Polyunsaturated fatty acids and parasite control: towards sustainable anthelmintic strategies within a One Health framework.

Parasitic helminths are a major constraint on livestock production worldwide, with significant implications for food security and animal and human health. As reliance on conventional anthelmintic drugs becomes increasingly unsustainable due to widespread anthelmintic resistance, chemical residues, and environmental concerns, there is an urgent need for innovative, biologically derived alternatives such as polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs). This review evaluates PUFAs as biologically derived agents that could complement or partially replace conventional dewormers. We integrate molecular, cell

Occurrence of Corynosoma cystacanths in commercially distributed marine fish within and outside Hokkaido, Japan.

Acanthocephalans of the genus Corynosoma infect pinnipeds as definitive hosts, using amphipods and decapods as intermediate hosts and various marine fishes as paratenic hosts. Human infection is associated with the consumption of raw marine fishes from Hokkaido, Japan. Widespread distribution of Hokkaido-sourced marine fishes to the greater Tokyo metropolitan area raises concerns about exposure outside Hokkaido. However, data on the prevalence of Corynosoma cystacanths in marine fish marketed in this region remain limited. A total of 473 individuals (24 species) from Hokkaido and 52 individual

From the laboratory to the clinic: advancing helminthic therapy for type 2 diabetes.

The interaction of helminth infections with type 2 diabetes (T2D) has been a major area of research in the past few years. This paper, therefore, focuses on the systematic review of the effects of helminthic infections on metabolism and immune regulation related to T2D, with mechanisms through which both direct and indirect effects are mediated. Specifically, the possible therapeutic role of helminths in T2D management, probably mediated through the modulation of host metabolic pathways and immune responses, is of special interest. This paper discusses the current possibilities for translating

The role of cockroaches as mechanical carriers of helminth infections: a systematic review and meta-analysis of environmental and climatic impacts on public health.

This study investigates the global prevalence of helminthic parasites in contaminated cockroaches, with a particular focus on identifying patterns based on climatic variable, geographic location, sample sources, detection methods, and cockroach species. From 2,884 articles, 39 articles had the eligibility to be included in the current study. The analysis revealed that the highest prevalence was found in household samples (0.399, 95% CI: 0.252-0.556). Specific species, such as Blatta orientalis, showed an exceptionally high prevalence of 0.885 (95% CI: 0.822 - 0.928). Regionally, Cameroon had t

Dampened inflammation and reduced risk of osteoarthritis among non-industrialized societies.

OBJECTIVES: Anthropological research suggests that people in non-industrialized societies (hunter-gatherers, subsistence farmers, pastoralists) are at lower risk of osteoarthritis than people in industrialized societies. Here, we propose that this may be due to people in non-industrialized societies having dampened inflammatory activity, a key factor in osteoarthritis pathogenesis. DESIGN: This narrative review focuses on evidence that four environmental variables common among non-industrialized societies contribute to dampening inflammatory activity and thus potentially lowering OA risk: low

Immunological role of IL-25 on gut-dwelling helminths.

Interleukin-25 (IL-25) is a crucial cytokine in coordinating type 2 immunity against gut-dwelling helminths. IL-25 is produced by a variety of cells, including epithelial and immune cells, and primarily stimulates Th2-type immune responses characterized by the release of IL-13, IL-5, and IL-4, which play a vital role in eosinophilia induction, goblet cell hyperplasia, and IgE synthesis. This review critically examines IL-25's role in maintaining intestinal barrier integrity and modulating regulatory immune responses. This review addresses how IL-25 integrates signals from the epithelial interf

A Review of Radiographic and Computed Tomographic Features of Helminth and Arthropod Parasitic Diseases in Dogs.

Parasites are a major cause of disease in dogs globally; some are well recognized in the veterinary community, whereas others are less well known. This review summarizes and discusses radiological and computed tomographic (CT) findings of 18 helminth and arthropod parasitic diseases in dogs. Each section begins with a summary of the parasites' distribution, life cycle, and clinical manifestations. The review finds that the imaging features of some parasitic diseases are well described in numerous studies, whereas others are found only in case reports. Findings ranged from pathognomonic to nons

Recruitment and Maintenance of CX3CR1+CD4+ T Cells during Helminth Infection.

