[Changes of Intestinal Mucosal Barrier and Intestinal Flora in Rats with Severe Acute Pancreatitis].

This paper is to explore changes of intestinal mucosal barrier, intestinal flora, and bacterial translocation in rats with severe acute panc … cation rates were much higher (P < 0.01 or P < 0.05) and the pathology scores of pancreas and small intestines were also significantly higher (P < 0.01) than those in the control group. These results indicated that in severe acute pancreatitis rats, the intestinal mucosal barrier was severely damaged and the dysbacteriosis occurs in the intestinal canal. And …

[L-lactate as a serum marker of intestinal ischemia in patients with complicated intestinal obstruction].

BACKGROUND: The intestinal obstruction secondary to internal hernia is a diagnostic challenge. The absence of specific symptoms and signs during clinical examination often lead to underestimation of the severity and early surgical treatment. The purpose of this article is to review the clinical presentation of two patients with internal hernia, describe the clinical, biochemical and radiological findings, with emphasis on the L-lactate as an early serum marker of intestinal ischemia. CLINICAL CASES: Case 1: female, 44 years history of urolithiasis and 2 cesarean sections. Case 2: female, 86 y

[A case of small intestinal cancer in the upper intestine after pylorus-preserving pancreaticoduodenectomy].

We report a case of small intestinal cancer that arose in the upper intestine 16 years after pylorus-preserving pancreaticoduodenectomy( PPPD). An 84-year-old man, who had undergone PPPD for benign biliary tract disease 16 years previously, was found to have a primary small intestinal tumor in the upper intestine by upper gastrointestinal endoscopy, and primary intestinal cancer in the upper intestine was finally diagnosed. We performed partial resection of the upper small intestine and stomach and partial colectomy of the transverse colon to account for direct invasion. Histopathologically, t

Ascites drainage leading to intestinal adhesions at the mesentery of the small intestine with fatal outcome.

A common problem in patients with chronic liver diseases and liver cirrhosis is the development of ascites. First line therapy for ascites is the restriction of sodium intake and a diuretic treatment. Paracentesis is indicated in patients with large compromising volumes of ascites. In selected cases, permanent drainage of ascites over prolonged periods of time may be indicated. In the case presented here, a 66-year-old male patient, who was hospitalized with liver cirrhosis caused by alcoholic abuse, required permanent drainage of ascites. After three weeks of continuous ascites drainage, he d

High faecal calprotectin levels in intestinal tuberculosis are associated with granulomas in intestinal biopsies.

BACKGROUND: The diagnosis of intestinal tuberculosis (ITB) is sometimes difficult to establish and requires endoscopic investigation with biopsies for histopathological examination. This study aimed to evaluate calprotectin as a marker of inflammation in ITB. METHODS: Patients with ITB were prospectively recruited in Southern India from October 2009 until July 2012. Demographic, clinical, endoscopic and histological features were examined along with faecal calprotectin (FC), serum calprotectin (SC) and C-reactive protein (CRP). RESULTS: Thirty patients (median age 34.5 years, 19 men) were in

Effect of ozone on intestinal recovery following intestinal ischemia-reperfusion injury in a rat.

BACKGROUND: Growing evidence suggests that ozone (O3) protects the host against pathological conditions mediated by reactive oxygen species by increasing the activity of antioxidant enzymes. The purpose of the present study was to examine the effect of O3 on intestinal recovery and enterocyte turnover after intestinal ischemia-reperfusion (IR) injury in rats. METHODS: Male Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into four experimental groups: (1) sham rats underwent laparotomy; (2) sham-O3 rats underwent laparotomy and were treated with an ozone/oxygen mixture intraperitoneally and intraluminally (5

[Intestinal-brain axis. Neuronal and immune-inflammatory mechanisms of brain and intestine pathology].

Mutually directed connections between intestine and brain are implemented by endocrine, neural and immune systems and nonspecific natural immunity. Intestine micro flora as an active participant of intestine-brain axis not only influences intestine functions but also stimulates the development of CNS in perinatal period and interacts with higher nervous centers causing depression and cognitive disorders in pathology. A special role belongs to intestine microglia. Apart from mechanic (protective) and trophic functions for intestine neurons, glia implements neurotransmitter, immunologic, barrier

Single-pass intestinal perfusion to establish the intestinal permeability of model drugs in mouse.

The aim of the present work was to study the intestinal permeabilities (P(eff)) of five model drugs: furosemide, piroxicam, naproxen, ranitidine and amoxicillin in the in situ intestinal perfusion technique in mice and compare them with corresponding rat and human in vivo P(eff) values. The main experimental conditions were: mice CD1 30-35 g, test drug concentrations in perfusion experiments (the highest dose strength dissolved in 250 mL of PBS pH 6.2) and flow rate of 0.2 mL/min. The test compounds were assayed following a validated HPLC method. The effective permeability coefficients at stea

Intestinal Obstruction due to Complete Transmural Migration of a Retained Surgical Sponge into the Intestine.

A 56-year-old woman with a history of gynecological surgery for cervical cancer 18 years previously was referred to our hospital for colicky abdominal pain, nausea and vomiting. Intestinal obstruction was diagnosed by contrast-enhanced computed tomography (CT) which showed dilation of the small intestine and suggested obstruction in the terminal ileum. In addition, CT showed a thick-walled cavitary lesion communicating with the proximal jejunum. (18)F-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography showed abnormal uptake at the same location as the cavitary lesion revealed by CT. The patient u

Small intestine bacterial overgrowth does not correspond to intestinal inflammation in cystic fibrosis.

