Xenografts from a human colon carcinoma and its metastases: establishment, characterization and differences in the pattern of carbohydrate-binding proteins.

Investigation of the pathogenesis of human colorectal carcinoma metastasis can be rendered experimentally possible by suitable human cell biological model systems. The purpose of these studies was to establish xenografts in nude mice from human colon carcinoma and from its metastasis in the same patient as an appropriate model. Surgically removed biopsy specimens from a colon adenocarcinoma (grade 3) and its local relapse two years later with metastases in the small intestine were established as xenotransplants and their growth characteristics examined. Both tissue types shared common characte

Human Movement Recognition Based on 3D Point Cloud Spatiotemporal Information from Millimeter-Wave Radar.

Human movement recognition is the use of perceptual technology to collect some of the limb or body movements presented. This practice involves the use of wireless signals, processing, and classification to identify some of the regular movements of the human body. It has a wide range of application prospects, including in intelligent pensions, remote health monitoring, and child supervision. Among the traditional human movement recognition methods, the widely used ones are video image-based recognition technology and Wi-Fi-based recognition technology. However, in some dim and imperfect weather

[Epidemiological characteristics and research progress of monkeypox in 2022].

Monkeypox is a zoonosis caused by monkeypox virus. Monkeypox was endemic mainly in central and western Africa in the past. Since May 7, 2022, monkeypox outbreaks have been reported in many non-epidemic countries and regions around the world. As of December 25, 2022, monkeypox cases have been detected in 110 countries and areas. Moreover, human to human transmission, especially among men who have sex with men, has aroused high global concern. The incidence, transmission route and clinical characteristics of monkeypox in 2022 seemed different from those in the past. Therefore, this paper summari

Unequal access to restorative coastal blue-green places: social vulnerability and place-based well-being opportunities in a coastal metropolis.

BACKGROUND: Urban blue-green environments are vital components of the urban exposome, shaping daily opportunities for physical activity, stress mitigation, and broader public health. However, these benefits depend on daily accessibility. In compact coastal metropolises, extensive nature may coexist with highly unequal residential access. This study investigates whether socially vulnerable residential areas in Shenzhen experience reduced exposure to public green and coastal blue spaces. METHODS: Using 4,071 residential patches, a residential-scale exposure framework was developed. Social vulne

The associations of code reform zoning and activity-oriented zoning with neighborhood social connectedness in the U.S., including mediation by walkability and park coverage.

OBJECTIVE: Zoning codes influence the built environments of communities in the United States (U.S.), which in turn have potential to promote social connections. This study assessed associations between code reform zoning (CRZ) and activity-oriented zoning (AOZ) exposure and perceived neighborhood social connectedness and whether these associations were mediated by walkability and park coverage. METHODS: Data from the Current Population Survey September 2019 Volunteering and Civic Life Supplement were linked to U.S. county-level data on (1) population-level exposure to CRZ and an index of 10 A

Study of Neighborhood Environment for Cardiovascular Health in a Squatter Area in Nepal.

Background Behavioral risk factors for cardiovascular diseases are prevalent among the urban poor in Nepal. Understanding environmental factors such as the availability of retailers selling tobacco, alcohol, and junk food, as well as neighbourhood access to and the built environment's support for physical activity is critical for addressing the rising burden of cardiovascular disease in the community. Objective To identify aspects of the community environment that contribute to behavioral risk factors, focusing on the food supply system, built environment, walkability, and the marketing, avail

Binge Drinking and Crime: Accounting for Alcohol Availability in Neighborhoods.

Background: The relationship between alcohol availability and crime is relatively well established. On the other hand, alcohol availability in neighborhoods may result in excessive alcohol use that is associated with crime, and we know less about the role that binge drinking has in crime. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention defines binge drinking as "consuming 5 or more drinks on an occasion for men or 4 or more drinks on an occasion for women." Methods: In this study, we gathered Milwaukee, Wisconsin 2021 data on binge drinking from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, a

The association between neighborhood-level social fragmentation and distressing psychotic-like experiences in early adolescence: the moderating role of close friends.

BACKGROUND: Early exposure to neighborhood social fragmentation has been shown to be associated with schizophrenia. The impact of social fragmentation and friendships on distressing psychotic-like experiences (PLE) remains unknown. We investigate the relationships between neighborhood social fragmentation, number of friends, and distressing PLE among early adolescents. METHODS: Data were collected from the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development Study. Generalized linear mixed models tested associations between social fragmentation and distressing PLE, as well as the moderating role of the num

The Contribution of Neighborhood Characteristics to Psychological Symptom Severity in a Cohort of Injured Black Men.

BACKGROUND: Traumatic injury is not evenly distributed by race and class in the USA. Black men are marginalized in the society, often reside in disadvantaged neighborhoods, and are at higher risk for injury mortality and ongoing physical and psychological problems following injury. Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and depressive symptom severity are among several problematic and disabling conditions faced by injury survivors. While much research has examined individual factors that lead to increased post-injury psychological symptom severity, the contribution of the social and physical en

The role of neighbourhood environments in hospitalization risk for diabetes and related conditions: A population-based cohort analysis by remoteness and deprivation indices.

