[Latex: a complex allergy].

The authors review several of the most important aspects of latex allergy, an increasing problem in Public Health, which should be understood by all health professionals. After briefly presenting the history of the origin latex, from Hevea brasiliensis the authors describe the antigens of latex: Hev b1 to Hev b8, major allergens. They also note the crossed reactivity not only with foods, exotic fruits, but also with pneumoallergens and in particular the pollens. The groups at risk are essentially workers in the latex industry, health professionals and finally infants with spina bifida or other

Effects of generalized malnutrition on personality.

Anecdotal reports of changes in behavior under conditions of severe, protracted food deficits are of ancient lineage, whereas the psychometric investigations of the 20th century have been concerned primarily with the impairment of intellectual functioning in children who suffer or have suffered from protein-energy malnutrition. The present overview begins with the account of systematic observations of the behavioral effects of grossly inadequate food intake in World War II camps for prisoners of war and under conditions of epidemic starvation. The presentation is centered on quantitative asses

Food protein-induced enterocolitis syndrome: guidelines summary and practice recommendations.

Food protein-induced enterocolitis syndrome (FPIES) is a poorly understood non-IgE gastrointestinal-mediated food allergy that predominantly affects infants and young children. Cells of the innate immune system appear to be activated during an FPIES reaction. Acute FPIES typically presents between one and 4 hours after ingestion of the trigger food, with the principal symptom being profuse vomiting, and is often accompanied by pallor and lethargy. Additional features can include hypotension, hypothermia, diarrhoea, neutrophilia and thrombocytosis. In Australia, the most commonly reported foods

Antibiotics in the first week of life and the association with atopic diseases at ages 9-12: a prospective cohort study.

UNLABELLED: Dysbiosis in early life has been associated with the development of atopic diseases. In the INCA study, antibiotic treatment in the first week of life was associated with wheezing at 1 year and food allergies at 4-6 years. This follow-up study investigates whether these associations persist at age 9-12, and whether new associations with other atopic diseases have developed. The INCA cohort consisted of 436 children included in 2012-2015 to investigate the long-term effects of antibiotic treatment in the first week of life. Term-born infants from four Dutch hospitals were included,

[Control of iron deficiency in developing countries].

Iron deficiency is the most prevalent nutritional disorder worldwide, especially in developing countries. It occurs when iron absorption cannot compensate iron requirements and losses. Requirements are especially high in pregnant women, infants, young children and adolescents who run a higher risk of being iron-deficient. In developing countries, the main cause of iron deficiency is the low iron bioavailability of the diet. The consequences of iron deficiency are many and serious, affecting not only individuals' health but also the development of societies and countries. The prevention and the

Determinants of Child Malnutrition and Infant and Young Child Feeding Approaches in Cambodia.

Women's diets often decrease with regard to amounts per meal and day as well as diversity if a household's access to food is limited. The result is a monotonous diet that, in particular, negatively affects women's nutritional status during pregnancy and lactation and, thus, the infant. The infant's diet is of utmost importance, as it needs to meet the nutrient requirements especially during the first 2 years of life, a critical window for the child's healthy development. In Cambodia, infant and young child feeding (IYCF) practices are poor. Preparation of a special complementary meal in additi

Long-Term Weight Trajectories in Infants Receiving Prolonged Breastfeeding: Impact of Formula Supplementation.

OBJECTIVE: This study compared weight trajectories in infants breastfed for at least 1 year, with or without formula supplementation. STUDY DESIGN: A retrospective cohort of 252 infants followed in well-baby clinics. All infants were breastfed ≥12 months and received complementary foods at 4-6 months. Of these, 174 received no formula, and 78 received daily formula supplementation. Anthropometric data were collected from birth to 5 years of age. RESULTS: Among males, those breastfed without formula had significantly lower body weight between 13 and 18 months compared with those receiving for

Mother-to-infant transmission of the carcinogenic colibactin-producing bacteria.

BACKGROUND: The Escherichia coli strain that is known to produce the genotoxic secondary metabolite colibactin is linked to colorectal oncogenesis. Therefore, understanding the properties of such colibactin-positive E. coli and the molecular mechanism of oncogenesis by colibactin may provide us with opportunities for early diagnosis or prevention of colorectal oncogenesis. While there have been major advances in the characterization of colibactin-positive E. coli and the toxin it produces, the infection route of the clb + strain remains poorly characterized. RESULTS: We examined infants and t

The role of maternal diet and iron-folic acid supplements in influencing birth weight: evidence from India's National Family Health Survey.

AIM: To examine the role of maternal diet in determining low birth weight (LBW) in Indian infants. METHODS: Data from the National Family Health Survey (2005-06) were used. Multivariate regression analysis was used to analyse the effect of maternal diet on infant birth weight. RESULTS: Infants whose mothers consumed milk and curd daily [odds ratio (OR), 1.17; 95% confidence interval (CI), 1.06-1.29]; fruits daily (OR, 1.20; 95% CI, 1.07-1.36) or weekly (OR, 1.13; 95% CI, 1.02-1.24) had higher odds of not having a low birth weight baby. Ibuprofen and acute kidney injury in the newborn.

The pharmacological treatment of patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) in preterm infants remains a controversial issue, particularly with regard to the type of drug to be prescribed (ibuprofen or indomethacin) and the timing of the treatment, given their comparable effectiveness. For many years, indomethacin has been the drug of choice in the treatment of PDA. In April 2006, the United States Food and Drug Administration approved the use of ibuprofen lysine for closure of clinically significant PDA in premature infants < 32 weeks' gestation and weighing 500-1500 g. The available knowledge on the eff

Changing infant feeding practices and declining incidence of coeliac disease in West Somerset.