INTRODUCTION: Small intestine bacterial overgrowth (SIBO) has been reported in cystic fibrosis (CF) patients. However, the potential link to intestinal inflammation has not been studied so far. Therefore, we aimed to assess whether SIBO correlates with intestinal inflammation in CF patients. MATERIAL AND METHODS: As a preliminary study, we assessed whether calprotectin is detectable in sputum expectorated by 10 CF patients. Since significant immunoreactivity was documented, in the major study we have included exclusively CF subjects not expectorating sputum for at least two weeks. Fecal calpr

Diagnostic yield of double-balloon enteroscopy with intestinal juice analysis for intestinal strongyloidiasis.

Strongyloidiasis is relatively common in tropical and subtropical areas. Most patients with Strongyloides stercoralis hyperinfection are immunocompromised, most commonly from corticosteroids or human T-cell lymphoma virus type 1 (HTLV-1) infection. We encountered a patient with HTLV-1 infection accompanied by paralytic ileus, in whom strongyloidiasis in the duodenum and jejunum was disclosed by esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD) and double-balloon enteroscopy (DBE). Until the age of 7 years, he lived on Amami-Oshima Island, Japan, where both S. stercoralis and HTLV-1 are endemic. EGD and peroral

Disseminated mixed intestinal dysmotility (DMID): a new intestinal ganglion cell disorder?

We experienced two cases with disseminated HP and IND occurring with normal bowel in between (disseminated mixed intestinal dysmotility--DMID) and postulate whether it could be classified as a new intestinal motility disorder. Our cases, both boys, died at 3 and 7 months, respectively. Both had irregular stool passage, and abdominal distention with bilious vomiting since birth. On barium enema, both had rigid distal ileum and colon with narrow lumens, with dilated and atonic proximal ileum and jejunum. An ileostomy was created on days 3 and 2 of life, respectively, however, they did not functi

Pathogenic importance of intestinal hypermotility in NSAID-induced small intestinal damage in rats.

BACKGROUND/AIM: Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as indomethacin produce damage in the small intestine as a major adverse reaction. We examined the effect of various NSAIDs on intestinal motility and investigated the pathogenic importance of motility changes in the intestinal ulcerogenic response to indomethacin in rats. METHODS: Animals without fasting were given various NSAIDs (indomethacin 10 mg/kg, diclofenac 40 mg/kg, flurbiprofen 20 mg/kg, naproxen 40 mg/kg) s.c., and in the case of indomethacin, the following parameters were examined in the small intestine 24 h later;

Improvement in intestinal permeability precedes morphometric recovery of the small intestine in coeliac disease.

It is often difficult to assess small bowel recovery in adults with coeliac disease on a gluten-free diet (GFD). This prospective study compares changes in intestinal permeability with changes in intestinal biopsy at various intervals after commencing a GFD. Intestinal permeability was measured by lactulose/rhamnose absorption from 1 week to 24 months after commencing a GFD. Intestinal morphometry was measured by villus area, crypt length and mitotic count per crypt at diagnosis and after commencing a GFD. Median intestinal permeability values decreased from 0.47 (n = 35) at diagnosis to 0.25

Intestinal transit time in children with intestinal neuronal malformations mimicking Hirschsprung's disease.

A total of 106 consecutive children with intestinal neuronal malformations were included in a prospective study. The intestinal transit time was assessed using a modification of Hinton's method. The results of transit time studies, the associated specific histochemical findings, therapeutic procedures, and the clinical course on follow-up assessments over a mean period of 2.4 years were analysed. The intestinal transit time was prolonged in all 53 patients with aganglionosis and in 37 (69.8%) out of 53 children with other intestinal malformations. Eight out of 16 children with IND type B had a

Intestinal anaphylaxis induces Fos immunoreactivity in myenteric plexus of rat small intestine.

Fos immunohistochemistry was used to identify myenteric neurons activated as a consequence of intestinal anaphylaxis in Hooded-Lister rats sensitized to egg albumin (EA 10 micrograms ip). After incubation in test solutions, or after in vivo challenge, jejunal tissues were processed for immunohistochemistry with an anti-Fos antibody (1:500, TF161). The neuronal identity of the Fos-labeled nuclei was confirmed by double labeling with neuron-specific enclose (1:1,000). In in vitro studies, exposure of control tissue to 50 mM K(+)-Krebs-EA (2 x 10(-5) M) solutions significantly increased Fos immun

The effect of allopurinol pretreatment on intestinal hypoperfusion encountered after correction of intestinal volvulus.

After reversal of blood flow following a prolonged period of ischemia, blood flow returns for a few seconds and is reduced afterward. This is called "no-reflow phenomenon." Antioxidants such as allopurinol have been shown to prevent the occurrence of this phenomenon in organs other than the intestine. An experimental study was conducted to investigate the effect of allopurinol pretreatment on intestinal blood flow after correction of intestinal volvulus in rabbits. In group 1, baseline intestinal blood flow (IBF) was evaluated using radiolabeled red blood cells. In group 2, 720 degrees intesti
