Sociodemographic Factors and Awareness of Consanguineous Marriages in Rural Northern Karnataka: A Cross-Sectional Study.

Background Consanguineous marriages, defined as unions between closely related individuals, are influenced by a complex interplay of cultural, social, economic, religious, and demographic factors. These marriages are prevalent among communities such as Hindus, Muslims, Jews, Buddhists, Christians, and Parsis in Southern and Western Asia, with significant regional variations within India. There is a lack of appropriate decision-making among women in consanguineous unions, particularly those with a low level of educational attainment, which leads to an increase in the prevalence of consanguineou…

Gonorrhea, a current disease with ancient roots: from the remedies of the past to future perspectives.

Gonorrhea can be traced back to the earliest records of the human race even if Albert Neisser first described gonococcus in 1879. The Romans, Jews and Arabs all have documents referring to gonorrhea and each society had their own description of symptoms and treatment. The Roman physician Galen in 130 AD described the disease as an "involuntary escape of semen". The word itself derives from the Greek, meaning "the flow of seed". Gonorrhea is currently the second most commonly notifiable sexually transmitted infection (STI) reported to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), second onl…

Are there disparities in cerebral sinus venous thrombosis between the Arab and Jewish populations in Israel - a multicenter cohort study?

OBJECTIVE: Cerebral sinus venous thrombosis (CSVT) is a rare stroke subtype and data regarding the impact of ethnicity on its presentation and outcomes are limited. METHODS: The Israeli CSVT cohort, which includes databases from six academic medical centers, was retrospectively studied. Demographics, clinical presentations, risk factors, radiological findings, and outcome parameters were compared between Jewish and Arab Israeli patients. RESULTS: The study included 554 patients with CSVT, of whom 71 (13%) were of Arab ethnicity and 483 (87%) were Jewish. Arab patients were younger (mean age

Late-Life Migration to Israel as an Ambivalent Process: Identity, Belonging, and Adaptation Among Older French Immigrants in Israel.

Migration in later life is a growing global phenomenon, raising important questions about identity, belonging, and adaptation in old age. This study explores the experiences of older adults from France who migrated to Israel (i.e. undertaking Aliyah) after the age of 65, focusing on how they make sense of this transition within the context of ageing. Using an interpretative phenomenological approach, this qualitative study draws on in-depth interviews with twelve participants in Israel (ten women and two men aged 70 and older). Rather than treating motivations, challenges, and well-being as se

On the Links Between Exposure to Traumatic Events in Religious Contexts, Post-Traumatic Stress Symptoms, and a Positive Perception of God's Image Among Jewish Lesbians, Gays and Bisexuals in Israel.

This study constitutes one of the first investigations aiming to examine the association between traumatic experiences within religious settings and symptoms of post-traumatic stress among religious lesbians, gays, and bisexuals. Furthermore, the study tested whether the anticipated positive link between those traumatic experiences and post-traumtic stress is influenced by a positive perception of God's image. The sample consisted of 146 Israeli Jewish lesbians, gays, and bisexuals who professed a belief in God or demonstrated religious inclinations either presently or in the past. They comple

Delineation of the phenotype of MED17-related disease in Caucasus-Jewish families.

BACKGROUND: and Purpose: Postnatal progressive microcephaly, with seizures and brain atrophy (OMIM # 613668) is a rare disorder caused by a homozygous founder missense mutation c.1112T>C (p.L371P) in the MED17 gene on chromosome 11 that was identified in 2010 in Caucasus Jewish families. The present study aimed to delineate the phenotype and developmental outcomes in patients diagnosed with this mutation to date. METHODS: We conducted a medical charts review to collect the clinical, laboratory and neuroimaging findings in patients from several unrelated families of Caucasus-Jewish origin, who

SMPD1 mutations, activity, and α-synuclein accumulation in Parkinson's disease.

BACKGROUND: SMPD1 (acid-sphingomyelinase) variants have been associated with Parkinson's disease in recent studies. The objective of this study was to further investigate the role of SMPD1 mutations in PD. METHODS: SMPD1 was sequenced in 3 cohorts (Israel Ashkenazi Jewish cohort, Montreal/Montpellier, and New York), including 1592 PD patients and 975 controls. Additional data were available for 10,709 Ashkenazi Jewish controls. Acid-sphingomyelinase activity was measured by a mass spectrometry-based assay in the New York cohort. α-Synuclein levels were measured in vitro following CRISPR/Cas9-

Perceptions of childhood immunization in a minority community: qualitative study.

OBJECTIVE: To assess reasons for low uptake of immunization amongst orthodox Jewish families. DESIGN: Qualitative interviews with 25 orthodox Jewish mothers and 10 local health care workers. SETTING: The orthodox Jewish community in North East London. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Identification of views on immunization in the orthodox Jewish community. RESULTS: In a community assumed to be relatively insulated from direct media influence, word of mouth is nevertheless a potent source of rumours about vaccination dangers. The origins of these may lie in media scares that contribute to anxieties a

CDX2 polymorphisms, RNA expression, and risk of colorectal cancer.

