Type A behavior as a general risk factor for physical disorder.

A behavior pattern characterized by excessive competitiveness, impatience, hostility, and time urgency, known as Type A, has typically been investigated as a risk factor for coronary heart disease. The present paper evaluates the Type A pattern as a general risk factor for a wide variety of physical disorders. Research on Type A as a moderator of the effects of life stress on health is also reviewed. When Type A or physical health is measured with objective indicators, Type A does not emerge as a general risk factor for illness, with the following exceptions: Type A's are more likely to have a

Life stress, chronic subclinical symptoms and vulnerability to clinical depression.

Prospective enquiries of the role of social factors in the aetiology of depression are faced with the problem of who to exclude from the enquiry in terms of psychiatric symptomatology present at first contact. With this problem in mind the role of subclinical symptoms among women not cases of depression has been examined in terms of their relation with a subsequent onset of caseness depression. Psychosocial factors of particular importance in the development of such depression were low self-esteem, marked long-term difficulties and severe life events arising out of (or 'matching') these diffic

Psychosocial predictors of outcome in subjects with untreated depressive disorder.

Untreated community volunteers (n = 66) with a significant reactive or neurotic depressive disorder were assessed at interview to determine predictors of improvement at 6 and at 20 weeks. The degree to which subjects improved by 6 weeks could be predicted by their pattern of improvement one week after initial interview and more definitely at the third week. Key baseline predictors of improvement both at 6 and at 20 week were the break-up of an intimate relationship in the preceding 12 months and weight loss, replicating findings in a study of depressive patients receiving psychiatric assessmen

Vulnerability to stress among women with in utero diethylstilbestrol (DES) exposed daughters.

In utero exposure to diethylstilbestrol (DES) was initially linked to vaginal-cervical cancer and subsequently to reproductive difficulties. These unanticipated and ongoing health risks to female offspring may constitute a chronic source of stress for DES mothers. We interviewed 60 mothers of exposed daughters and 30 acquaintance controls. Two hypotheses were tested in regard to DES mothers: DES discovery and its aftermath have a direct, long-term, negative effect on psychological health and the DES experience intensifies the negative psychological effects of other adverse life circumstances.

The elderly at risk: a critical examination of commonly identified risk groups.

This study assessed the nature and extent of the risk or disadvantage for 11 subcategories of the elderly population usually referred to as risk groups. Interviews with 619 over-60-year-olds living in Aberdeen were used to score the ;personal resources' for coping with difficulties-health, psychological, activity, confidence, support, material resources. Risk profiles have been drawn up and these show substantial variation in both the nature and extent of risk or disadvantage between the groups.Of the 11 groups, we concluded that the isolated, the childless and the never married are probably t

Sudden unexpected death in women: biologic and psychosocial origins.

The relationship of the risk of sudden death from arteriosclerotic heart disease to biologic and psychosocial factors was studied retrospectively in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, in 80 white women who died from arteriosclerotic heart disease during March, 1977-October, 1978, and in 80 age-matched neighborhood controls. All cases of sudden death in white women aged 25-64 years who died outside the hospital within 24 hours of onset of symptoms were ascertained. The overall autopsy rate was 63%. Detailed post-mortem examinations were conducted on 42 of 80 sudden cardiac cases. Cases were more o

A case-control study of hypertensive women in a post-disaster community: Wyoming Valley, Pennsylvania.

Among 396 female flood victims participating in a five-year post-disaster survey, 31 cases were identified who developed hypertension during that time period. A case-control study of hypertension was carried out utilizing age and ponderal index as matching criteria. The purpose of the study was to assess risk factors for hypertension associated with the early recovery period. Pairwise matching yielded 29 case-control pairs for analysis. Such factors as property loss, financial difficulties, physical work, use of alcohol, and perceived distress--all associated with the recovery period--were sig

"Getting ready for the adult world": how adults with spinal muscular atrophy perceive and experience healthcare, transition and well-being.

BACKGROUND: Spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) has profound implications across a lifetime for people with the condition and their families. Those affected need long-term multidisciplinary medical and supportive care to maintain functional mobility, independence and quality of life. Little is known about how adults with SMA experience healthcare, or the components of care perceived as important in promoting well-being. The purpose of this study was to use qualitative research methodology to explore the lived experiences of healthcare and wellbeing of adults with SMA. Purposive sampling was used to

Understanding life experiences of people affected by Crohn's disease in Spain. A phenomenological approach.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: People affected by Crohn's disease must adapt their lives to their new chronic condition, and therefore, understanding such experience can be helpful in planning effective interventions for the affected ones. The aim of this study was to gain an insight into such experience and how they adapted in different areas of their lives, particularly in a family-centred culture such as the Spanish one. METHOD: A descriptive phenomenological study was conducted through in-depth interviews to 19 people diagnosed of Crohn's disease in the province of Alicante (Spain). Once the

Early marriage, rape, child prostitution, and related factors determining the psychosocial effects severity of child sexual abuse in Ethiopia.

