Perceived safety and trust shape transgender and gender diverse participation in exercise science: a consensual qualitative research study.

INTRODUCTION: Transgender and gender diverse people are substantially underrepresented in exercise science research. This limits the inclusivity and generalizability of evidence guiding exercise, physical activity, and physical rehabilitation practices. While prior health research has examined barriers and facilitators to transgender and gender diverse participation, little is known about how transgender and gender diverse individuals perceive exercise science research specifically. The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore factors that may influence transgender and gender diverse i

Building a Global Research Network for Fair, Accountable, Interpretable, and Responsible AI in Emergency Care: Protocol for a FAIR-EC Study.

BACKGROUND: The current landscape of emergency care (EC) is marked by high demand, leading to issues such as emergency department boarding, overcrowding, and subsequent delays that impact the quality and safety of patient care. Integrating data science into EC can enhance decision-making with predictive, preventative, personalized, and participatory approaches. However, gaps in adherence to fairness, accountability, interpretability, and responsibility are evident, particularly due to barriers to data-sharing, which often result in a lack of transparency and robust oversight in these applicati

Point-of-care p24 antigen detection for early infant diagnosis of HIV infection: cross-sectional and longitudinal studies in Zambia.

BACKGROUND: Early infant diagnosis of HIV infection is challenging in sub-Saharan Africa, particularly in rural areas, leading to delays in diagnosis and treatment. Use of a point-of-care test would overcome many challenges. This study evaluated the validity of a novel point-of-care p24 antigen detection test (LYNX) in rural and urban settings in southern Zambia. METHODS: Two studies were conducted: a cross-sectional study from 2014 to 2015 at Macha Hospital (LYNX Hospital study) and a longitudinal study from 2016 to 2018 at 12 health facilities in Southern Province, Zambia (NSEBA study). Medical Research Charities and Biopharmaceutical Companies as Partners in Patient-Centred R&D.

Life science research and development (R&D) companies are all too aware of the importance of patient perspectives but also of the barriers to engaging directly with patients, not least compliance, complex technical and regulatory issues, and the need to meet multifaceted expectations. Medical research charities (MRCs), highly technical and professional organisations, work directly with patients; they represent an expert resource for the science of their field, for disease-related patient advocacy issues and to advise and assist R&D companies in devising meaningful trials. The Pistoia Alliance,

The Evolving Use of Electronic Health Records (EHR) for Research.

Electronic health records (EHR) have been implemented successfully in a majority of United States healthcare systems in some form. There has been a rise in secondary uses of EHR, especially for research. EHR data is large, heterogenous, incomplete, noisy, and primarily created for purposes other than research. This presents many challenges, many of which are beginning to be overcome with the application of computer science artificial intelligence techniques, such as natural language processing and machine learning. EHR are gradually being redesigned to facilitate future research, though we are

The efforts of WHO and Pugwash to eliminate chemical and biological weapons--a memoir.

The World Health Organization and the Pugwash Conferences on Science and World Affairs (Nobel Peace Prize 1995) have been involved in questions concerning chemical and biological arms since the early 1950s. This memoir reviews a number of milestones in the efforts of these organizations to achieve the elimination of these weapons through international treaties effectively monitored and enforced for adherence to their provisions. It also highlights a number of outstanding personalities who were involved in the efforts to establish and implement the two major treaties now in effect, the Biologic

What do we know about elite athlete oral health?

Aims Multiple studies have identified that dental caries, periodontal diseases and erosive toothwear are common in elite athletes and possibly more prevalent than in non-athlete populations. The aims of this paper are to: 1) explore what we know about oral health in elite athletes and why we should consider athletes a priority for oral health interventions; 2) to consider the determinants of oral health and how to tackle the potential risks to athletes; and 3) to provide a summary for providers of oral health care and oral health policy, as well as athletes and sports medicine practitioners an

Association Discovery Approach in Healthcare Big Data to Identify Drug Safety and Drug Repurposing Signals.

Data science approaches have been increasingly implemented in healthcare big data to evaluate the safety and effectiveness of drugs. Association discovery is a data mining approach that finds potentially associated elements in high-dimensional data. We present a novel implementation of the association discovery approach in longitudinal healthcare data to identify drug safety and drug repurposing signals from positive and inverse associations between drug use and clinical outcomes, respectively. We used the 10% sample data from the Australian Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (2014-2024), which co

A systematic review on vaccine developmental approaches: Evaluating efficacy, and addressing challenges of infectious diseases in the post-COVID-19 era.

Vaccination prevents millions of fatalities annually and works as one of the most effective and cost-efficient public health interventions. This systematic review critically evaluates vaccine development strategies in the post-COVID-19 era, focusing on platform technologies, delivery systems, and the regulatory and societal challenges that shape vaccine efficacy and accessibility. The COVID-19 pandemic redefined expectations for vaccine science, compressing traditional development timelines, and accelerating the adoption of novel platforms, such as mRNA and viral vectors. While these innovatio

Animal vaccines and antimicrobial resistance: an underutilized tool.

Vaccination has been shown to be effective in the prevention, control and even eradication of animal diseases for more than a century. The use of vaccines in animals can also reduce, or totally prevent, the need to use antibiotics or other antimicrobial agents such as antiparasitic or antivirals. Furthermore, vaccination in animals can also enhance public health, especially when used against zoonotic diseases. However, availability and access to animal vaccines are not always granted, owing to different challenges such as safety or efficacy issues, unfit ways of administration or logistic cons

Single-dose human papillomavirus vaccination: an update.

Human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccines received regulatory approval and were recommended for use in young girls nearly 2 decades ago. Uptake is mostly high in resource-rich settings. In resource-limited settings, where the burden of cervical cancer is disproportionately high, access to and uptake of HPV vaccines are nowhere near satisfactory, despite evidence that HPV vaccination is highly cost-effective and a significant value-for-money investment. The discovery that only a single dose of the HPV vaccines may be needed to confer adequate protection may make equitable access to HPV vaccines possi