In adult mammals, CDX2 acts as a transcription factor and is expressed in intestinal epithelial cells. Down-regulation of CDX2 is frequently observed in colorectal cancer, suggesting its loss may cause dedifferentiation of gastrointestinal epithelial cells. However, it is not clear whether inherited variants of CDX2 are associated with risk of colorectal cancer. Using epidemiologic data and tumors from a population-based case-control study in Israel, we identified novel single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) by resequencing 35 cases, compared genotype and haplotype frequencies in 455 matched p

Heterozygosity for the BLM(Ash) mutation and cancer risk.

Bloom syndrome is an autosomal recessive disorder whose characteristics include an increased risk for many types of cancers. In contrast to the homozygous mutations of Bloom syndrome, heterozygous carriers of BLM mutations may be at increased risk for developing colorectal cancer. We have screened 2,333 Jewish individuals, including 497 individuals with colorectal cancer, 125 with adenomatous polyps, 767 with noncolorectal cancers and 944 controls for the truncating BLM(Ash) founder mutation. The BLM(Ash) mutation was carried by 0.80% of individuals with colorectal neoplasia, 0.87% of those wi

Diabetes among Bedouins in the Negev: the transition from a rare to a highly prevalent condition.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have shown a low prevalence of diabetes and other cardiovascular risk factors among Bedouins living in the Negev desert. New evidence suggests that diabetes is becoming highly prevalent. OBJECTIVES: To estimate the prevalence of diabetes in the town of Rahat, describe the cardiovascular risk factor profile and therapeutic modalities for diabetes and related conditions in this population, and compare these findings with those in the Jewish population. METHODS: A complete record review of all known diabetic individuals aged 35 and older registered at the Rahat Clin

Accidental out-of-hospital delivery as an independent risk factor for perinatal mortality.

OBJECTIVE: To determine maternal characteristics and perinatal outcomes of unattended out-of-hospital deliveries. STUDY DESIGN: A population-based study including all singleton deliveries between 1988 and 1999. Maternal characteristics and pregnancy outcomes of accidental out-of-hospital births were compared with those of women who delivered in the hospital. Multiple logistic regression analysis was performed to investigate independent risk factors for out-of-hospital deliveries. Another model was constructed to assess the independent risk of out-of-hospital delivery for perinatal mortality.

Genotypic diagnosis of familial Mediterranean fever (FMF) using new microsatellite markers: example of two extensive non-Ashkenazi Jewish pedigrees.

Familial Mediterranean fever is an autosomal recessive disease characterised by multiple attacks of serosal inflammation in the absence of treatment. In the absence of timely diagnosis, renal amyloidosis is a life threatening complication. The diagnosis is often missed because no specific test is available. Early colchicine treatment prevents attacks and renal complications. The FMF gene (MEF) has been mapped to chromosome 16p 13.3 but has not yet been identified. We compared the suitability of a series of microsatellite markers (four of them were new) and propose the routine use of seven of t

Persons of lesser values--moral argument and the "final solution".

For many persons, 'Holocaust-abomination' is a fixed point on their moral compass: if anything can be evil, it was. Yet at least one of the justifications deployed by its perpetrators (the eugenics argument) involves widely-held values concerning human health and procreation. Hence persons endorsing many current activities based on those values (e.g. genetic counselling) have been charged with being on a morally deplorable slippery slope. This paper sketches the necessary structure of a moral position capable of consistently embracing those values without placing its occupants on that slippery

The circumcision controversy: an update.

One constructive feature has come out of all of the circumcision controversy. It has made us aware that neonatal circumcision is not a simple procedure and that it should not be regarded as "routine." It is a surgical procedure and it should be taught as one. The authors of this article wrote a review article on circumcision in 1981 and Dr. Grossman has recently published a book designed to teach proper circumcision technique, and to familiarize the operator with the common congenital anomalies as well as the prevention and treatment of the complications of circumcision. The advocacy of neonat

Primary structure of an amyloid prealbumin variant in familial polyneuropathy of Jewish origin.

The complete amino acid sequence of three related amyloid proteins (Mr 14,000, 10,000, and 5,000) derived from tissues of a Jewish patient who suffered from a variant of familial polyneuropathic amyloidosis was determined. The protein, which contains 127 residues, is identical to a human serum prealbumin subunit. Only one amino acid substitution, glycine for threonine, was detected at position 49, where enzymatic cleavage occurred, yielding Mr 5,000 and 10,000 fragments which represent the amino terminus (residues 1-48) and carboxyl terminus (residues 49-127) of the molecule, respectively.