BACKGROUND: Most socio-epidemiological studies on diabetes incidence, prevalence, or hospitalization focus on individual-level risk factors. This population-based cohort study sought to advance understanding on the associations of contextual characteristics and risk of diabetes-related avoidable hospitalization (DRAH) among at-risk Canadians. DATA AND METHODS: A national cohort was compiled from the 2013/2014 Canadian Community Health Survey, representing 5.1 million adults aged 35 years and older, reporting having been diagnosed with diabetes, hypertension, or heart disease. Neighborhood disadvantage and immune-related illnesses among residents living in the US Gulf States.

PURPOSE: Neighborhood disadvantage has been associated with increased risk for pneumonia and influenza-associated hospitalizations. Few studies, however, have investigated how neighborhood disadvantage may influence immune-related illnesses. The aim of this study was to examine the association between neighborhooddisadvantage and immune-related illnesses. METHODS: We used data from the Gulf Long-term Follow-up (GuLF) Study (n = 32,608). Our analytic sample included home visit participants (n = 11,193) who had complete information on exposure and covariates (n = 10,543). Neighborhood disadvant

A systematic review of gender-specific rates of unipolar and bipolar disorders in community studies of pre-pubertal children.

OBJECTIVES: Gender-specific rates of unipolar and bipolar disorders are well established for cases with post-pubertal onset. However, there is less certainty about these rates in pre-pubertal children. We undertook a systematic review of community studies that report gender-specific rates for unipolar and bipolar disorders in young children, particularly cases of major depression and mania. METHOD: Computer databases (Medline, EMBASE, Index to Theses, and PsychInfo) were searched for non-clinical observational studies using recognized diagnostic criteria to identify unipolar and bipolar disor

Simulating the Impact of Zoning Policies on Equitably Reducing Neighborhood Tobacco Retailer Availability.

Living in a neighborhood with greater tobacco retailer availability (TRA) is associated with tobacco use, and there are persistent neighborhood racialized and socioeconomic inequities in TRA. Zoning could be leveraged as an innovative policy tool to equitably reduce TRA. In this study, we simulated the effect of zoning policies on reducing inequities in TRA in Oklahoma City (OKC) and Tulsa (Oklahoma). We spatially joined locations of tobacco retailers, zoning areas, and census tract sociodemographic characteristics (year 2023). We conducted 500 simulations to randomly remove 5-90% (in incremen

Overdose Prevention Centers and Neighborhood Commercial Activity in New York City.

IMPORTANCE: Overdose prevention centers (OPCs) are interventions to reduce overdose mortality and support health care engagement. In the US, concerns have been raised that OPCs may be associated with reduced economic activity in their surrounding neighborhoods. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate changes in the local economic activity in New York City (NYC), measured by neighborhood-level foot traffic and consumer spending, following the opening of the first 2 publicly recognized OPCs in the US. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This cohort study used anonymized mobility and spending data from June 1, 2

The mediating role of step counts in the relationship between diverse neighbourhood destinations and older adults' physical function.

Research has shown that access to activity-supportive neighbourhood destinations is associated with physical activity levels and physical functioning in older adults. However, the relative importance of different destinations and the mechanisms underlying these relationships remain unclear. We investigated (i) the relationships between the availability of diverse neighbourhood destinations and physical functioning in Taiwanese older adults and (ii) whether step counts mediated these relationships. Data were analysed from 206 participants aged 65 years or above, recruited from geriatrics outpat

A person-centered and genetically informed approach toward characterizing multidomain resilience to neighborhood disadvantage in youth.

BACKGROUND: Examining resilience to adversity across multiple behavioral domains (e.g., psychological well-being, social functioning) can better characterize positive development and inform novel prevention and intervention efforts. However, few studies have employed person-centered methods to examine individual profiles of resilience across multiple domains in youth. Further, research exploring contextual predictors of resilience has rarely used genetically informed designs, which are critical for eliminating potential confounds. METHODS: The current study employed latent profile analysis (L

Associations Between Neighborhood Resources and Youths' Response to Reward Omission in a Task Modeling Negatively Biased Environments.

OBJECTIVE: Neighborhoods provide essential resources (eg, education, safe housing, green space) that influence neurodevelopment and mental health. However, we need a clearer understanding of the mechanisms mediating these relationships. Limited access to neighborhood resources may hinder youths from achieving their goals and, over time, shape their behavioral and neurobiological response to negatively biased environments blocking goals and rewards. METHOD: To test this hypothesis, 211 youths (aged ∼13.0 years, 48% boys, 62% identifying as White, 75% with a psychiatric disorder diagnosis) perf

The association between neighborhood socioeconomic deprivation and mental health in low- and middle-income countries: A scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Environmental research on mental health primarily originates from high-income countries, while information about the rest of the world remains limited. AIMS: This study examined: (1) the available published research evidence regarding the association between neighborhood-level deprivation and indicators of mental health and illness in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), and (2) the gaps in the relevant research in LMIC settings that should be addressed in future studies. METHOD: First, we systematically searched for relevant primary studies in electronic databases (Ovid Med
