Recently, it was proposed that a processing principle called adaptive stochastic resonance plays a major role in the auditory system, and serves to maintain optimal sensitivity even to highly variable sound pressure levels. As a side effect, in case of reduced auditory input, such as permanent hearing loss or frequency specific deprivation, this mechanism may eventually lead to the perception of phantom sounds like tinnitus or the Zwicker tone illusion. Using computational modeling, the biological plausibility of this processing principle was already demonstrated. Here, we provide experimental

In 1993, the Internal Medicine Journal published 'Chemotherapy made easier', outlining developments in supportive care of patients undergoing chemotherapy. This described the contemporary state of anti-emetics, colony stimulating factors, cardiac toxicity, neurotoxicity, development of drug analogues and venous access devices. Twenty-five years later, we update the measures that improve the tolerability of the plethora of new anti-cancer therapies, which have extended well beyond traditional chemotherapy agents to include immunotherapy and targeted therapies. Optimisation of supportive care is

Biallelic variants in the NDE1 gene have been shown to occur in extreme microcephaly. Most of the patients displayed microlissencephaly but one with microhydranencephaly. We report on three sibs in which the brain MRI and CT scans demonstrated variable degree of reduced volume of cerebral hemispheres and ventriculomegaly. Further, they had agenesis of corpus callosum, cerebellar, and brainstem hypoplasia. Fetal ultrasound at 32 weeks' gestation of the third sib revealed severe micrencephaly with extensive hydranencephaly and an anomaly consistent with non cleaved (fused) thalami. Because of th

The conscious experience of being the author of our own actions is thought to be grounded in pre-reflective and low-level sensorimotor representations of the self as different from the other. It has been suggested that the inferior parietal lobe (IPL) is generally involved in self-other differentiation processes and in providing an explicit sense of action authorship. However, direct evidence for its causal and functional role in distinguishing self-related and other-related sensorimotor representations is lacking. The current study employed theta-burst stimulation (TBS) to condition left IPL'

In recent years, applications like Apple's Siri or Microsoft's Cortana have created the illusion that one can actually "chat" with a machine. However, a perfectly natural human-machine interaction is far from real as none of these tools can empathize. This issue has raised an increasing interest in speech emotion recognition systems, as the possibility to detect the emotional state of the speaker. This possibility seems relevant to a broad number of domains, ranging from man-machine interfaces to those of diagnostics. With this in mind, in the present work, we explored the possibility of apply

Some individuals with dyslexia demonstrate deficits in reading, visual attention, and visual processing which can be attributed to a functional failure of the magnocells in the visual system or in the dorsal visual pathway. The study examines the role of magno/dorsal function in dyslexic adults compared with normal, illiterate, and semi-literate readers. Coherent motion and coherent form were used in Experiment 1, and the frequency doubling illusion and static-gratings were used in Experiment 2. If a magno/dorsal deficit is demonstrated for dyslexic readers but not illiterate, semi-literate, a

In the flash-lag illusion, a brief visual flash and a moving object presented at the same location appear to be offset with the flash trailing the moving object. A considerable amount of studies investigated the visual flash-lag effect, and flash-lag-like effects have also been observed in audition, and cross-modally between vision and audition. In the present study, we investigate whether a similar effect can also be observed when using only haptic stimuli. A fast vibration (or buzz, lasting less than 20 ms) was applied to the moving finger of the observers and employed as a "haptic flash." P

Spinal cord injuries disrupt bidirectional communication between the patient's brain and body. Here, we demonstrate a new approach for reproducing lower limb somatosensory feedback in paraplegics by remapping missing leg/foot tactile sensations onto the skin of patients' forearms. A portable haptic display was tested in eight patients in a setup where the lower limbs were simulated using immersive virtual reality (VR). For six out of eight patients, the haptic display induced the realistic illusion of walking on three different types of floor surfaces: beach sand, a paved street or grass. Addi

As a popular form of recreational risk taking, gambling games offer a paradigm for decision neuroscience research. As an individual behavior, gambling becomes dysfunctional in a subset of the population, with debilitating consequences. Gambling disorder has been recently reconceptualized as a "behavioral addiction" in the DSM-5, based on emerging parallels with substance use disorders. Why do some individuals undergo this transition from recreational to disordered gambling? The biomedical model of problem gambling is a "brain disorder" account that posits an underlying neurobiological abnormal

The effect of multi-modal vs uni-modal prior stimuli on the subsequent processing of a simple flash stimulus was studied in the context of the audio-visual 'flash-beep' illusion, in which the number of flashes a person sees is influenced by accompanying beep stimuli. EEG recordings were made while combinations of simple visual and audio-visual stimuli were presented. The experiments found that the electric field strength related to a flash stimulus was stronger when it was preceded by a multi-modal flash/beep stimulus, compared to when it was preceded by another uni-modal flash stimulus. This

