Lip cancer: Reconsidering the at-risk patients with pathological assessment.

OBJECTIVES: This study was aimed to overview the treatment protocols of lip cancer and find out a cutoff point of tumor diameter and depth of invasion (DOI) for the survival parameters. MATERIALS AND METHODS: One hundred and ninety-one patients with lip SCC were studied. RESULTS: The average age of the patients was 62 years. Among 191 patients, 82.7% of the patients were men, 96.4% of them had lower lip cancer, and 84% were staged as early (pT1, pT2 ). Primary tumor excision with neck dissection was applied to 62.3% of the patients. Lymph node metastases rate was found to be 11%, and recurre

Epidemiological aspects of oral and pharyngeal cancers in the Basque Country.

Oral and pharyngeal cancer is an entity constituted by a group of tumours that arise in several heterogeneous anatomical sites, and for this reason it is difficult to establish comparisons. The aim of the study was to describe the characteristics of oropharyngeal cancer in the Basque Autonomous Community (BAC), to learn the incidence rate and to establish comparisons. Data of cases are from the Basque Country Cancer Registry for the period 1986-1994, and the methodology used is descriptive. We included 2548 cases, and the sex ratio was 7.4:1. Diagnosis was made by histology in most cases (99%)

Lip and intraoral tumours: a local perspective.

Lip and intra-oral cancer is an uncommon disease in Singapore among the local population. The incidence is less than 1.5% of all cancers reported to the Singapore Cancer Registry which recorded a total of 18,049 cases of all types of cancer in a 5-year period from 1978 to 1982. The Department of Plastic Surgery at Singapore General Hospital has been conducting a multidisciplinary clinic for the management of head and neck tumours since 1984. The results of the distribution, age, sex and racial differences, risk factors and modalities of treatment of the various types of cancer affecting the li

Burden, Trends and Projection of Lip and Oral Cavity Cancer in Central, Eastern and Western Europe: From the Global Burden of Disease 2023 Study.

BACKGROUND: Lip and oral cavity cancer (LOCC) remains a significant issue in Europe, with an uneven public health burden. While trends have shifted, regional and sex-specific disparities persist due to modifiable risk factors. Using Global Burden of Disease 1990 to 2023 estimates, this study evaluates long-term trends and projects Europe's future LOCC burden. METHODS: The Global Burden of Disease (GBD) Study data of 2023 were examined to evaluate the trends of incidence, prevalence, and mortality of LOCC in Central, Eastern, and Western Europe. We conducted a retrospective analysis of age-sta

Diagnostic tests for oral cancer and potentially malignant disorders in patients presenting with clinically evident lesions.

BACKGROUND: Squamous cell carcinoma is the most common form of malignancy of the oral cavity, and is often proceeded by oral potentially malignant disorders (OPMD). Early detection of oral cavity squamous cell carcinoma (oral cancer) can improve survival rates. The current diagnostic standard of surgical biopsy with histology is painful for patients and involves a delay in order to process the tissue and render a histological diagnosis; other diagnostic tests are available that are less invasive and some are able to provide immediate results. This is an update of a Cochrane Review first publis

Functional lower lip reconstruction with the modified Bernard-Webster flap.

BACKGROUND: Lower lip defects after squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) excisions have been repaired by several surgical techniques. However, the functional reconstruction of full-thickness defects of the lower lip remains a therapeutic challenge. We therefore evaluated functional results of the modified Bernard-Webster flap for the reconstruction of full-thickness lower lip defects after SCC excisions. METHODS: A prospective study was performed on all patients with lower lip full-thickness defects after SCC excisions greater than 1/3 of the lip, reconstructed with the modified Bernard-Webster flap

Lobular capillary hemangioma: the underlying lesion of pyogenic granuloma. A study of 73 cases from the oral and nasal mucous membranes.

Pyogenic granuloma (PG) has a diagnostic, lobular arrangement of capillaries at its base. The lobules consist of discrete clusters of endothelial cells, and the lumina vary from indistinct to prominent. The superficial portions of the lesion may undergo secondary, nonspecific changes including stromal edema, capillary dilation, inflammation, and a granulation tissue reaction. PG has often been equated with these inflammatory changes but objective diagnostic criteria have not been presented. To avoid confusion and focus on the intrinsic nature of PG we suggest the accurate, descriptive term, lo

Clinical and pathological correlation of P53 expression in oral cancers.

