Dysfunctional activation of subcortical nuclei in palatal myoclonus detected by high-resolution MRI.

Magnetic resonance images that were sensitized to changes in cerebral blood oxygenation state demonstrated dysfunctional activation of the dentate nuclei, the left inferior olivary nucleus and the left red nucleus in a 56-year-old patient with palatal myoclonus. These findings represent the first demonstration of movement-related activation of cerebellar, brainstem and midbrain nuclei in a single subject and at a spatial resolution comparable to that of anatomic MR images.

Hypothalamic-midbrain dysregulation syndrome: hypertension, hyperthermia, hyperventilation, and decerebration.

Certain decerebrate lesions of brain stem or hypothalamus induce pharmacologically reversible hypertension and hyperthermia in animals. We observed three young patients with episodic decerebration, hyperthermia, hypertension, and hyperventilation during recovery from comas of different etiologies. The shared pathology on neurologic examinations and computed tomographic scans was hypothalamic-mesencephalic dysfunction, suggesting a diencephalic-brain-stem disconnection syndrome or brain-stem release mechanism. Propranolol was the most effective drug tested, but only two patients responded, one

Midbrain vs. pontine medial longitudinal fasciculus lesions: the utilization of masseter and blink reflexes.

Masseter (MR) and blink reflexes (BL) were investigated in 51 patients with internuclear ophthalmoplegia (INO) due to multiple sclerosis (28) and lacunar infarction (23). The MR was abnormal in 20 of 23 cases with bilateral INO and in 21 of 28 with unilateral INO. The R1 component of the BL (BL-R1) was abnormal in 7 of 23 patients with bilateral INO and 10 of 28 with unilateral INO. Combined MR and BL-R1 changes occurred in 8 of 28 cases with unilateral INO and 7 of 23 with bilateral INO. The findings provide evidence for a rostral/caudal localization of lesions within the medial longitudinal

[Dementia and disturbance of consciousness in thalamic degeneration].

A 53-year-old male with thalamic degeneration is presented. He had double vision, cerebellar signs, and pyramidal and extrapyramidal tracts signs in addition to hypersomnia, decrease in spontaneity and attention, and impairment of memory as psychic symptoms. These signs and symptoms were progressive, and he subsequently developed akinetic mutism and died of pneumonia 17 months after the onset of the disease. His clinical diagnosis was considered as Gerstmann-Sträussler syndrome due to progressive dementia, cerebellar signs and the other signs mentioned above. The postmortem pathological invest

Partial dorsal mesencephalic hemorrhages: report of three cases.

We studied three patients with spontaneous dorsal mesencephalic hemorrhages. One patient had Parinaud's syndrome with a unilateral hemorrhage confined to the rostral tectal plate. The second patient had vertical gaze palsy, skew deviation, and bilateral Horner's syndrome due to a unilateral hemorrhage that involved the superior colliculus and extended anteriorly into the midbrain tegmentum and inferiorly to the rostral dorsal pons. The third patient had a hemorrhage in the caudal tectal plate, with bilateral fourth cranial nerve palsies, unilateral Horner's syndrome, and ataxia. There was hydr

Joint and separate effects of estrogen and progesterone on responses of midbrain neurons to lordosis-controlling somatic stimuli in the female golden Syrian hamster.

Single midbrain neurons were examined for effects of ovarian hormone administration on responsiveness to an array of lordosis-controlling types of somatosensory stimuli in anesthetized, ovariectomized Syrian hamsters. Neuronal responses were recorded under four different hormonal treatment conditions: 1) estradiol benzoate (EB) followed by progesterone (P), 2) EB alone, 3) P alone, or 4) no hormone administration. Only the hamsters receiving both EB and P showed lordosis in a mating test immediately prior to preparation for recording. The joint administration of EB and P strongly facilitated u

Effects of tegmental lesions on the isolation call of squirrel monkeys.

The present study is concerned with identifying brain mechanisms underlying a basic mammalian vocalization known as the isolation call. The call serves to reestablish contact of separated individuals. Adult squirrel monkeys were used as experimental subjects because the isolation call in these animals has been shown to be stable, well-defined, and readily elicited under experimental conditions. Bilateral, symmetrical electrocoagulations in certain parts of the tegmentum and core gray matter of the thalamus and midbrain variously altered the character and production of isolation calls, but had

[Arterio-veinous malformations located within the occipito-cerebello-mesencephalic dihedral (author's transl)].

About 4 cases of arterio-veinous malformations located within the occipito-cerebello-mesencephalic dihedral (which is this region of the brain including the cistern of Galen and the surrounding formations : the quadrigeminal bodies forwards, the splenium of the corpus callosum upwards, the upper face of the cerebellum and the pedonculus cerebellaris superior below) the authors related their own experience. These 4 cases are detailed from a clinical point of view. Them, a synthetic study is undertaken in which a comparison is done between the literature and the clinical features encountered : h

The reticulovestibular projection in the cat. An experimental study with silver impregnation methods.

The distribution of degeneration in the vestibular nuclei (VN) has been studied in transversely cut sections from 9 cats with stereotaxically performed lesions in the main reticular formation (RF) of the brain stem (Nauta of Fink and Heimer method). No projection was found from the mesencephalic reticular formation (R.mes.) and nucleus reticularis ventralis (R.v.). However, the reticular nuclei gigantocellularis (R.gc.), parvocellularis (R.p.c.) and pontis oralis (R.p.o.) were found to project bilaterally onto the 4 main vestibular nuclei with an ipsilateral overweight. By far the greates cont

Lesions were absent in the thalamus, mesencephalon, and brainstem. Lesions were typified by areas of parenchymal loss, perivascular foamy macrophage accumulation, and extensive gliosis dominated by gemistocytic astrocytes. In all affected animals, vessels located in the center of the lesions had inc …

Periconceptional maternal folate status and the impact on embryonic head and brain structures: the Rotterdam Periconceptional Cohort.

RESEARCH QUESTION: Does periconceptional maternal folate status influence the size of human embryonic head and brain structures? DESIGN: The study population was selected from the Rotterdam Periconceptional Cohort conducted at the Erasmus MC. Three-dimensional (3D) ultrasound scans were performed at 9 and 11 weeks of gestational age. Using 3D ultrasound datasets, head volume, head circumference, diencephalon (DTD), mesencephalon (MTD) and left/right telencephalon (TTL/TTR) measurements were performed offline using a virtual reality technique and specialized 3D software. Maternal venous blood …
