Light parameters and iron ions regulate mass-independent fractionation via modulating degradation pathways of methylmercury.

Methylmercury (MeHg) is a neurotoxic pollutant threatening aquatic ecosystems and human health. Photodegradation is a key abiotic pathway for MeHg elimination in aquatic systems, yet its underlying mechanisms and controlling factors remain poorly understood. We investigated MeHg photodegradation in the presence of dissolved organic matter (DOM) under varying light conditions and iron ion concentrations. Our results demonstrate that the indirect pathway, mediated by reactive oxygen species (ROS), significantly contributes to MeHg degradation but yields negligible mass-independent fractionation …

A highly selective fluorescent probe for visualizing hazardous mercury ions in living cells and zebrafish.

In recent years, notorious heavy metal mercury pollutants severely threaten both human health and ecological security. Therefore, the development of simple, effective, and reliable fluorescent sensing tools for accurately monitoring mercury ions (Hg2+) levels is of great significance. In this work, a coumarin-derived fluorescent probe, named PQT, was designed and synthesized for the highly sensitive and selective detection of Hg2+. Upon addition of Hg2+, the PQT solution changed from yellow to colorless, accompanied by nearly complete quenching of its intensive fluorescence. More significantly…

Structural Characterization of Ettringite Synthesized in the Presence of Arsenate(V) and Chromate(VI) Ions.

Ettringite (Ca6[Al(OH)6]2(SO4)3⋅26H2O) is an important hydration product involved in the immobilization of oxyanion contaminants in cementitious systems; however, the structural effects of arsenate(V) and chromate(VI) incorporation remain poorly understood. This study investigates the influence of both oxyanions on the formation and structure of ettringite-based materials using X-ray diffraction (XRD) with Rietveld refinement and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR). Ettringite remained the dominant crystalline phase in all samples, with no detectable secondary crystalline compounds…

Mathematical modeling of the effects of potassium ions on the tumor immune system and virotherapy.

To understand how extracellular potassium ions influence both anti-tumor immunity and virotherapy in cancer progression, we construct two mathematical models informed by our experimental results. For the tumor immune system, our analysis shows a high concentration of extracellular potassium ions diminishes the killing rate of tumor cells by immune cells. Our model confirms that the stimulation coefficient of immune cells by tumor cells remains a crucial parameter in the presence of extracellular potassium ions, which largely controls the overall tumor growth. For virotherapy, we obtain a formu…

A Microdosimetric Dose Response Model for Monoenergetic Ions and Doses Relevant for Space Radiation Carcinogenesis.

The radiation environment in space consists of a complex mixture of particles and energies that are characteristically different from any natural Earth radiation source. Projections of space radiation cancer risk are obtained by scaling or adjusting epidemiological models derived from terrestrially exposed cohorts to account for differences in radiation quality, dose rate, and other factors. Radiation quality and dose-rate effects introduce significant uncertainty, thereby obfuscating risk communication and hindering the ability to evaluate the efficacy of mitigation strategies such as medical…

Unveiling co-acting effects of potassium and hydroxide ions on carbon dioxide reduction reaction selectivity.

The interfacial microenvironment plays a crucial role in influencing the absorption of important reaction intermediates and the resulting selectivity for carbon dioxide reduction reaction (CO2RR) (Xu et al., 2022) [1]. In this paper, the influence effects of potassium and hydroxide ions on CO2RR of Cu-based catalysts are comprehensively investigated using in-situ Raman spectroscopy and theoretical calculation. The results showed that potassium ions improved the binding strength of CO adsorbates (COad) intermediates on active sites, which is conducive to C-C coupling or further reaction. The pr…

A highly selective indole-based sensor for Zn2+, Cu2+, and Al3+ ions with multifunctional applications.

A wide range of chemosensors has been developed for detecting specific metal ions at trace levels, attracting considerable research interest. However, despite the significant role of indole-based molecules in the biological domain, only a few chemosensors incorporating this moiety have been reported. In this work, a novel indole-based receptor [R = (Z)-3-((((1H-indol-4-yl)methyl)imino)methyl)benzene-1,2-diol], was synthesized and characterized using single-crystal X-ray diffraction, NMR, IR, and ESI-MS techniques. Sensing studies conducted in a CH3CN/H2O (7 : 3, v/v) solvent system demonstrate…

Pyridine-hydrazone-based charge-transfer probe for detecting Cu2+ and Co2+ ions in aqueous solutions.

