Pseudofolliculitis barbae is a common skin disorder of the beard area that is characterized by the presence of inflammatory follicular papules due to terminal hair shafts re-entering the epidermis. Postinflammatory hyperpigmentation and scarring often occur with pseudofolliculitis barbae. Such skin changes can lead to cosmetic disfigurement and be of great concern to the patient. We report a case of pseudofolliculitis barbae and hirsutism with associated postinflammatory hyperpigmentation in an African-American woman who was effectively treated with the diode laser.

Chronic dacryocystitis is due to an obstruction in the nasolacrimal duct, with subsequent infection of the lacrimal sac. The goal of surgery is to reestablish intranasal drainage of the lacrimal sac. Classic dacryocystorhinostomy (DCR) requires an external incision and drilling through the lacrimal bone into the middle meatus. Laser-assisted uvulopalatoplasty (LAUP) is an effective surgical procedure for treating habitual snoring. It is performed under local anesthesia as an outpatient procedure and consists of enlarging the oropharyngeal air space and restructuring the uvula, velum, and pharyngeal pillars. We used LAUP in 112 patients with upper airway resistance syndrome (UARS) (Lipman grade II) over the last three years and achieve a care rate of 87.5%.

From 11/1994 to 4/1997 we enrolled 140 patients with diffuse CAD refractory to maximum antianginal therapy who are not candidates for PTCA or CABG for transmyocardial laser revascularisation (TMLR). Of these patients aged 63.5 +/- 15 years, 98 had coronary 3-vessel disease, and the average left ventricular ejection fraction was 44%. Eleven out of these 140 patients died from different reasons (pneumonia, myocardial infarction, septicemia). 13 patients with pyogenic granuloma were treated with a CO2 laser using the continuous wave laser in all cases and using additionally the ultrapulsed laser in 7 patients. The pyogenic granuloma was removed in all patients in one session. Side effects included transient erythema in 8 patients and scars in 2 cases. There was no hypo- or hyperpigmentation. The use of the CO2 laser is a fast and bloodless way to treat pyogenic granuloma with slight side effects and is an elegant alternative to standard approaches.

Forty-six patients with infiltrating supraglottic carcinoma were treated prospectively for cure between 1986 and 1992 with transoral laser resection of the primary. Nine primaries were classified as T1, and 37 as T2. Thirty-three had staged unilateral or bilateral neck dissections, and 16 had postoperative radiotherapy. Hysteroscopic resection of an intrauterine septum may benefit patients suffering from infertility or recurrent pregnancy loss. A partial or complete uterine septum can be easily resected using a Nd-YAG laser. If present, the vaginal septum may also be removed during the same procedure. The reproductive outcome of women treated by operative hysteroscopy for an intrauterine septum is reviewed. To avoid pregnancy in a non-communicating rudimentary horn, the removal of the horn and the homolateral tube may be performed by either bipolar coagulation or a CO2 laser.

OBJECTIVE: This study was performed to evaluate safety and efficacy of laser prostatectomy in the treatment of symptomatic benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH).
METHODS: Neodymium:yttrium-aluminum-garnet (YAG) visual laser ablation of the prostate was performed in 43 patients (mean age 66 +/- 11.5 years) with BPH. The mean prostatic volume was 44.7 +/- 19.7 ml. A right-angle, side-firing laser fiber (Lasersonics Ultraline) and a neodymium:YAG laser generator (Hercules 5060) were used.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the efficacy of an author-modified LAUP technique using the principles of UPPP surgery. This new one-stage method of LAUP is described in detail.