Distinct subsets of T lymphocytes express CX3CR1 under inflammatory conditions, but little is known about CX3CR1+CD4+ T cells during type 2 inflammation in helminth infections. In this study, we used a fate-mapping mouse model to characterize CX3CR1+CD4+ T cells during both acute Nippostrongylus brasiliensis and chronic Schistosoma mansoni murine models of helminth infections, revealing CX3CR1+CD4+ T cells to be an activated tissue-homing subset with varying capacity for cytokine production. Tracking these cells over time revealed that maintenance of CX3CR1 itself along with a TH2 phenotype co

The invasive acanthocephalan parasite Pachysentis canicola is associated with a declining endemic island fox population on San Miguel Island.

In the late 1990s, the San Miguel Island fox (Urocyon littoralis littoralis) faced near-extinction. Fourteen of the 15 remaining foxes were placed into an island-based captive breeding program used to repopulate the island. Although the fox population in San Miguel reached pre-decline numbers by 2010, a second decline started around 2014, coincidental with a newly observed acanthocephalan parasite. To identify this introduced acanthocephalan species and determine the pathologic consequences of its infection on the health of foxes, we used an extensive record of island fox necropsies and associ

Worming into infancy: Exploring helminth-microbiome interactions in early life.

There is rapidly growing awareness of microbiome assembly and function in early-life gut health. Although many factors, such as antibiotic use and highly processed diets, impinge on this process, most research has focused on people residing in high-income countries. However, much of the world's population lives in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), where, in addition to erratic antibiotic use and suboptimal diets, these groups experience unique challenges. Indeed, many children in LMICs are infected with intestinal helminths. Although helminth infections are strongly associated with div

A molecular and ecological study of Macracanthorhynchus ingens (von Linstow, 1879) (Acanthocephala: Archiacanthocephala), in its paratenic and definitive hosts in southeastern Mexico and the Eastern USA.

The acanthocephalan Macracanthorhynchus ingens (von Linstow 1879) (Acanthocephala: Archiacanthocephala) is a parasite that infects the gut of carnivores (racoons, coyotes, wolves, foxes, badgers, skunks, opossum, mink and bears) as an adult and the body cavity of lizards, snakes, and frogs as a cystacanth in the Americas. In this study, adults and cystacanths of M. ingens from southeastern Mexico and southern Florida, USA, were identified morphologically by having a cylindrical proboscis armed with 6 rows of hooks each with 6 hooks. Hologenophores were used to sequence the small (SSU) and larg

Review of the concept of Profilicollis Meyer, 1931 with a description of Profilicollis rancoensis n. sp. (Acanthocephala: Polymorphidae) from the freshwater crab, Aegla abtao Schmitt, 1942 (Decapoda: Anomura) in Chile, with a key to congeneric species.

Profilicollis rancoensis n. sp. is the tenth species of Profilicollis Meyer, 1931 which includes 9 other species mostly known from marine decapod crabs and shore birds. Cystacanths of P. rancoensis are described from the dominant freshwater crab Aegla abtao in Ranco Lake, Chile and are morphologically distinguished from cystacanths of the 9 other species based on a combination of 4 characters. These are body size, number of proboscis hook rows, number of hooks per row, and length of the largest anterior 2-4 hooks. Male and female cystacanths of P. rancoensis are 2.10-3.33 mm long having an ovo

Soil-transmitted helminths: A critical review of the impact of co-infections and implications for control and elimination.

Researchers have raised the possibility that soil-transmitted helminth (STH) infections might modify the host's immune response against other systemic infections. STH infections can alter the immune response towards type 2 immunity that could then affect the likelihood and severity of other illnesses. However, the importance of co-infections is not completely understood, and the impact and direction of their effects vary considerably by infection. This review synthesizes evidence regarding the relevance of STH co-infections, the potential mechanisms that explain their effects, and how they mig

Defining optimal implementation packages for delivering community-wide mass drug administration for soil-transmitted helminths with high coverage.

BACKGROUND: Recent evidence suggests that community-wide mass drug administration (MDA) may interrupt the transmission of soil-transmitted helminths (STH), a group of intestinal worms that infect 1.5 billion individuals globally. Although current operational guidelines provide best practices for effective MDA delivery, they do not describe which activities are most essential for achieving high coverage or how they work together to produce effective intervention delivery. We aimed to identify the various packages of influential intervention delivery activities that result in high coverage of co
