Differences between µCT-imaging and conventional CT for the diagnosis of possible diseases of the middle and inner cat ear.

The aim of this study was to check the relevance of using in-vivo micro computed tomography (µCT) for the diagnosis of possible diseases of the middle and inner ear of the cat. Therefore, on the one hand, differences of the detail detectability between the two imaging methods conventional computed tomography (cCT) and in-vivo µCT were analyzed. Six healthy cat ears were dissected and scanned several times and the obtained images were compared with each other. On the other hand, histological slices of all ears were prepared and pictures of defined anatomical structures were taken and compared

Hydrogen-rich water ameliorates rat placental stress induced by water restriction.

Dehydration is one of the intrauterine abnormalities that could lead to fetal growth retardation and to increase the risk of a variety of adult diseases later in life. This study were to determine the impact of hydrogen-rich water (HRW) supplementation on placental angiotensin II type 1 receptor and placental oxidative stress induced by water restriction. Pregnant Wistar rat were randomly assigned to one of the three groups (n =12 per group). In control group, pure water and food were supplied ad libitum. Water restriction group and HRW group were respectively given pure water and HRW with fre

Human blood-labyrinth barrier model to study the effects of cytokines and inflammation.

Hearing loss is one of the 10 leading causes of disability worldwide. No drug therapies are currently available to protect or restore hearing. Inner ear auditory hair cells and the blood-labyrinth barrier (BLB) are critical for normal hearing, and the BLB between the systemic circulation and stria vascularis is crucial for maintaining cochlear and vestibular homeostasis. BLB defects are associated with inner ear diseases that lead to hearing loss, including vascular malformations, inflammation, and Meniere's disease (MD). Antibodies against proteins in the inner ear and cytokines in the cochle

A 14-year nationwide epidemiological analysis of delayed endolymphatic hydrops in Japan.

BACKGROUND: Delayed endolymphatic hydrops (DEH) is an inner ear disease that causes recurrent vertigo in the ipsilateral ear or fluctuating hearing in the contralateral ear due to endolymphatic hydrops secondary to preceding deafness. There are few reports of large, multicentre studies investigating the clinical-epidemiological characteristics of DEH. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to clarify the characteristics of DEH in Japan. METHODS: Clinical data on 662 patients with DEH were analysed by nationwide, multicentre surveys conducted by the Peripheral Vestibular Disorders Research Group of Japa

Vestibular-evoked myogenic potentials.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This article reviews the literature on vestibular-evoked myogenic potential testing, a short latency electromyogram evoked by high acoustic stimuli and recorded via surface electrodes over the sternocleidomastoid muscle. Applications and refinements of this technique are described for different pathologies and in adults and children. RECENT FINDINGS: Various techniques for electrode placement have been described to elicit a vestibular-evoked myogenic potential response, which has been clinically investigated in normal individuals, under pathological conditions, and in adult

[The acute vestibular paralysis (author's transl)].

Acute vestibular paralysis may not be considered as a nosologic entity but as a syndrome. Symptomatology (vertigo, spontaneous and provoked vestibular nystagmus, absence of cochlear signs) shows an uniform picture. The results of the caloric test as well as the nystagmic responses induced by galvanic stimulation and the development of central vestibular compensation however indicate that the site of the lesion is not only confined to the labyrinth but may also occur at the level of the peripheral neuron or even the vestibular nuclei. Etiology and pathology are still vague. Our own clinical obs

Subjective Visual Horizontal Determination During Otolith Stimulation by Eccentric Rotation in Conservatively Treated Meniere's Disease.

Peripheral vestibular equilibrium disorders may originate in various parts of the labyrinth or of the vestibular nerve. Traditionally, the function of the lateral semicircular canals has been assessed by caloric irrigation and has been interpreted (sometimes falsely) as demonstrating a vestibular nerve lesion. The vertical semicircular canals are not assessed easily. Caloric testing with the head in various positions is not very helpful, but the canals may be tested in pairs using specific rotational techniques. Often, the otolith organs, detecting linear acceleration forces, are forgotten as

[Correction of vestibular disorders in patients with otitis media purulenta chronica complicated by labyrinthitis].

A vestibulogic examination was made in 66 patients with otitis media purulenta chronica complicated with labyrinthitis. The patients were divided into two groups: group 1 received surgical treatment in an acute period of labyrinthitis, group 2 was treated conservatively with delayed operation. The patients were examined at admission, 2 weeks, 1, 3, 6 and 12 months after the treatment. It was found that compensation of the vestibular function in group 1 took place 6 months after temporal bone surgery, in group 2-9 months after delayed operation, i.e. 1 years after hospitalization.