In the field of environmental monitoring, there remain considerable challenges regarding the development of selective chemosensors with high sensitivity for detecting transition metal ions in aqueous media. In this study, we prepared and investigated 1,3-bis((2-((E)-(2-(pyridin-2-yl)hydrazineylidene)methyl)-1H-pyrrol-1-yl)methyl) benzene as a pyridine-hydrazone-based probe (receptor A) for the selective detection of metal ions. Upon interacting with Cu2+ and Co2+ ions, the probe responded with significant optical changes, thereby facilitating simple ion detection. The ultraviolet-visible absor…

Influence of metal ions on the economic parameters of mulberry silkworm Bombyx mori (Lepidoptera: Bombycidae).

Micronutrients contribute significantly to homeostasis at the cellular, physiological, and biological interface of silkworm growth and development. The silkworm cocoon traits are highly physiologically dependent, controlled by the optimum availability of micronutrient concentrations. Keeping this in view, two micronutrients, i.e., copper and iron, were investigated to understand their role in economic traits in popular bivoltine silkworm double-hybrid FC1 × FC2. The mulberry leaves were bio-fortified with copper and iron in the form of copper chloride and ferric chloride with concentrations of…

Exposure to Airborne PM2.5 Water-Soluble Inorganic Ions Induces a Wide Array of Reproductive Toxicity.

Water-soluble inorganic ions (WSIIs, primarily NH4+, SO42-, and NO3-) are major components in ambient PM2.5, but their reproductive toxicity remains largely unknown. An animal study was conducted where parental mice were exposed to PM2.5 WSIIs or clean air during preconception and the gestational period. After delivery, all maternal and offspring mice lived in a clean air environment. We assessed reproductive organs, gestation outcome, birth weight, and growth trajectory of the offspring mice. In parallel, we collected birth weight and placenta transcriptome data from 150 mother-infant pairs f…

Novel metal-organic framework hydrogel for enhanced selective removal of uranyl ions from nuclear wastewater.

The efficient removal of uranium (U(Ⅵ)) from nuclear wastewater presents a significant challenge due to the high concentrations of uranium and various interfering ions. In this study, we developed and used metal-organic framework hydrogel (MOFH) as a highly efficient adsorbent for uranium removal. The MOFH, synthesized with ferrocyanides and functional groups (Fe(Ⅱ)-CN-Fe(Ⅲ), OH, -COOH, and -NH2), exhibited good chemical stability, large separation capacity, and high selectivity. The hydrogel's three-dimensional network, crosslinked with chitosan and alginic acid, significantly enhanced uraniu…

Purification of gamma-cyclodextrin via selective coordination with potassium ions to form metal-organic frameworks.

Efficient purification of gamma-cyclodextrin (γ-CD) is always challenging due to its structural similarity to other CDs and low crystallinity in water. In addressing this issue, an approach was proposed based on the formation mechanism of cyclodextrin metal-organic frameworks (CD-MOFs). This method involved the selective coordination of CDs mixture with potassium ions in water, facilitated by ethanol-induced crystallization, leading to the purification of γ-CD. The results showed that potassium ions enhanced γ-CD crystallization, and ethanol was crucial to selectively coordinating potassium io…

DNA Double-Strand Break Repair Kinetics after Exposure to Photons and Ions: A Systematic Review.

This study offers a review of published data on DNA double strand break (DSB) repair kinetics after exposure to ionizing radiation. By compiling a database, which currently includes 285 DNA DSB repair experiments utilizing both photons and ions, we investigate the impact of distinct experimental parameters on the kinetics of DNA DSB repair. Methodological differences and inconsistencies in reporting make the comparison of data generated by different research groups challenging. Nevertheless, by implementing filtering criteria, we can compare repair kinetics obtained with normal and tumor cells…

An anionic two dimensional covalent organic framework from tetratopic borate centres pillared by lithium ions.

Non-covalent interactions play an important role for the framework formation of two-dimensional covalent organic frameworks. Until now, π-π interactions and hydrogen bonding are the main reported forces facilitating the stacking of framework layers. Here, we present a two-dimensional anionic covalent organic framework based on tetratopic borate linkages, where layers are connected by ionic interactions between the linkage site and counter cations. The crystalline covalent organic framework is accessed through the formation of an amorphous borate-based polymer and subsequent solvothermal treatm…

Changes in the relaxivity of water-organic solvent miscible systems: Hidden forces beyond metal ions.

BACKGROUND: The relaxivity of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) contrast agents is primarily attributed to metal ions such as gadolinium (Gd) and iron. However, the impact of organic solutes on relaxivity, particularly through alterations in water molecule dynamics, has not been thoroughly investigated. This research was aimed to explore how organic solutes affect the relaxivities of water and Gd-based contrast agents (GBCAs), potentially revealing new aspects for the development of contrast agents. PURPOSE: To investigate the effects of different proportions of water-soluble organic solvents …
