Isolated traumatic optic nerve avulsion in a boy who suffered a horse kick.

We report a case with traumatic avulsion of optic nerve caused by a horse kick in a child that caused loss of vision. Optic nerve avulsion is a rare injury usually associated with maxillofacial structures. Our patient had no light perception in the left eye. The left pupil was dilated and unreactive to light. The left globe was intact. A non-contrast axial computed tomography scan of the orbit demonstrated a widened and altered nerve globe junction with periorbital soft tissue edema. At six month following the injury, subsequent magnetic resonance imaging of the orbit showed that the preseptal

Issues of critical airway management (Which anesthesia; which surgical airway?).

Which anesthesia for patients with critical airway? Safe and effective analgesia and anesthesia in critical airway is a skilled task especially after severe maxillofacial injury combined with head injury and hemorrhagic shock. If on one side sedation is wanted, on the other hand it may worsen the airway and hemodynamic situation to a point where hypoventilation and decrease of blood pressure, common side-effect of many opioids, may prejudice the patient's level of consciousness and hemodynamic compensation, compounding an already critical situation. What to do when endotracheal intubation fail

[Retrospective analysis of facial fractures related to falls in 260 Japanese patients].

OBJECTIVE: Numerous epidemiological studies concerning fall-related injuries have been performed in the geriatric and orthopedic field to clarify the relation between the type of fall and fracture patterns. Although falls are a common cause of facial fractures, there is no study describing these relations. This study thus investigates the relationship between the type of fall and fracture pattern. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We analyzed 260 patients with fall-related facial fractures treated between 1995 and 2000 at the First Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Osaka University Dental Ho

Pattern of mandibular fractures and helmet use among motorcycle crash victims in Tanzania.

BACKGROUND: The maxillofacial structures are commonly affected in motorcycle crashes, with the mandible being one of the most frequently fractured bones. Helmets have been shown to have a protective effect in preventing maxillofacial injuries, however, its effect on the occurrence of mandibular fractures is not very well established. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the pattern of mandibular fractures among motorcycle crash victims in Tanzania, and determine the role of helmets in occurrence of mandibular fractures among the motorcyclists. METHODOLOGY: This was a 6-months prospective, cross-sectional…

Surgical management of unilateral body fractures of the edentulous atrophic mandible.

INTRODUCTION: Management of body fractures in patients with edentulous atrophic mandibles represents a challenging task due to patient's age, medical comorbidities, poor bone quality, and vascularity, as well as reduced contact area between the fracture ends. The aim of the study was to assess the demographic and clinical variables, the surgical technique, and outcomes of unilateral body fractures of the edentulous atrophic mandible managed at several European departments of oral and maxillofacial surgery. METHODS: This study is based on a systematic computer-assisted database that allowed th

Prevalence of mandibular fracture in patients visiting a tertiary dental care hospital in North India.

BACKGROUND: Injuries of the maxillofacial complex represent one of the most important health problems worldwide. At present, in developing India, due to poor traffic sense, maxillofacial trauma and fractures are most epidemiologic diseases. Mandible is the largest and strongest facial bone and it is the second most commonly fractured bone. Mandibular fractures can involve only one site or can often involve multiple anatomic sites simultaneously. AIMS: The present study is aimed to know the age- and sex-related prevalence of parasymphyseal fracture, fracture of angle, condylar fracture, symphy

Microbiologic and antibiotic aspects of infections in the oral and maxillofacial region.

An overview of infection as it applies to the oral and maxillofacial region has been provided. The following conclusions are drawn: odontoge … t well defined; recommendations were made only in certain instances. However, in severe penetrating maxillofacial injuries with devitalized tissue, recommendations for antibiotics were for broad and prolonged coverage. In this instance, use of antibiotics is considered therapeutic and not prophylactic. In each instance, we tried to validate the selection. Our rationale …

Electric scooter-related traumatic brain injuries: a scoping review of injury patterns, risk factors, management, and clinical outcomes.

OBJECTIVE: Electric scooters (e-scooters) have rapidly gained popularity in urban environments worldwide. While promoted as sustainable and convenient, their widespread adoption has led to a rise in injury rates, particularly traumatic brain injuries (TBIs). Despite increasing recognition of e-scooter-related head trauma, the literature remains fragmented and lacks focused synthesis. METHODS: A comprehensive search of PubMed, Embase, Scopus, Web of Science, and Cochrane databases was conducted in March 2025. Studies were included if they reported on e-scooter-related TBIs in real-world settin

Immediate Rehabilitation of Critical-Size Gunshot- and Mine Blast-Related Maxillary Defects Using Cortically Anchored Single-Piece Implants: Two Case Reports.

Background and Clinical Significance: Implant rehabilitation of patients with acquired maxillofacial defects remains challenging, particularly following high-energy war-related trauma. Gunshot and mine blast injuries frequently result in extensive hard and soft tissue loss, often requiring complex reconstructive procedures. Although cortically anchored implants have been successfully used in patients with severe maxillary atrophy and selected traumatic defects, evidence supporting their use for the immediate rehabilitation of critical-size war-related maxillary defects remains limited. Cortica

Blunt maxillary fracture and cheek bite: two rare causes of traumatic pneumomediastinum.

Subcutaneous facial emphysema is a well-known consequence of oral and maxillofacial traumatic injury. In some rare cases, the subcutaneous air collection could spread through the retropharyngeal and paralatero-cervical spaces, reaching the mediastinum. This clinical entity is known as pneumomediastinum and represents a severe and, sometimes, life-threatening condition. Other reported causes of pneumomediastinum are esophageal and tracheal traumatic or iatrogenic rupture. Finally, the so-called spontaneous pneumomediastinum is caused by a sudden increase in alveolar pressure and is usually seen

Artificial intelligence-based predictive hemodynamic monitoring in conjunction with goal-directed therapy reduces duration, frequency, and severity of intraoperative hypotension in major maxillofacial and otolaryngological surgery-a prospective randomized controlled pilot trial.

BACKGROUND: Intraoperative hypotension (IOH) during non-cardiac surgery is associated with increased risk of postoperative complications, including acute kidney injury, myocardial injury, stroke, and mortality. Artificial intelligence-based predictive hemodynamic monitoring using the Hypotension Prediction Index (HPI), combined with goal-directed therapy (GDT), has been proposed to reduce IOH. However, its effectiveness in major maxillofacial and otolaryngologic surgery remains unclear. The purpose of the study was to assess whether HPI-guided management or classical GDT reduces IOH compared t

Endoscopic repair of isolated anterior table frontal sinus fractures without fixation.

Frontal sinus fractures constitute 5% to 15% of maxillofacial fractures, and isolated anterior table injuries account for 33% of frontal sinus fractures. The treatment strategy of frontal sinus fractures should be individualized according to the extent of the injury. Endoscope-assisted repair without any fixation method for the treatment of mildly and moderately displaced (1-5 mm) and closed isolated anterior table frontal sinus fractures is a good alternative technique for treatment.Between April 2010 and December 2011, 5 patients with mildly and moderately displaced isolated anterior table f