The pathology of peripheral vestibular disorders in the elderly.

We describe a clinical classification of vertigo commonly seen in the elderly and caused by peripheral vestibular disorders. The classification includes inducible transient vertigo and noninducible protracted vertigo. The peripheral vestibular disorder includes abnormalities of sensory, neural, and mechanical structures and is often asymmetric. Determination of the pathogenesis of these disorders is often speculative. Pathogenesis may include degenerative, infectious, neoplastic, and vascular insults to the vestibular labyrinth.

Surgical treatment of long-term sensorineural hearing loss due to labyrinthine fistula.

Perilymphatic fistula, usually in the round or oval window, causes a variety of symptoms, including sensorineural hearing loss. Surgical repair of these fistulas has resulted in restoration of hearing in some cases. It has been suggested that surgery must be performed within 2 months of the trauma if improvement in hearing is to occur. This paper presents the case of a patient whose fistula and resulting hearing loss had persisted ten years before surgical repair. Restoration of normal hearing and discrimination of speech occurred in the ear which had previously presented a severe sensorineura

An experimental model for the study of endolymphatic hydrops in sharks: implications for the clinician.

In recent years, attention has focused on the role of the endolymphatic sac (ELS) and the endolymphatic duct (ELD) in the pathogenesis of endolymphatic hydrops (ELH). Changes have been noted surgically and radiographically by others in the ELS and ELD in patients with ELH. This report summarizes the development of a shark model with which to study the pathophysiology of ELH. The background material and overall results of anatomic, histopathologic, and ultrastructural studies using the model are presented. Possible implications for the clinical handling of ELH as a result of this work is emphas

Analysis of post-market adverse events of tafamidis base on the FDA adverse event reporting system.

Tafamidis is the world's first and only oral drug approved to treat the rare disease transthyretin amyloid cardiomyopathy (ATTR-CM). Medicines are known to have different adverse reactions during the course of treatment. However, the current limited clinical studies did not identify significant adverse drug reactions to tafamidis. Tafamidis has been on the market for 5 years now, a large number of adverse drug event (ADE) reports with tafamidis as the primary suspected drug have been reported in the United Food and Drug Administration's adverse event reporting system (FAERS). We retrieved 8170

Cytokines and Inflammation in Meniere Disease.

Meniere disease (MD) is a rare set of conditions associated with the accumulation of endolymph in the cochlear duct and the vestibular labyrinth with a decrease of endocochlear potential. It is considered a chronic inflammatory disorder of the inner ear with a multifactorial origin. The clinical syndrome includes several groups of patients with a core phenotype: sensorineural hearing loss, episodes of vertigo, and tinnitus with a non-predictable course. Genetic factors and the innate immune response seem to play a central role in the pathophysiology of the condition. Autoimmune MD should be di

[Autoimmune hearing loss and a chance of its development in children: literature review and own observations].

Autoimmune sensorineural hearing loss (AiSNHL) is an uncommon auditory disorder characterized by rapidly progressive bilateral hearing loss and a positive clinical response to treatment with corticosteroids and cytostatics. The prevalence of the disease in the adult population is less than 1% among all cases of subacute and permanent sensorineural hearing loss (precise data are unknown), it is even rarer in children. AiSNHL can be primary (isolated, organ-specific) or secondary (manifestation of another systemic autoimmune disease). The pathogenesis of AiSNHL is based on the proliferation of a

Sudden bilateral hearing impairment in vertebrobasilar occlusive disease.

BACKGROUND: Bilateral hearing impairment is rare in vertebrobasilar occlusive disease. SUMMARY OF COMMENT: Between 1986 and 1991, we encountered seven patients (four men, three women; median age, 61 years; range, 46-71 years) who had sudden bilateral hearing impairment among 503 patients with vertebrobasilar occlusive disease. The main initial neurological symptoms were sudden bilateral hearing impairment, tinnitus, and vertigo. Acute labyrinthitis or Ménière's disease was the initial diagnosis until subsequent brain stem or cerebellar signs appeared. Brain stem auditory evoked potentials wer

Viral infection and the inner ear.

The work of Japanese research committees on the relation of viral infection to sudden deafness and acute profound deafness is briefly introduced. The criteria for making a diagnosis of sudden deafness and mumps deafness are described. A new method of detecting IgM antibody to mumps virus was developed in research done for one of the committees. Use of this method revealed that sudden deafness in 1 out of 39 patients was due to mumps virus. Experimental viral labyrinthitis was produced in guinea pigs using herpes simplex virus (types 1 and 2) and guinea pig cytomegalovirus (GPCMV). Histopatholo
