Individuals with Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASDs) show reduced subicular volume, and preclinical studies complement this by demonstrating that third-trimester-equivalent ethanol exposure induces apoptosis in corticolimbic regions, including the subiculum. The subiculum mediates hippocampal-cortical communication critical for long-term memory consolidation. Within the distal dorsal subiculum, a population of bursting neurons uniquely expresses VGLUT2 and plays a key role in memory processing. We hypothesized that third-trimester-equivalent ethanol exposure would reduce neuronal and VGLU

Working memory (WM) flexibly prioritizes task-relevant information over short intervals, serving as a critical gateway to long-term memory (LTM). However, how this dynamic prioritization influences what is ultimately retained in LTM remains unclear. Here, we investigated the long-term consequences of internally guided prioritization shifts within WM. Human participants (N = 20) encoded two items (a face and a scene) associated with short (1 s) and long (4 s) delays, where the face was probed after 1 s or not at all, and the scene was probed after 4 s only if the face was not tested. Using mult

Relations between memory and the self are framed from a number of perspectives-developmental aspects, forms of memory, interrelations between memory and the brain, and interactions between the environment and memory. The self is seen as dividable into more rudimentary and more advanced aspects. Special emphasis is laid on memory systems and within them on episodic autobiographical memory which is seen as a pure human form of memory that is dependent on a proper ontogenetic development and shaped by the social environment, including culture. Self and episodic autobiographical memory are seen as

IMPORTANCE: Previous evidence suggests a bidirectional association between physical activity and cognitive function. It remains unclear whether long-term cognitive trajectories are associated with later differences in how older adults allocate time during the day between physical activity, sedentary behavior, and sleep.
OBJECTIVE: To assess whether long-term cognitive trajectories are associated with the subsequent amount of daily time in physical activity, sedentary behavior, and sleep.
DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This cohort study included community-dwelling adults aged 50 years or

The goals of this project were threefold: to determine the nature of the memory deficit in children/adolescents with dyslexia, to utilize clinical memory measures in this endeavor, and to determine the extent to which semantic short-term memory (STM) is related to basic reading performance. Two studies were conducted using different samples, one incorporating the Wide Range Assessment of Memory and Learning and the other incorporating the California Verbal Learning Test-Children's Version. Results suggest that phonological STM is deficient in children with dyslexia, but semantic STM and visual

Global populations are increasingly consuming diets high in saturated fats and refined carbohydrates, and such diets have been well-associated with heightened inflammation and neurological dysfunction. Notably, older individuals are particularly vulnerable to the impact of unhealthy diet on cognition, even after a single meal, and pre-clinical rodent studies have demonstrated that short-term consumption of high-fat diet (HFD) induces marked increases in neuroinflammation and cognitive impairment. Unfortunately though, to date, most studies on the topic of nutrition and cognition, especially in

INTRODUCTION: Due to risk and response-adapted treatment strategies, more than 80% of newly diagnosed adult classical Hodgkin lymphoma (HL) patients at any stage can be cured and become long-term survivors. A well-known side effect is cognitive dysfunction that appears in HL patients after chemotherapy (chemobrain). In the present longitudinal study, we measured cognitive function in our HL patients, in search of potential correlations between patient-related factors, the signs and symptoms of their diseases, and therapeutic factors.
METHODS: Patients underwent a computer-assisted assessment

Achieving long-term protection following vaccination is crucial to ensuring that high levels of immunity are maintained within a population while eliminating the need to introduce booster vaccinations. Based on an analysis of the hepatitis B virus vaccine, several factors have been shown to contribute to long-term protection, namely: specific lymphoproliferation, the in vivo humoral response, and immune memory. To ensure protection against persistent human papillomavirus (HPV) infection and the subsequent development of cervical lesions, an effective HPV vaccine must be able to induce strong h

INTRODUCTION: Anti-CD20 therapy is an effective steroid-sparing option for pediatric idiopathic nephrotic syndrome (INS), but long-term data on immune reconstitution are limited.
METHODS: Thirteen pediatric INS patients (7 males) were longitudinally evaluated at baseline, first long-term follow-up (mean 5.4 years), and extended follow-up (mean 6.6 years after the first follow-up, >3 years from the last anti-CD20 infusion). Clinical outcomes, B-cell subsets, serum immunoglobulin levels, vaccine competence, and infection rates were analyzed.
RESULTS: At the first follow-up, most patients had r

Chronic cerebral hypoperfusion (CCH) is a common mechanism of acute brain injury due to impairment of blood flow to the brain. Moreover, a prolonged lack of oxygen supply may result in cerebral infarction or global ischemia, which subsequently causes long-term memory impairment. Research on using Clitoria ternatea root extract for treating long-term memory has been studied extensively. However, the bioactive compound contributing to its neuroprotective effects remains uncertain. In the present study, we investigate the effects of clitorienolactone A (CLA) and B (CLB) from the roots of Clitoria

Our ability to recognize that something is familiar, often referred to as visual recognition memory, has been correlated with a reduction in neural activity in the perirhinal cortex. In this issue of Neuron, Griffiths et al. now provide evidence that this form of memory requires AMPA receptor endocytosis and long-term depression of excitatory synapses in this brain area.

