Cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) is increasingly recognized as essential for improving neural and cognitive function, especially in older age. Here, we examined a cross-sectional sample of the Human Connectome Project (HCP) Aging dataset (ages 36-100; N = 378) to test the hypothesis that functional connectivity profiles that are related to CRF are also associated with episodic memory and executive function across middle age and older adults. To test these hypotheses, we first used connectome-based predictive modeling (CPM) to identify functional connections (FCs) that were separately predictive

BACKGROUND: Masticatory parameters, such as reduced number of teeth and posterior contacts, have been shown to be associated with reduced cognitive status. The underlying mechanisms that affect these associations, are however, not well understood.
OBJECTIVES: The study aims to investigate the association between masticatory dysfunction and cognition and explore the mediating effect of brain structure.
METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, 45 older adults with subjective masticatory dysfunction (mean age 72.3 ± 4.0 years) were included. Mini-Mental State Examination score <25, brain trauma,

OBJECTIVE: The inter-individual variability in cognitive changes may be early indicators of major health events. We aimed to determine whether late-life cognitive trajectories were associated with incident dementia, persistent physical disability and all-cause mortality.
METHODS: Data came from a cohort of older community-dwelling individuals aged 70 years or above in Australia and the United States. Global cognition, verbal fluency, episodic memory and psychomotor speed were assessed regularly at up to seven waves between 2010 and 2017. Dementia, disability in activities of daily living, and

BACKGROUND: Impairments in component processes of working and episodic memory mark both HIV infection and chronic alcoholism, with compounded deficits often observed in individuals comorbid for these conditions. Remote semantic memory processes, however, have only seldom been studied in these diagnostic groups. Examination of remote semantic memory could provide insight into the underlying processes associated with storage and retrieval of learned information over extended time periods while elucidating spared and impaired cognitive functions in these clinical groups.
METHODS: We examined com

Many people with bipolar disorder (BD) experience persistent cognitive deficits. Sleep spindles have been linked to cognitive ability in healthy populations and psychotic disorders. While there is preliminary evidence for altered spindle activity in BD, research directly examining the association between sleep spindle parameters and cognitive performance in this population is lacking. Therefore, our primary objective was to examine the association between fast spindle density and episodic memory performance in euthymic individuals with BD. As exploratory analyses, we looked at associations bet

The temporal component of episodic memory has been recognized as a sensitive behavioral marker in early stage of Alzheimer's disease (AD) patients. However, parallel studies in AD animals are currently lacking, and the underlying neural circuit mechanisms remain poorly understood. Using a novel AppNL-G-F knock-in (APP-KI) rat model, the developmental changes of temporal order memory (TOM) and the relationship with medial prefrontal cortex and perirhinal cortex (mPFC-PRH) circuit were determined through in vivo electrophysiology and microimaging technique. We observed a deficit in TOM performan

OBJECTIVE: HIV-associated neurocognitive disorders (HAND) are associated with deficits in prospective memory (PM). However, most PM research in HIV has used single-event tasks as opposed to habitual PM paradigms, which may be more relevant to clinical populations for whom many health-care behaviors must be performed both frequently and routinely.
METHOD: For the current study, we examined habitual PM and its associations with real-world functioning outcomes in 36 HIV+ individuals with HAND (HAND+), 70 HIV+ individuals without HAND (HAND-), and 115 HIV- individuals. The ongoing task consisted

The left angular gyrus (AG) is thought to play a critical role in episodic retrieval and has been implicated in the recollection of specific details of prior episodes. Motivated by recent fMRI studies in which it was reported that elevated neural activity in left AG during study is predictive of subsequent associative memory, the present study investigated whether the region plays a causal role in associative memory encoding. Participants underwent online transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) while encoding word pairs prior to an associative memory test. We predicted that TMS to left AG duri

Episodic memory involves reconstruction of past events through integration of multiple types of information, including perceptual details, narrative content, and emotional tone. The default mode network (DMN) is a set of regions thought to support episodic retrieval, yet it remains unclear how distinct subnetworks contribute to recall of these different memory features. Here, we examined how DMN subnetworks support and represent memory for naturalistic emotional events. Male and female human participants encoded short news videos that varied in emotional valence and recalled them in response t

In mammals respiratory-locked hippocampal rhythms are implicated in the scaffolding and transfer of information between sensory and memory networks. These oscillations are entrained by nasal respiration and driven by the olfactory bulb. They then travel to the piriform cortex where they propagate further downstream to the hippocampus and modulate neural processes critical for memory formation. In humans, bypassing nasal airflow through mouth-breathing abolishes these rhythms and impacts encoding as well as recognition processes thereby reducing memory performance. It has been hypothesized that

