Computed tomography and sectional anatomy of the head cavities in donkey (Equus asinus).

The purpose of this study was to describe the computed tomographic (CT) anatomy of normal donkey head cavities to be used as a basis for interpretation of CT images of donkey. Six adult donkeys' heads of undetermined sex were used in this study. The donkey heads were divided into three regions-nasal, orbital, and cranial-to show the morphology of the following cavities: nasal cavity, paranasal sinuses, orbital cavity, oral cavity, pharyngeal cavity, especially the guttural pouch, cranial cavity and temporomandibular joint. The donkey head had six pairs of sinuses: three paranasal (the frontal,

[Retention cysts: a new approach to treatment].

In 2017-2018, the authors examined and operated on 35 patients aged 20 to 39 years (19 women, 16 men) with cystic maxillary sinusitis. The study included patients who were diagnosed with retention cyst of the maxillary sinus, located on the lower walls of the maxillary sinus and dealing with no more than 2/3 of the maxillary sinus volume, according to CT of the paranasal sinuses. The operation was performed using the following method: two punctures of the sinus were performed simultaneously in a typical place in the lower nasal passage - using a Kulikovsky needle and using a 2.8 mm trocar. The…

The sinonasal communication in the horse: examinations using computerized three-dimensional reformatted renderings of computed-tomography datasets.

BACKGROUND: Sinusitis is a common disease in the horse. In human medicine it is described, that obstruction of the sinonasal communication plays a major role in the development of sinusitis. To get spatial sense of the equine specific communication ways between the nasal cavity and the paranasal sinuses, heads of 19 horses, aged 2 to 26 years, were analyzed using three-dimensional (3D) reformatted renderings of CT-datasets. Three-dimensional models were generated following manual and semi-automated segmentation. Before segmentation, the two-dimensional (2D) CT-images were verified against corr

Frontal sinus septectomy for chronic unilateral sinusitis.

Frontal sinus trephination with removal of the intersinus septum has been found to be an effective therapy in selected cases of chronic unilateral frontal sinusitis; in addition, it may be combined with unilateral duct reconstruction in the treatment of chronic bilateral sinusitis. It may also be performed as a prophylactic measure when nasofrontal duct injury occurs during unilateral nasal or maxillary sinus surgery. The authors' experience with the procedure in 20 cases is described.

Modified In-Office Maxillary Balloon Sinus Dilation for Post-Procedure Sinus Monitoring and Access.

Introduction  As experience grows with in-office balloon sinus dilation (BSD) procedures, technique modifications will evolve to meet specific needs. The major disadvantage with the maxillary BSD procedure is that the intact uncinate process prevents visualization of and instrument access into the maxillary sinus both intraoperatively and postoperatively. Combining a partial or complete uncinectomy procedure with maxillary BSD could be beneficial in selected patients with certain maxillary sinus problems. Objective  The primary objective of this study was to see if, in selected patients, combi

Equine nasal and paranasal sinus tumours. Part 1: review of the literature and tumour classification.

The normal gross and histological anatomy of the equine nasal and paranasal sinuses are reviewed and the relationships between the local anatomy, the occurrence of different tumour types, and of tumour spread are examined. The histological classification of the more common equine sinonasal tumours and tumour-like lesions are discussed. Clinical and pathological descriptions of 50 more recently recorded such tumours are separately tabulated. The literature shows that equine sinonasal tumours, both endemic and sporadic, are relatively uncommon in horses, with non-neoplastic growths such as maxil

Maxillary sinus anatomy: a cadaveric study with clinical implications.

This study measured maxillary sinus volume, evaluated the location of the semilunar hiatus in correlation to the nasal floor, and the incidence, location, and height of antral septa and discusses their clinical implications. Maxillary sinus volume was quantified in 65 cadavers (130 sinuses) by water application through the semilunar hiatus and measuring the used amount. The location of the semilunar hiatus was identified as distance from the nasal floor. The septa were counted, evaluated, and the size measured from the antral floor. The medium maxillary sinus volume was 12.5 mL (range, 5-22 mL

Quantification of airflow in the sinuses following functional endoscopic sinus surgery.

BACKGROUND: Despite functional endoscopic sinus surgery (FESS) being the standard of care in medically recalcitrant chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS), its effect on sinus ventilation has not been fully characterized. Airflow simulations can help improve our understanding of how surgical strategies affect post-surgical sinus ventilation. METHODS: Eight postoperative sinonasal cavity models were reconstructed from a wide spectrum of CRS patients who had undergone FESS. Computational fluid dynamics modeling of steady-state, laminar, inspiratory airflow was performed. Ventilation was quantified and ob

Assessing sinus aerosol deposition: benefits of SPECT-CT imaging.

PURPOSE: Aerosol inhalation therapy is one of the methods to treat rhinosinusitis. However the topical drug delivery to the posterior nose and paranasal sinuses shows only limited efficiency. A precise sinusal targeting remains a main challenge for aerosol treatment of sinus disorders. This paper proposes a comparative study of the nasal deposition patterns of micron and submicron particles using planar gamma-scintigraphy imaging vs. a new 3-dimensional (3D) imaging approach based on SPECT-CT measurements. METHODS: Radiolabelled nebulizations have been performed on a plastinated model of huma

The Use of Recombinant Human Platelet-Derived Growth Factor for Maxillary Sinus Augmentation.

The maxillary sinus augmentation procedure has become a predictable treatment to regenerate bone for implant placement. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of recombinant human platelet-derived growth factor BB (rhPDGF-BB) combined with a deproteinized cancellous bovine bone graft for sinus augmentation. The lateral window approach was used for maxillary sinuses with minimal residual bone. After a healing period of 4 months, dental implants were placed and then restored following a 2-month osseointegration period. The result demonstrated increased bone height and ISQ values an

A case of massive maxillary sinus bleeding after dental implant.

In recent years, there has been an increase in the number of dental implants, and many complications may arise during implantation. In cases where an artificial tooth is implanted in the maxilla, complications such as acute maxillary sinusitis, oroantral fistula, and displacement of the dental implant to the maxillary sinus may occur due to the anatomical characteristics of the maxilla and the inexperience of providers. The authors report a case of massive maxillary sinus bleeding during dental implant that was controlled successfully by emergency surgery.
