one of the most dangerous tasks in these occupations is tree felling. While much research has been conducted to examine fatalities from logging and landscape services, there is a dearth of research looking specifically at tree felling. There is a need to focus on hazards associated with tree felling activities so that proactive prevention strategies can be developed. METHODS: An Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) database was used to identify occupational tree-felling fatalities in the Unite

[Lung ultrasound promising method for assessing acute dyspnea and monitoring decompensated heart failure].

OBJECTIVES: The constant use of agrochemicals in avocado plantations, because of their susceptibility to pests and diseases, continuously exposes those who work or reside near these orchards to health risks. The purpose of this study was to investigate the association between childhood leukemia cases in Michoacán, paternal occupational exposure to agrochemicals, and environmental exposure due to residential proximity. METHODS: A retrospective observational cohort study was performed. We analyzed 430 cases of leukemia in children under 18 years of age diagnosed between 2010-2023. Logistic regr

A meta-analysis on the association between bladder cancer and occupation.

To date, many epidemiological studies have been conducted to examine the association between occupation and bladder cancer incidence. However, results from these studies often have been inconsistent, and significant associations have rarely been found, possibly owing to the lack of adequate statistical power in these studies. This meta-analysis summarizes the relevant literature regarding occupation and bladder cancer incidence to increase the statistical power to detect associations. The Medline and Embase databases were searched to retrieve epidemiological studies published up until May 2008

Do nurses have a different physical health profile? A systematic review of experimental and observational studies on nurses' physical health.

AIM: To review the evidence on nurses' health systematically. BACKGROUND: Nurses are one of the most important resources of a health system. They are subjected to biological, socio-economic, cultural and health system factors that determine their health. Although mental and physical health problems seem to prevail among nurses, literature is often contradictory. The literature on health styles, health behaviours and self perceived health of nurses is also unclear. DESIGN: Systematic review of experimental and observational studies on nurses' health. METHODS: Forty-three databases searched.
