"I never wanted to burn any bridges": discerning between pushing too hard and not enough in trainees' acts of professional resistance.

As trainees resist social harm and injustice in medicine, they must navigate the tension between pushing too hard and risking their reputation, or not enough and risking no change at all. We explore the discernment process by examining what trainees attend to moments before and while they are resisting to understand how they manage this tension. We interviewed 18 medical trainees who shared stories of resisting social harm and injustice in their training environments. Interviews were analyzed using open and focused coding using Vinthagen and Johansson's work, which conceptualizes resistance as

Clinicians' power in the inpatient care of anorexia nervosa: A qualitative investigation of consumer perspectives.

Medically compromised people with anorexia nervosa are cared for in inpatient settings where clinicians closely monitor health and safety. Clinicians are in a position of power, with the capacity to impose mandated weight gain to achieve medical stabilisation. Consumers are in a vulnerable position, compelled to temporarily relinquish autonomy and to accept coercive practices that often diminish the quality of the therapeutic relationship. Clinicians' position of power in mental healthcare has a dual potential for both healing and harm, and limited attention has been given to consumers' views

Research capacity strengthening methods and meanings: negotiating power in a global health programme on violence against women.

BACKGROUND: There has been much critical reflection among global health researchers about how power imbalances between high-income countries and low- and middle-income country collaborators are perpetuated through research programmes. Research capacity strengthening (RCS) is considered both a mechanism through which to redress structural power imbalances in global health research and a vehicle for their perpetuation. This paper examines the RCS programme of a multi-county study on violence against women, focussing on how it addressed power imbalances between countries and the challenges involv

Controlling for Confirmation Bias in Child Sexual Abuse Interviews.

Confirmation bias is one of the most important sources of error in clinical assessment and clinical judgment. There has been little scholarship on the role of confirmation bias in forensic interviews with children who may have been abused sexually. This article reviews relevant research and explores the possible role of confirmation bias in forensic interviews. Confirmation bias may come into play because these interviews usually are conducted under the auspices of one side of the adversarial judicial system, the prosecution. In addition, the existing forensic interview protocols have paid lit

A six-step brief intervention to reduce distress and increase treatment readiness in problem gamblers.

OBJECTIVE: The majority of people with gambling problems contact helplines when they are in crisis, hampering their capacity to explore suitable treatment options. To date, there has been limited research identifying the best way to support individuals to reduce distress and maximise further treatment-seeking. In this paper, we describe the development and piloting of the resulting six-step brief intervention. METHOD: A six-step brief intervention was developed based on a literature review of existing interventions for crisis management, semi-structured interviews with 19 participants compris

Improving intoxicated witness recall with the Enhanced Cognitive Interview.

RATIONALE: Witnesses and victims typically provide the central leads in police investigations, yet statistics from past research indicates in many instances these individuals are intoxicated. OBJECTIVES: To date, however, no research has looked at how best to interview such witnesses to maximise the amount of accurate information they recall. METHODS: In the present research, whilst on a night out, participants watched a videoed theft whilst either sober or moderately (MBAC = 0.05%) or severely (MBAC = 0.14%) intoxicated. A week later, in a different location, participants were interviewed u

The Interaction Between Asthma and Anxiety: An Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis of Young People's Experiences.

Asthma and anxiety are highly co-morbid, and their interaction leads to exacerbations for both conditions. This study explored the interplay between these two conditions from the perspective of children and adolescents. The objective was to identify potential mechanisms of interaction between asthma and anxiety, and to derive improvements for prevention and treatment. Eleven semi-structured interviews of young people (aged 11-15), who met criteria for both asthma and anxiety, were analysed using interpretative phenomenological analysis. Well-established qualitative research recommendations wer

African-American caregivers' perspectives on aggressive behaviors in dementia.

PURPOSE: Though African-American dementia caregivers report less upset and more confidence managing aggressive behaviors when compared to whites, their contextual experience remains unclear and this study explores that context. METHODS: Semi-structured interviews with thirteen African-American family caregivers were analyzed using content analysis. RESULTS: Two themes emerged, “It’s the disease…not the person” and “You got to pick your battles.” “It’s the disease…not the person,” reframing aggressive behavior, included three sub-themes. Sometimes the person with dementia seemed like a strang

Pathways towards different long-term outcomes after naturalistic psychotherapy.

This study suggests some potential pathways leading towards maintained gains or further growth versus deterioration after naturalistic psychotherapy with experienced clinicians. This is explored in a way that transcends specific theoretical orientations. Sixteen therapies, all showing reliable improvement on Outcome Questionnaire 45.2 (OQ-45) at treatment termination but varying in later post-therapy development, were included in this study. Building on previous content and correlational analyses, individual cases were explored qualitatively in search for developmental patterns of potential re

A preliminary qualitative investigation of voice hearing and its association with dissociation in chronic PTSD.

Following on from a quantitative study, this research used a qualitative methodology to investigate the lived experience of 3 men with chronic posttraumatic stress disorder associated with the conflict in Northern Ireland who reported auditory hallucinations. Data analysis used the Framework method. Results showed that beliefs about voices, dissociation of identity and body, and interpersonal impact were central superordinate themes associated with auditory hallucinations in posttraumatic stress disorder. Central subordinate themes included feeling a lack of controllability over voices, experi

[Partner relationship and sexuality of female-to-male transsexuals].

Partnership and sexuality have received little attention in research on transsexualism. In particular, the viewpoints of partners of transsexual individuals were scarcely taken into consideration. We conducted a qualitative study on five long-term partnerships of female-to-male transsexuals and their female partners, using a semi-structured interview to explore relationship and sexuality. The rejection of the female biological sex by transsexuals is reinforced by their partner's non-percipience of the female transsexuals' biology. Female attributes in men appeared to be important for the partn
