Circuit-based frameworks of depressive behaviors: The role of reward circuitry and beyond.

Major depressive disorder (MDD) is a common but serious neuropsychiatric affliction that comprises a diverse set of symptoms such as the inability to feel pleasure, lack of motivation, changes in appetite, and cognitive difficulties. Given the patient to patient symptomatic variability in MDD and differing severities of individual symptoms, it is likely that maladaptive changes in distinct brain areas may mediate discrete symptoms in MDD. The advent and recent surge of studies using viral-genetic approaches have allowed for circuit-specific dissection of networks underlying motivational behavi

Neural correlates of expected risks and returns in risky choice across development.

Adolescence is often described as a period of increased risk taking relative to both childhood and adulthood. This inflection in risky choice behavior has been attributed to a neurobiological imbalance between earlier developing motivational systems and later developing top-down control regions. Yet few studies have decomposed risky choice to investigate the underlying mechanisms or tracked their differential developmental trajectory. The current study uses a risk-return decomposition to more precisely assess the development of processes underlying risky choice and to link them more directly t

Anxiety-like, novelty-seeking and memory/learning behavioral traits in male Wistar rats submitted to early weaning.

The most frequently used animal models of early weaning (EW) in rodents, maternal deprivation and pharmacological inhibition of lactation, present confounding factors, such as high stress or drug side effects, that can mask or interact with the effects of milk deprivation per se. Given these limitations, the development of new models of EW may provide useful information regarding the impact of a shortened period of breastfeeding on the endocrine and nervous systems, both during development and at adulthood. Using a model of EW in which lactating Wistar rat dams are wrapped with a bandage to bl

Influenza Vaccinations for All Pregnant Women? Better Evidence Is Needed.

Pregnant women are a World Health Organization (WHO) priority group for influenza vaccination, but evidence of effectiveness and safety for pregnant women comes from observational studies, which are notoriously prone to confounding by indication and healthy-vaccinee bias. The latter type of bias leads to an overestimation of the effectiveness and safety of the vaccine, which may be what occurs in pregnant women. Indeed, better educated women with healthier behaviors and who seek better medical care may be more adherent to vaccinations recommended by doctors, scientific societies and health aut

Relationships between family functioning and HIV/AIDS-related preventive behaviors among young students with sexual experience.

OBJECTIVES: The prevalence of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) remains a severe public health issue, especially among young people. To determine whether family functioning and self-monitoring influence HIV/acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS)-related preventive behaviors among young students with sexual experience, we conducted a cross-sectional exploratory study. METHODS: This study, which used a convenience sampling method, was conducted in Fuzhou, China. The questionnaires used for this research included the Adaptation-Partnership-Growth-Affection-Resolve (APGAR) scale, the Self-Mon

Latent variable analysis of positive and negative valence processing focused on symptom and behavioral units of analysis in mood and anxiety disorders.

BACKGROUND: Mood and anxiety disorders are highly heterogeneous and their underlying pathology is complex. The Research Domain Criteria (RDoC) approach seeks to establish dimensionally and neuroscience-based descriptions of psychopathology that may inform better classification and treatment approaches. The current investigation sought to determine the latent variables underlying positive and negative valence processing in terms of symptoms and behavioral units of analysis. METHOD: As part of an ongoing study, individuals with mood and anxiety problems were recruited largely from primary care

Turning to 'Trusted Others': A Narrative Review of Providing Social Support to First Responders.

First responders, such as paramedics and firefighters, encounter duty-related traumatic exposures, which can lead to post-traumatic stress (PTS). Although social support protects against PTS, we know little about how first responders' families, spouses/partners, friends, and care-partners (i.e., 'trusted others') provide social support. This narrative review explores support behaviors, coping strategies, and resources trusted others use to support first responders. A structured literature search yielded 24 articles. We used House's (1981) conceptual framework to inform our analysis. We identif

Mental Health Status and Its Psychosocial Correlates Among Help-Seeking Transgender Individuals: Experiences from a Clinic in South India.

