OBJECTIVES: Although rare in etiology, anterior bony wall defects of the external auditory canal (EAC) accompanied by temporomandibular join … ur patients underwent revision surgery undergoing a more invasive procedure, such as canalplasty or mastoidectomy.
CONCLUSION: Primary repair of the anterior wall defect of the EAC seems to be overpromoted for lasting results but is not as promising as previously noted. We therefore propose to create a novel treatment flowchart regarding the surgical treatment …

OBJECTIVE: To describe rates of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) rhinorrhea after reconstruction of the IAC with calcium phosphate bone cement duri … ients (3.4%) developed postoperative rhinorrhea. Four patients (2.3%) were taken back to the OR for mastoidectomy and repair of CSF leak. Three of these patients were noted to have a CSF leak from the peri-labyrinthine air cells, and one was found to have a leak from the craniotomy site communicating with the mastoid air cells. Two patients were conservatively …

Liposarcoma is a soft tissue neoplasm that commonly develops in the lower extremities and rarely in the head and neck region. Herein, we report the case of a patient with primary liposarcoma that was detected in the mastoid antrum during staged tympanoplasty for cholesteatoma. The tumor adjacent to the attic cholesteatoma was resected completely, and the pathological diagnosis was that of myxoid-type liposarcoma. Because positron emission tomography after the surgery showed no signs of tumor remnants or systemic metastasis, a second-stage surgery was performed 8 months after the first surgery.

A 60-year-old woman presented with pulsatile tinnitus in the left ear. MRI and CT imaging suggested a soft-tissue mass in the middle ear. Exploratory tympanotomy and biopsy confirmed Schneiderian (inverted) papilloma. Endoscopic and radiological assessment showed no evidence of sinonasal lesions. The patient proceeded to mastoid surgery with removal of the ossicles for disease clearance. The small number of cases published to date of isolated middle ear inverted papilloma suggest a high recurrence and malignant transformation rate and aggressive management is therefore warranted.

Tuberculosis involving mastoid and ear is an uncommon entity presenting with myriads of non-specific features and difficult to diagnose, being a paucibacillary condition. The involvement of otomastoid compartment is hypothesised to be of haematogenous origin. Rarely it can spread directly via tympanic membrane perforation or via reflux through eustachian tube. The usual picture of presentation tends to be one of indolent ear infection not responsive to usual antibiotic treatment and symptomatology being out of proportion to examination findings. We present a case of aural tuberculosis presenti

Acute mastoiditis is the most common complication of acute otitis media. Although rare, the disease is carefully studied by otolaryngologist … s (i.e. anticoagulants and/or corticosteroids). Surgical treatments, such as incision of abscesses, mastoidectomy, and neurosurgical procedures, are sometimes performed in combination with medical therapy in very severe complications. Data from our experience are briefly reported.