Autobiographical amnesia assessments in depression need to account for normal changes in consistency over time, contribution of mood and type of memories measured. We report herein validation studies of the Columbia Autobiographical Memory Interview - Short Form (CAMI-SF), exclusively used in depressed patients receiving electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) but without previous published report of normative data. The CAMI-SF was administered twice with a 6-month interval to 44 healthy volunteers to obtain normative data for retrieval consistency of its Semantic, Episodic-Extended and Episodic-Speci

HIV's effects on episodic memory have not been compared systematically between male and female substance-dependent individuals. We administered the Brief Visuospatial Memory Test-Revised (BVMT-R) to 280 substance-dependent HIV+ and HIV- men and women. Groups were comparable on demographic, substance use, and comorbid characteristics. There were no significant main effects of sex or HIV serostatus on BVMT-R performance, but HIV+ women performed significantly more poorly on delayed recall. This effect was most prominent among cocaine-dependent HIV+ women. Our findings are consistent with recent

This article reviews 147 cases of amnesia following damage including the hippocampus or fornix as reported in 179 publications. The aetiology, mnestic abilities and reference(s) are tabulated for each case. Consistent findings across cases include the association of bilateral hippocampal damage with a deficit in anterograde episodic memory combined with spared procedural and working memory. The limited nature of retrograde amnesia following lesions to the fornix is also noted. Less consistent and thus more controversial findings, include effects of lesion size or laterality, deficits in semant

Frontotemporal dementia (FTD) is a heterogeneous group of neurodegenerative brain disorders, primarily affecting the frontal and/or temporal lobes. Three main subtypes are recognised, each with distinct clinical and cognitive profiles: behavioural-variant FTD (bvFTD), semantic dementia (SD), and progressive nonfluent aphasia (PNFA). Subtype-specific cerebellar grey matter atrophy has been associated with cognitive dysfunction in FTD; however, the extent and severity of structural abnormalities in the cerebro-cerebellar circuits in these disorders has not been investigated. This study aimed to

The precise and fleeting moment of rich recollection triggered by an environmental cue is difficult to reproduce in the lab. However, epilepsy patients can experience sudden reminiscences after intracranial electrical brain stimulation (EBS). In these cases, the transient brain state related to the activation of the engram and its conscious perception can be recorded using intracerebral EEG (iEEG). We collected various EBS-induced reminiscences for iEEG analysis, classifying them as follows: no or weak details (familiarity); moderate details and context (semantic and personal semantic memories

In forensic contexts, measuring witness suggestibility is a key issue; however, existing tools typically assess suggestibility vulnerability regarding spoken narrative memory. The main aim of this study is to measure immediate and delayed suggestibility concerning episodic memory-elicited via audiovisual stimuli-using a novel tool: the Suggestive Eyewitness Memory Interview (SEMI). A total of 144 adult participants were administered both the SEMI and the Gudjonsson Suggestibility Scale 2 (GSS2). The SEMI demonstrated satisfactory fit indices and convergent validity with the GSS2. A comparison

Initial neuropathology of early Alzheimer's disease accumulates in the transentorhinal cortex. We review empirical data suggesting that tasks assessing cognitive functions supported by the transenthorinal cortex are impaired as early as the preclinical stages of Alzheimer's disease. These tasks span across various domains, including episodic memory, semantic memory, language, and perception. We propose that all tasks sensitive to Alzheimer-related transentorhinal neuropathology commonly rely on representations of entities supporting the processing and discrimination of items having perceptuall

A patient had transient memory loss for close family members. She could not even recognise their names as familiar. Her everyday memory was relatively preserved and she retained a clear recollection of the episode. Standard and sleep deprived EEG showed a mild abnormality of the left temporal lobe. Neuropsychological testing found evidence for a mild verbal memory impairment. The findings provide further evidence for the fractionation of transient forms of amnesia, support the dissociation of semantic/retrograde amnesia from episodic/anterograde amnesia, and offer evidence in favour of a left

Alpha-amino-3-hydroxy-5-methyl-4-isoxazole-propionic acid (AMPA) type glutamate receptors are critical for synaptic plasticity and induction of long-term potentiation (LTP), considered as one of the synaptic mechanisms underlying learning and memory. Positive allosteric modulators of AMPA receptors could provide a therapeutic approach to the treatment of cognitive disorders resulting from aging and/or neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer disease (AD). Several AMPA potentiators have been described in the last decade, but for the moment their clinical efficacy has not been demonstrated