Many real-life decisions in complex and changing environments are guided by the decision maker's beliefs, such as her perceived control over decision outcomes (i.e., agency), leading to phenomena like the "illusion of control". However, the neural mechanisms underlying the "agency" effect on belief-based decisions are not well understood. Using functional imaging and a card guessing game, we revealed that the agency manipulation (i.e., either asking the subjects (SG) or the computer (CG) to guess the location of the winning card) not only affected the size of subjects' bets, but also their "wo

Using a metascience framework for improving meta-analyses, Jansen et al. (2025) tested the accuracy and efficiency of data extraction from primary studies used in meta-analyses with a range of large language models. Efficiency was impressive: Across thousands of studies and hundreds of variables, eight large language models took less than an hour combined to extract hundreds of thousands of data points-work estimated to take a human coder >6,500 hr. Nevertheless, accuracy was inconsistent, ranging from high to low depending on the variable. From these results, Jansen et al. recommended (a) a r

Headache, dizziness and vertigo are non-specific but frequently reported symptoms in patients with hypertension. When evaluating headache, clinicians must systematically exclude primary headache disorders - such as migraine, tension-type headache and trigeminal autonomic cephalalgias - before attributing symptoms to hypertension. If a primary headache is suspected, referral to a neurologist is essential for specialized management. Hypertension-related headache must fulfil specific diagnostic criteria, including a high blood pressure level (≥180/120mmHg), a demonstrated causal relationship thro

We examined whether personal and vicarious experience with COVID-19 entails change in personal and comparative optimism (the belief that one is less at risk for hazards than others, also known as unrealistic optimism, optimistic bias, or illusion of unique invulnerability) in a large (N ≈ 5000) 5-Wave longitudinal study conducted in Belgium in December 2020-May 2021. Participants reported their experience with COVID-19 as well as their expectations concerning the likelihood that they and the average peer would get infected and, after an infection, would suffer severe disease or rather register

Advanced technology and increasing knowledge about aging faces have combined to create the illusion of thread lifting to replace surgical interventions. However, results that came far beyond expectations led to a heavy suspicion of these tools. However, combined treatments with fillers would have better outcomes with a synergetic effect. In this study, 52 patients were treated with a specific thread, whereas soft tissue support was added to supervene the lifting effect of the threads. With a mean age of 48 years, these patients were treated with 3 pairs of mid and lower facial areas, and one f

A Right Ear Advantage (REA) is well-established in perceptual tasks but it has been found also during imagery. It is ascribed to the left temporoparietal activity for language, and it can be absent/reversed in some clinical conditions including auditory hallucinations. We applied 1-Hz repetitive TMS over TP3/TP4 (left/right language areas) identified through neuronavigation in 18 healthy participants, before administering a modified white noise (WN) speech illusion paradigm: a voice was presented at one ear, at the same or lower intensities with respect to binaural WN. In some trials the voice

Developments in technology and the Internet have made modern lives more convenient, yet they also created new mediums and means for sexual offending. Video voyeurism, for one, gained increasing research attention; however, most research focused on male-on-female perpetration, where heterosexual men take photos of female victims' private parts in public places without consent or acknowledgment (e.g., "up-skirting" and "down-blousing"). This study was the first to examine male-on-male video voyeurism in the Global South. Postings (N = 226) were collected from a large web forum dedicated to Chine

Multimodal neuroimaging, such as combined electroencephalography (EEG) and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), are being increasingly used to investigate the human brain in healthy and diseased conditions. However, certain neuroimaging data are typically acquired in different body positions, e.g., supine fMRI and upright EEG, overlooking the effect of body position on signal characteristics. In the current study we examined EEG signals in three different positions, i.e., supine, standing and sitting, in patients with a balance disorder called mal de debarquement syndrome (MdDS). Indi

The integration of local moving elements into a unified gestalt percept has previously been linked to the posterior parietal cortex. There are two possible interpretations for the lack of involvement of other occipital regions. The first is that parietal cortex is indeed uniquely functionally specialized to perform grouping. Another possibility is that other visual regions can perform grouping as well, but that the large spatial separation of the local elements used previously exceeded their neurons' receptive field (RF) sizes, preventing their involvement. In this study we distinguished betwe

Background The retrospective diagnosis of Fyodor Mikhailovich Dostoyevsky's (1821-1881) neurological and psychiatric disease proves to be particularly interesting. Recent neurobiological data suggest a solution to the questions regarding the writer's retrospective diagnosis, claiming the insular cortex to be the origin of the rare ecstatic seizures. Regarding Dostoyevsky's pathological gambling, this hypothesis is consistent with another finding from recent neuroscience, namely that the malfunction of the insula could be an important underlying pathology in gambling disorder.