PURPOSE: As India is making legal and policy-level changes to protect the interests of transgender (TG) individuals, there has been an increase in the number of TG individuals seeking help from medical professionals. There is still a lack of information regarding the life experiences of TG individuals from India. These life experiences may affect their mental health and help-seeking behaviors. This study conducted in a mental health facility in South India aims to describe the mental health of TG individuals initiating gender-affirming procedures and its psychosocial correlates. METHODS: Cons

Formal and informal antimicrobial trade and usage in farmed animals of the urban area of Lomé, Togo.

Inappropriate antibiotic use in livestock is a key driver of antimicrobial resistance. Surveillance and prevention efforts in low-income countries are challenged by widespread informal sales and administration. We investigated the antibiotics trade network for farm animals and farmers' antibiotic purchasing and usage behaviors in an urban region with high human and animal population density and prevalence of antimicrobial resistance. We conducted semi-structured interviews with 116 farmers in Lomé, Togo, in areas where multidrug-resistant bacteria had been identified. Using multiple-factor ana

Exploring the Psychosocial Influences on Hepatitis B and Liver Cancer Disparities.

BACKGROUND: Diverse communities from Asia, the Pacific Islands, the Caribbean, and Africa are disproportionately impacted by chronic hepatitis B. Low screening rates and limited engagement with disease management contribute to higher rates of liver cancer. This qualitative study aimed to explore the psychosocial factors influencing health behaviors related to hepatitis B and liver cancer, to inform the development of a public health communication campaign tailored to highly impacted communities. METHODS: In collaboration with community partners, individuals identifying with each community wer

Post-pandemic aging in Taiwan: Social networks, intergenerational relationships, and quality of life.

PURPOSE: In Taiwan's post-COVID-19 context, universal National Health Insurance (NHI) and broad provider choice may contribute to information asymmetries that influence how older adults seek and navigate care. This cross-sectional study examined the associations among social network support (SNS), intergenerational relationships (IRs), healthcare-seeking behavior attitudes (HSBA), and quality of life (QoL) in community-dwelling older adults in northern Taiwan. METHODS: A total of 150 participants (mean age = 73.5 ± 5.9 years) completed a newly developed and validated HSBA scale, a validated S

Familial risk of postpartum depression.

OBJECTIVE: Many psychiatric diseases have a strong familial aggregation, but it is unknown whether postpartum depression (PPD) without prior psychiatric history aggregates in families. METHODS: Based on Danish national registers, we constructed a cohort with information on 848,544 singleton deliveries (1996-2017). Women with an episode of PPD were defined as having used antidepressant medication and/or had a hospital contact for depression within 6 months after delivery. Those with psychiatric history prior to the delivery were excluded. We estimated relative risk (RR) of PPD, comparing women

"I Don't Want to Be an Ostrich": Managing Mothers' Uncertainty during BRCA1/2 Genetic Counseling.

Families who face genetic disease risk must learn how to grapple with complicated uncertainties about their health and future on a long-term basis. Women who undergo BRCA 1/2 genetic testing describe uncertainty related to personal risk as well as their loved ones', particularly daughters', risk. The genetic counseling setting is a prime opportunity for practitioners to help mothers manage uncertainty in the moment but also once they leave a session. Uncertainty Management Theory (UMT) helps to illuminate the various types of uncertainty women encounter and the important role of communication

Factor structure and validity of the Medication Adherence Questionnaire (MAQ) with cigarette smokers trying to quit.

The Medication Adherence Questionnaire (MAQ) is a scale used to evaluate adherence to medications. The present study assessed the factor structure and validity of the MAQ with cigarette smokers. A principal components analysis was conducted on MAQ scores from a sample of smokers presenting for treatment in a clinical trial of naltrexone and nicotine patch for smoking cessation (N = 385). Indices of convergent and predictive validity were tested using electronic medication caps for naltrexone, nicotine patch counts, plasma drug levels of naltrexone, and treatment outcomes. The principal compone

Predictors of methamphetamine use in a longitudinal birth cohort.

BACKGROUND: Identifying predictors of methamphetamine use can inform population prevention strategies. METHODS: Participants (n = 1265) born in Christchurch, New Zealand were followed from birth to age 40. Methamphetamine outcomes (any use since the last interview, and regular use, defined as any period of at least weekly use) were ascertained by self-report at six interviews from age 18 to 40. Predictors with plausible associations with methamphetamine use were extracted from the study database. These were grouped into early predictors (age 0-16), comprising childhood, familial and individua
