Auditory brain stem response wave V latency-intensity function and three audiologic measures of cochlear function.

The purpose of this study was to compare the sensitivity of the ABR wave V latency-intensity (L-I) function to that of Alternate Binaural Loudness Balance, Loudness Discomfort Level, and Acoustic Reflex Threshold tests in identifying sensory hearing losses. Five audiometric groups were tested by each procedure. The groups included subjects with normal hearing, and with conductive, high-frequency sensory, flat sensory, and retrocochlear hearing losses. The ability of each test to separate sensory from retrocochlear impairments was investigated. A positive discriminator for cochlear impairments

Hearing Loss in Bacterial Meningitis Revisited-Evolution and Recovery.

BACKGROUND: Hearing loss and deafness are well-known sequelae from bacterial meningitis (ABM) and may result in social dysfunction and learning difficulties. Yet, the timely development of hearing loss and restitution is poorly studied, especially among adults. Hearing loss was revisited using otoacoustic emissions (OAEs) to determine the occurrence, magnitude, and development of hearing loss among adults with ABM. METHODS: Distortion product OAEs were measured in patients with ABM the day of admission and days 2, 3, 5-7, and 10-14 and at follow-up 30-60 days after discharge. Frequencies were

Losartan prevents tumor-induced hearing loss and augments radiation efficacy in NF2 schwannoma rodent models.

Hearing loss is one of the most common symptoms of neurofibromatosis type 2 (NF2) caused by vestibular schwannomas (VSs). Fibrosis in the VS tumor microenvironment (TME) is associated with hearing loss in patients with NF2. We hypothesized that reducing the fibrosis using losartan, an FDA-approved antihypertensive drug that blocks fibrotic and inflammatory signaling, could improve hearing. Using NF2 mouse models, we found that losartan treatment normalized the TME by (i) reducing neuroinflammatory IL-6/STAT3 signaling and preventing hearing loss, (ii) normalizing tumor vasculature and alleviat

[Hearing capacity and speech production in 417 children with facial cleft abnormalities].

Children with cleft palates often suffer from chronic conductive hearing losses, delayed language acquisition and speech disorders. This study presents results of speech and language outcomes in relation to hearing function and types of palatal malformations found. 417 children with cleft palates were examined during followup evaluations that extended over several years. Disorders were studied as they affected the ears, nose and throat, audiometry and speech and language pathology. Children with isolated cleft lips were excluded. Among the total group, 8% had normal speech and language develop

Effect of middle ear effusion on the brain-stem auditory evoked response of Cavalier King Charles Spaniels.

Brain-stem auditory evoked responses (BAER) were assessed in 23 Cavalier King Charles Spaniels with and without middle ear effusion at sound intensities ranging from 10 to 100 dB nHL. Significant differences were found between the median BAER threshold for ears where effusions were present (60 dB nHL), compared to those without (30 dB nHL) (P=0.001). The slopes of latency-intensity functions from both groups did not differ, but the y-axis intercept when the x value was zero was greater in dogs with effusions (P=0.009), consistent with conductive hearing loss. Analysis of latency-intensity func

Hearing loss and cognitive decline in older adults.

BACKGROUND Whether hearing loss is independently associated with accelerated cognitive decline in older adults is unknown. METHODS We studied 1984 older adults (mean age, 77.4 years) enrolled in the Health ABC Study, a prospective observational study begun in 1997-1998. Our baseline cohort consisted of participants without prevalent cognitive impairment (Modified Mini-Mental State Examination [3MS] score, ≥80) who underwent audiometric testing in year 5. Participants were followed up for 6 years. Hearing was defined at baseline using a pure-tone average of thresholds at 0.5 to 4 kHz in the bet

An articulation index based procedure for predicting the speech recognition performance of hearing-impaired individuals.

An articulation index calculation procedure developed for use with individual normal-hearing listeners [C. Pavlovic and G. Studebaker, J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 75, 1606-1612 (1984)] was modified to account for the deterioration in suprathreshold speech processing produced by sensorineural hearing impairment. Data from four normal-hearing and four hearing-impaired subjects were used to relate the loss in hearing sensitivity to the deterioration in speech processing in quiet and in noise. The new procedure only requires hearing threshold measurements and consists of the following two modifications of

Evaluation of Extended-Wear Hearing Aids as a Solution for Intermittently Noise-Exposed Listeners With Hearing Loss.