An association was investigated between changing infant feeding practices and a declining incidence of childhood coeliac disease and transient gluten intolerance (TGI) in West Somerset, England during 1971-92. Dietary histories of 18 patients with coeliac disease were compared with 23 controls during 1971-80 and eight patients with coeliac disease and 39 controls during 1981-92. Our findings showed that the declining incidence of coeliac disease and TGI were associated with changing infant feeding practices, characterised by the later introduction of dietary gluten, an increased use of baby ri

Dietary Patterns and Birth Weight-a Review.

Being born with low birth weight (LBW) is recognized as a disadvantage due to risk of early growth retardation, fast catch up growth, infectious disease, developmental delay, and death during infancy and childhood, as well as development of obesity and non-communicable diseases (NCDs) later in life. LBW is an indicator of fetal response to a limiting intrauterine environment, which may imply developmental changes in organs and tissue. Numerous studies have explored the effect of maternal intake of various nutrients and specific food items on birth weight (BW). Taking into account that people h

Parent feeding strategies for infants and young children at developmental risk in the first 24 months and their relationship to feeding stage and outcomes.

Parents adopt strategies to support successful feeding. The purpose of this study was to describe parent feeding strategies for children at risk for feeding disorders in the first 24 months and examine their relationship with food stage and concurrent feeding outcomes. Data was longitudinally collected from 220 parents of 257 infants who required neonatal intensive care via online questionnaires at 1-, 2-, 4-, 6-, 8-, 10-, 12-, 18-, and 24-months post term age. Types of food the child was eating at each age were organized into stages by most complex food eaten in the past week: liquids, purees

An update on the diagnosis and management of non-IgE-mediated food allergies in children.

The spectrum of non-IgE mediated conditions includes well-defined conditions like Food Protein-Induced Enterocolitis Syndrome (FPIES), Eosinophilic Oesophagitis (EoE), Food Protein-Induced Enteropathy, and Food Protein-Induced Allergic Proctocolitis, but also the more controversial food protein-induced dysmotility disorders like food protein-induced gastroesophageal reflux disease (FPGORD) and food protein-induced constipation (FPC). Typically, non-IgE mediated reactions are delayed, with symptom onset from hours to days after exposure to a culprit food. The diagnosis is mostly clinical, and f

Differential reinforcement of other behaviors to treat chronic rumination of mental retardates.

Food rumination is a maladaptive, life-threatening behavior observed among infants and institutional populations for the mentally retarded. Differential reinforcement of other behaviors (IRT greater than N) was experimentally studied as a method of reducing his behavior. Two mentally retarded clients emitted reduced rumination behaviors after implementation of the differential reinforcement procedure.

Amplifying enablers, challenges and gaps in the implementation of Baby-Friendly Community Initiative (BFCI) at subnational level in Kenya: a cross-sectional qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Optimal maternal infant and young child nutrition is a cornerstone of child survival and development. Kenya adapted the Baby Friendly Hospital Initiative (BFHI), to strengthen maternal, infant, and young child nutrition through community level interventions, multisectoral engagement, and integration within the Community Health Strategy and Primary Health Care. Despite strong policy support, scale-up and sustainability remain uneven. This study examined enablers, barriers, and gaps influencing the implementation of Baby Friendly Community Initiative (BFCI) in Kenya. METHODS: A qual

Inactivation of Emerging Opportunistic Foodborne Pathogens Cronobacter spp. and Arcobacter spp. on Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Products: Effects of Emerging Chemical and Physical Methods in Model and Real Food Systems-A Review.

The consumption of fresh fruit and vegetables is essential for a healthy diet as they contain a diverse composition of vitamins, minerals, fibre, and bioactive compounds. However, cross-contamination during harvest and post-harvest poses a high risk of microbial contamination. Therefore, handling fruit and vegetables during processing and contact with wet equipment and utensil surfaces is an ideal environment for microbial contamination and foodborne illness. Nevertheless, less attention has been paid to some emerging pathogens that are now increasingly recognised as transmissible to humans th

Characterization of the neurotoxin isolated from a Clostridium baratii strain implicated in infant botulism.

Botulism is widely known to result from ingestion of food containing botulinum neurotoxin produced in situ by certain strains of Clostridium botulinum. Infant botulism caused by C. botulinum, unlike the food-borne intoxication, is the toxicoinfectious form of botulism (S. S. Arnon, p. 331-345, in G. E. Lewis, ed., Biomedical Aspects of Botulism, 1981). The strain of Clostridium baratii implicated in infant botulism produced a neurotoxin that was neutralized with antiserum for botulinum neurotoxin serotype F (J. D. Hall, L. M. McCroskey, B. J. Pincomb, and C. L. Hatheway, J. Clin. Microbiol. 21

Differential diagnosis of operable disease of the esophagus.

The time interval between ingestion and regurgitation and the stage of digestion in regurgitated food may be factors helpful in diagnosing disease of the esophagus. In most cases diagnosis can be made by x-ray alone, but where x-ray evidence is insufficient esophagoscopy is often justified.X-ray investigation for foreign bodies should include films of the neck. Cough is a common symptom of the presence of foreign bodies; obstruction may result from inflammation or edema. Perforation is most often caused by foreign bodies or by instrumentation. Esophagoscopy is hazardous in this condition and t