This study was aimed at identifying factors that determine the psychosocial effects severity of child sexual abuse. Data were collected from 318 female children in Ethiopia using the Children's Impact of Traumatic Events Scale-Revised and the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale. The results revealed that respondents who survived rape and child prostitution were more symptomatic than those who were married early. Respondents for whom less time had elapsed since their first experience of abuse demonstrated a significantly higher level of post-traumatic stress disorder symptoms, negative reactions by oth

Regret resolution, aging, and adapting to loss.

Both theory and empirical evidence suggest that people who have unresolved regrets experience lower levels of well-being than do those who resolve their regrets. In this study, the authors examined the role of regret resolution during bereavement by assessing whether (a) regret resolution would aid in adapting to the death of a loved one and (b) older adults would be more successful at resolving their bereavement-related regrets than would younger adults. Mixed models were run with longitudinal data from an age-heterogeneous sample of 147 men and women who were eventually bereaved after provid

Traumatic and socially stressful life events among persons with social anxiety disorder.

This study examined the frequency of reexperiencing, avoidance, and hyperarousal symptoms most often associated with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) among 45 persons with social anxiety disorder and 30 nonanxious controls in response to an extremely stressful social event (which did not satisfy DSM-IV's PTSD Criterion A). Avoidance and hyperarousal in response to reminders of socially stressful events were common among patients; more than one-third would have met criteria for PTSD if these events satisfied DSM-IV PTSD Criterion A. Frequency of this PTSD-like symptom pattern did not differ

Life Course Adversity and Prior Miscarriage in a Pregnancy Cohort.

BACKGROUND: Prior studies indicate associations between preconception adversities and risk of miscarriage, but few have considered type (e.g., financial, substance use, abuse) or timing (e.g., childhood, adulthood) of adversities. We examined relationships between life course adversities in multiple domains and probability of miscarriage. METHODS: Data came from women with at least one previous pregnancy in the Pregnancy Outcomes and Community Health (1998-2004) study (n = 2,106). Life course adversities in domains of abuse/witnessing violence, loss of someone close, economic hardship, and su

Stressful life events and lifestyle factors are associated with elevated peripheral TNF-α levels in adults with depression without physical diseases.

BACKGROUND: Tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) is a key mediator in the inflammatory mechanisms of depression, yet its peripheral levels and contributors remain unclear in patients with depression without comorbid physical diseases. This study aimed to compare peripheral TNF-α levels between healthy controls and individuals with depression without physical diseases, and to investigate the associations of stressful life events and modifiable lifestyle factors with peripheral TNF-α levels. METHOD: Participants were derived from the Depression Cohort in China study. Adults aged 18-65 years were

Racial/Ethnic Differences in Women's Life Event Exposure Across Midlife.

OBJECTIVE: Stressful life events are associated with poorer physical, cognitive, and mental health. Examining life events trends across midlife illustrates normative experiences of stress in a critical life period for intervention and disease prevention. Further, there is a critical need for research with racially/ethnically diverse samples to identify differences in life event exposure, as they may relate to later health disparities. METHOD: Annual life event reports were analyzed from 3,066 White, Black, Hispanic, Chinese, and Japanese women in the Study of Women's Health Across the Nation.

Childhood adversity increases vulnerability for behavioral symptoms and immune dysregulation in women with breast cancer.

Women respond differentially to the stress-associated with breast cancer diagnosis and treatment, with some women experiencing more intense and/or sustained behavioral symptoms and immune dysregulation than others. Childhood adversity has been identified to produce long-term dysregulation of stress response systems, increasing reactivity to stressors encountered during adulthood. This study determined whether childhood adversity increased vulnerability for more intense and sustained behavioral symptoms (fatigue, perceived stress, and depressive symptoms), poorer quality of life, and greater im

Biographical disruption, abruption and repair in the context of motor neurone disease.

Concepts of biographical disruption and repair have been widely applied to chronic illness, but not terminal illness. This paper examines the relevance of these concepts to motor neurone disease (MND), a progressive neurological condition characterised by loss of mobility, speech and ability to breathe or swallow. Survival is usually between two and five years, and some die within a few months. The condition thus lies at the boundary between chronic and terminal illness. Narrative interviews were conducted with 35 people living with MND and 11 family carers; analysis explored how people constr

[Patients' opinions about the reasons for their heart attacks in the context of their health belief models--a preliminary report].

The importance of psychological factors in Myocardial Infarction (MI) is well documented. The aim of the study was to define a relationship between the perception of the reasons for MI and real health activity of the sufferers, in order to prepare an adequate psychological intervention. 30 patients after acute MI hospitalized in the Cardiology Department were included to the study. They were questioned in directed interviews. The modified form of Shalit's Circle was used to infer the model of health activity. Perceived reasons for the heart attack (first in 67% cases) appeared as a manifold ar