OBJECTIVES: Many individuals with noise-related hearing loss continue working in environments where they are periodically exposed to high levels of noise, which increases their risk for further hearing loss. These individuals often must remove their hearing aids in operational environments because of incompatibility with the mandated personal protective equipment, thus reducing situational awareness. Extended-wear hearing aids might provide a solution for these individuals because they can be worn for weeks or months at a time, protect users from high-level noise exposures, and are compatible

Examination of the relationship among hearing impairment, linguistic communication, mood, and social engagement of residents in complex continuing-care facilities.

UNLABELLED: Earlier evidence was not conclusive about whether hearing loss is associated with mood (i.e., depressive symptoms and anhedonia) and social engagement (i.e., reduced psychosocial involvement and reduced activity levels) in elderly residents living in complex continuing-care facilities. If hearing impairment results in poor mood and lower levels of social engagement, then remedying hearing impairment might result in a higher quality of life. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to determine if functional hearing impairment in continuing-care residents is associated with mood and

The Impact of Hearing Loss and Hearing Aid Usage on the Visuospatial Abilities of Older Adults in a Cohort of Combined Hearing and Cognitive Impairment.

INTRODUCTION: It has been proposed that hearing loss may result in improved visuospatial abilities. The evidence for this assertion is inconsistent, and limited to studies in congenitally deaf children, despite older adults with age-related hearing loss constituting the vast majority of the hearing impaired population. We assessed visuospatial (visuoconstruction and visuospatial memory) ability in older adult hearing aid users with and without clinically significant cognitive impairment. The primary aim of the study was to determine the effect of hearing loss on visuospatial abilities. METHOD

Identification of a novel isoform of Slc26a4 by single-cell RNA-sequencing of pendrin-expressing cells in the cochlea.

Pathogenic variation of SLC26A4 gene causes both Pendred syndrome (PDS) and non-syndromic enlarged vestibular aqueduct (NSEVA/DFNB4), two autosomal recessive disorders. The former accounts for approximately 6% of human genetic hearing loss, making it the second most common form of syndromic deafness after Usher syndrome, while the latter is the most common radiological malformation associated with childhood sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL). Here, we used short- and long-read single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq) of pendrin-expressing cells in the murine cochlea to identify a novel short isof

The use of diagnostic testing in asymmetric sensorineural hearing loss.

The etiology of an asymmetric sensorineural hearing loss can often be difficult to determine. Because a wide variety of pathologic processes may be responsible for the hearing loss, numerous diagnostic tests are usually used in the initial evaluation, including pure-tone audiometry, acoustic reflex testing, imaging, serologic testing, and auditory brainstem response testing. The diagnostic evaluations of 225 consecutive cases of asymmetric sensorineural hearing loss are reviewed. A cochlear site-of-lesion was demonstrated in the majority (194) of patients. Because all retrocochlear lesions (31

Epigenetic Age Acceleration and Hearing Function in US Older Adults.

OBJECTIVES: Hearing loss is a prevalent condition in older adults. Epigenetic age acceleration has emerged as a potential biomarker for age-related diseases; however, there is limited evidence of the link between epigenetic age acceleration and hearing loss in older adults or how it varies by sex. This study is to investigate (1) the association between epigenetic age acceleration and hearing function and (2) sex differences in this association. DESIGN: Data from the Health and Retirement Study, a large, nationally representative sample of adults aged 50 yrs and older, were analyzed. The stud

The Mitochondrial tRNAHis G12192A Mutation May Modulate the Clinical Expression of Deafness-Associated tRNAThr G15927A Mutation in a Chinese Pedigree.

BACKGROUND: Mutations in mitochondrial tRNA (mt-tRNA) genes have been found to be associated with both syndromic and non-syndromic hearing impairment. However, the pathophysiology underlying mt-tRNA mutations in clinical expression of hearing loss remains poorly understood. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to explore the potential association between mttRNA mutations and hearing loss. METHODS AND RESULTS: We reported here the molecular features of a pedigree with maternally transmitted non-syndromic hearing loss. Among 12 matrilineal relatives, five of them suffered variable degree of he