The question of apparent discrepancies in short-term memory capacity for sign language and speech has long presented difficulties for the models of verbal working memory. While short-term memory (STM) capacity for spoken language spans up to 7 ± 2 items, the verbal working memory capacity for sign languages appears to be lower at 5 ± 2. The assumption that both auditory and visual communication (sign language) rely on the same memory buffers led to the claims of impairment of STM buffers in sign language users. Yet, no common model deals with both the sensory and linguistic nature of spoken an

A cross-sectional neuropsychological study of cognitive functions in 20 male patients with genetically proven spinal and bulbar muscular atrophy (SBMA) was performed, with a comparison of their cognitive performance with that of 20 age- and education-matched control subjects. Neuropsychological assessment covered executive functioning, memory, and attentional control. The SBMA patients revealed deficits in verbal and non-verbal fluency as well as concept formation. Additionally, they showed significant memory deficits in all of the investigated domains of working memory, short-term and long-te

Cognitive disorders in children have traditionally been described in terms of clinical phenotypes or syndromes, chromosomal lesions, metabolic disorders, or neuropathology. Relatively little is known about how these disorders affect the chemical reactions involved in learning and memory. Experiments in fruit flies, snails, and mice have revealed some highly conserved pathways that are involved in learning, memory, and synaptic plasticity, which is the primary substrate for memory storage. These can be divided into short-term memory storage through local changes in synapses, and long-term stora

BACKGROUND: The high variability in the pharmacokinetics of tigecycline may impact therapeutic efficacy, particularly in critically ill patients. This study introduces machine learning (ML) methods, aiming to clarify their effectiveness in individualized drug exposure prediction and determine the optimal modeling strategy.
METHODS: The least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) method was used to screen the covariates. Four ML models, random forest, extreme gradient boosting, multilayer perceptron, and long short-term memory network (LSTM), were trained and tested using 751 conce

BACKGROUND: The annual incidence of acute pancreatitis is approximately 30 per 100,000, with 20% progressing to severe acute pancreatitis and a mortality rate of 20%-40%. Traditional scoring models suffer from data lag or insufficient accuracy, while existing machine learning models mostly overlook the dynamic characteristics of vital signs. METHODS: Vital signs , laboratory and imaging indices within 24 hours of admission were collected. First, a bidirectional long short-term memory network model was constructed using time-series data . Then, key indices from laboratory and imaging data were s

Ramadan fasting substantially alters meal timing, sleep patterns, and daily activity, thereby increasing the risk of hypoglycaemia in adults with type 1 diabetes (T1D). Although continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) systems provide real-time alerts, these are largely reactive or limited to short prediction horizons, offering insufficient warning under fasting-related behavioural and circadian disruption. This study aims to evaluate whether behaviour-aware, temporally enriched recurrent deep learning models, leveraging multimodal CGM and wearable-derived signals, can forecast hypoglycaemia one ho

Asthma is an inflammatory disorder with significant health problems. It generally affects the lungs but can also impact brain performance via several mechanisms. Some investigations have proposed that asthma impairs cognition. This study assessed the impacts of myrtenol as a monoterpene on cognitive disorders following asthma at behavioral, molecular, and synaptic levels. Asthma was induced by injection and inhalation of ovalbumin (OVA). Male Wistar rats were allocated to five groups: control, asthma, asthma/vehicle, asthma/myrtenol, and asthma/budesonide. Myrtenol (8 mg/kg) or budesonide (160

BACKGROUND: Clinical evidence indicates that patients affected by Alzheimer's Disease (AD) fail to form new memories although their memories for old events are intact. This amnesic pattern depends on the selective vulnerability to AD-neurodegeneration of the hippocampus, the brain region that sustains the formation of new memories, while cortical regions that store remote memories are spared.
OBJECTIVE: To identify the cellular mechanisms underlying impaired recent memories and intact remote memories in a mouse model of AD.
METHODS: Glutamatergic synaptic currents were recorded by patch-clam
