Organisational factors associated with hospital costs and patient mortality in the 365 days following hip fracture in England and Wales (REDUCE): a record-linkage cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Hip fracture care delivery varies between hospitals, which might explain variations in patient outcomes and health costs. The aim of this study was to identify hospital-level organisational factors associated with long-term patient outcomes and costs after hip fracture. METHODS: REDUCE was a record-linkage cohort study in which national databases for all patients aged 60 years and older who sustained a hip fracture in England and Wales were linked with hospital metrics from 18 organisational data sources. Multilevel models identified organisational factors associated with the case

Early-onset malignant solid tumours in young adult South Africans - an audit based on histopathological records of patients seen at the three academic hospitals in Johannesburg.

BACKGROUND: Malignant tumours in adolescents and young adults (AYA) are referred to as early-onset cancers. This study analysed the histopathological profile of malignant solid tumours in AYA. METHODS: Records of patients who had confirmed malignant solid tumours were retrieved. Data collected included the treating hospital, year of presentation, age and histological diagnosis. The commonly diagnosed malignant tumours in AYA were compared with tumours in older adults. A p-value below 0.05 was considered significant. RESULTS: A total of 61 828 records were retrieved and 29 974 were excluded.

Using clinical decision support through the electronic medical record to increase prescribing of high-dose parenteral thiamine in hospitalized patients with alcohol use disorder.

BACKGROUND: Patients with alcohol use disorder (AUD) are at an increased risk of developing Wernicke's encephalopathy (WE), a devastating and difficult diagnosis caused by thiamine deficiency. Even as AUD is present in up to 25% of hospitalized patients on medical floors, appropriate thiamine supplementation in the hospital setting remains inadequate. These patients are particularly susceptible to thiamine deficiency and subsequent WE due to both their alcohol use and active medical illnesses. The electronic medical record (EMR) has become ubiquitous in health care systems and can be used as a

The clinical diagnosis of pelvic inflammatory disease--reuse of electronic medical record data from 189 patients visiting a Swedish university hospital emergency department.

BACKGROUND: The pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) diagnosis is mostly based on clinical findings. Data on symptoms, signs, pelvic examination and laboratory tests were extracted from the electronic medical records in comparison with the diagnostic criteria of the PID Guideline of the US Center of Disease