In our study, we aimed to evaluate the overexpression of P53 in 155 oral squamous cell carcinomas and to correlate with various clinicopathological features like depth of invasion, lymph nodal involvement, and margin status, which affect the local recurrence and prognosis. This cross-sectional study included 155 oral squamous cell carcinoma patients who underwent surgical resection of primary and nodal disease. The histopathological and clinical features were noted. Immunohistochemical expression was reported, and other clinicopathological features were correlated. Statistical analysis was per

Management of and risk factors for regional recurrence in upper lip squamous cell carcinoma.

Our goal was to evaluate the risk factors for regional recurrence in upper lip squamous cell carcinoma (SCC).A total of 109 patients with upper lip SCC were retrospectively enrolled. Clinical and pathologic information was collected and analyzed.Fifteen (13.8%) patients had a regional metastasis, 2 patients had parotid node metastasis, and no local or distant metastasis was noted. There was neck level I node metastasis in 15 (100%) patients. In multivariate analysis, invasion depth and degree of differentiation were significantly associated with regional metastasis. The 5- and 10-year disease-

Prognostic clinical and histopathological features of canine cutaneous epitheliotropic T-cell lymphoma.

Canine cutaneous epitheliotropic T-cell lymphoma is a neoplasm with heterogeneous clinical and histopathological presentations. Survival times and responses to therapy are variable, and indicators to predict outcomes are lacking. Clinical and histopathological parameters from 176 archival cases from the University of Pennsylvania and University of Bern (2012-2018) were investigated for associations with clinical outcomes. Histopathological evaluation used digitized whole slide images and QuPath software. Cases included 107 female and 69 male dogs from 48 breeds, with a mean age of 10.4 years.

Clinical disease associated with simian agent 8 infection in the baboon.

Simian agent 8 (SA8) is an alphaherpesvirus that was first reported as a spontaneous natural infection in a captive baboon colony in 1988. It was first isolated from an African vervet monkey in 1958 and was classified as a simian agent. Simian agent 8 was later isolated from a baboon rectal swab specimen in 1969 and from an oral lesion in a vervet monkey in 1972. Restriction endonuclease analysis was used to identify the virus as SA8. In a 1-year period, 70 baboons housed in two outside 6-acre breeding corrals developed lesions principally on the genitalia and oral cavity. The incidence was th

Actinic cheilitis: aesthetic and functional comparative evaluation of vermilionectomy using the classic and W-plasty techniques.

BACKGROUND: Chronic actinic cheilitis is actinic keratosis located on the vermilion border. Treatment is essential because of the potential for malignant transformation. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the aesthetic and functional results of vermilionectomy using the classic and W-plasty techniques in actinic cheilitis. In the classic technique, the scar is linear and in the W-plasty one, it is a broken line. METHODS: 32 patients with clinical and histopathological diagnosis of actinic cheilitis were treated. Out of the 32 patients, 15 underwent the W-plasty technique and 17 underwent the classic one

Upper aerodigestive tract metastases in disseminated malignant melanoma.

Cutaneous malignant melanoma sometimes metastasizes to the upper respiratory and digestive tracts. It may cause significant local symptoms such as airway obstruction and dysphagia, and, in some cases, may represent the initial manifestation of disseminated disease. Of the 8,823 patients with cutaneous malignant melanoma seen at The University of Texas-M.D. Anderson Hospital and Tumor Institute at Houston between 1944 and 1983, metastases to this region developed in 54 patients. The most common sites involved were the tonsil, tongue, nasopharynx, larynx, and lip. Five of ten cases in which an a

Reconstruction of a Gunshot-Caused Mouth Floor Defect Using a Nasolabial Flap and a De-Epithelialized V-Y Advancement Flap.

We present reconstruction of a gunshot-caused mouth floor defect using a nasolabial flap and a de-epithelialized V-Y advancement flap.A 58-year-old man presented 14 days after bullet injury passed from anterior chin to the right postauricular area. Upon examination, the central incisors, alveolar bones, and soft tissues of the mouth floor were lost. Bone fragments and failed miniplates were exposed. Pus discharge filled the defect. On the 23rd post-trauma day, right unilateral nasolabial flap was used to cover the oral side of the mouth floor. This flap was centered on the nasolabial fold and i

Atypical Presentation of Mammary Analogue Secretory Carcinoma of the Lip.

Mammary analogue secretory carcinoma (MASC) of the salivary gland is a rare tumor that was first described by Skalova et al in 2010, and since then, only a few hundred cases have been reported in the literature. Prior to Skalova's report, MASC was histologically misclassified as acinic cell carcinoma (ACC), pleomorphic adenoma, mucoepidermoid carcinoma, or adenocarcinoma, not otherwise specified. Mammary analogue secretory carcinoma has a low incidence rate overall, accounting for less than 0.3% of all salivary gland tumors. Histopathologic and cytogenic analysis of MASC is identical to secret
