OBJECTIVE: To explore the clinical effect of total hip arthroplasty (THA) in the treatment of old central dislocation of the hip joint.
METHODS: Between January 2010 and June 2014, 21 patients (21 hips) with old central dislocation of the hip joint underwent THA and autologous bone graft for acetabulum reconstruction. This study examined the clinical outcome of 220 hips in 196 Asian patients who underwent primary total hip arthroplasty (THA) for treatment of developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) using a modified S-ROM modular (S-ROM-A) stem designed for Asians, after 2-5 years (mean, 3.3 years) of follow-up. Propionibacterium avidum is a Gram-positive, nonsporulating, facultative anaerobe that has a low level of virulence and is rarely pathogenic. This ubiquitous inhabitant of the sebaceous glands and hair follicles can cause acne vulgaris. We performed total hip arthroplasties in 11 women with Crowe's group IV completely dislocated hips, with a mean age at surgery of 59.6 years and a mean follow-up of 65 months. In all cases, femoral shortening was achieved using step-cut osteotomy. All acetabular cups were placed in their anatomical locations. We describe a technique of 'cross-hip distraction' to reduce a dislocated hip with subsequent reconstruction of the joint for septic arthritis with extensive femoral osteomyelitis. INTRODUCTION: Biomechanical analysis is an important tool that could improve the treatment of a diseased hip. However, it is still unclear how the biomechanical status affects the clinical outcome of a certain disease. In this work we studied the long-term effect of contact hip stress on the clinical outcome of hips that were operated on by various intertrochanteric osteotomies due to avascular necrosis of the femoral head.
